TAP Air Portugal later confirmed that attackers accessed and publicly disclosed some customers’ personal data after an August 2022 intrusion. The ransomware group Ragnar Locker claimed responsibility and asserted a much larger scale, but TAP did not confirm the group’s claimed volume or a total number of affected customers.
What happened in the TAP Air Portugal hack?
TAP said its cybersecurity systems detected unauthorized access to some of its IT systems in August 2022. The airline said it had been working with Portugal’s Polícia Judiciária and Centro Nacional de Cibersegurança since 25 August, with Microsoft forensic experts supporting its response. TAP’s customer notice later described the incident and its impact.
On 31 August, Ragnar Locker claimed responsibility. BleepingComputer reported that the group posted a screenshot that appeared to show a spreadsheet containing customer fields, and that the group alleged hundreds of gigabytes may have been compromised. Those were the gang’s claims and contemporaneous reporting—not an independently verified inventory of stolen files. BleepingComputer’s report covered the claim.
TAP’s position changed as its investigation progressed. Its initial public statement in late August said it had found no facts indicating improper access to customer data. On 21 September 2022, the airline’s customer notice confirmed that attackers had accessed and disclosed some customer personal data. TAP said it had contained the intrusion and that operations continued normally, without impact to operational processes.

What customer information did TAP say was disclosed?
TAP said the data exposed varied by customer. The airline listed:
- Name, nationality, sex, and date of birth
- Address, email address, and telephone contact
- Customer registration date and frequent-flyer number
TAP said it had no indication that payment data were exfiltrated. It also said that passwords for Miles&Go or the customer area were not among the compromised personal data. These are the airline’s statements, not independently audited findings.

How many customers were affected?
No confirmed customer total was reported in the contemporaneous coverage cited here. TAP’s chief executive, Christine Ourmières-Widener, declined to give a number; Reuters reported that she said local estimates of roughly 1.5 million did not necessarily correspond to facts. Reuters’ 21 September 2022 report covered her comments.
ENISA’s September 2022 brief likewise described approximately 1.5 million as the attackers’ claim, not a verified count of affected customers. ENISA’s 2022 threat landscape report provides that attribution. Treat the figure as an allegation, not as the number of confirmed victims.

What should TAP customers do?
TAP warned that disclosed personal information could be used in phishing or other fraud attempts, including attempts to obtain additional details that might help compromise digital systems. Its practical advice was to:
- Be wary of unsolicited requests for personal information, even if a message refers to the breach.
- Avoid suspicious email links and attachments.
- Review the security of your TAP account password.
TAP said it would not contact customers individually about the incident after its public announcement. Treat a message claiming to be a personal incident follow-up with caution and verify any request through TAP’s official channels. The notice does not establish that every customer was affected, or that payment details or account passwords were exposed.

What is still unverified?
The sources cited here do not establish a final public finding by Portuguese police or a data-protection regulator, a final number of affected customers, or independent verification of Ragnar Locker’s claimed data volume. The group’s claims should therefore remain distinct from what TAP subsequently confirmed: unauthorized access to and public disclosure of some customer personal data.
