1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuy a Mac mini if its memory, display support and ports cover your work; choose a Mac Studio when you can point to a need for more memory, more displays, faster pro connectivity or the M5 Max or M5 Ultra chips. The current lineup spans four U.S. starting prices, from $899 to $5,499. A Studio is not automatically the better choice: if a mini configuration meets your actual workload, it is the more sensible buy.

Choose by the work your Mac must do
Choose Mac mini for everyday work and capable compact setups
The M6 mini is the entry point if 16GB to 32GB of memory, up to three external displays and its available connections are sufficient. It is the lower-cost choice for general desktop use and workflows that do not need the higher memory ceilings or Studio-only connection options.

The M5 Pro mini is the middle ground when the M6’s limits are too tight but you do not need a Studio. It starts with 24GB of memory and can be configured to 64GB, with up to three external displays. Its listed storage starts at 512GB, rather than the M6 mini’s 256GB.
Choose Mac Studio when a specific ceiling matters
The M5 Max Studio is relevant if your work needs more than 64GB of memory, up to five external displays, or its pro-oriented connectivity. The M5 Ultra raises the listed memory ceiling to 512GB and supports up to eight external displays. These capabilities matter when a large project, local AI model or multi-display workspace exceeds what a mini configuration can accommodate; they are not reasons by themselves to pay more. This is guidance from Apple’s published configuration limits, not a claim about benchmark results.

Memory and storage: decide what must fit inside the Mac
| Model | Unified memory options | Memory bandwidth listed by Apple | SSD capacity options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini M6 | Starts at 16GB; up to 32GB | Up to 170GB/s | 256GB starting capacity; up to 2TB |
| Mac mini M5 Pro | Starts at 24GB; up to 64GB | Up to 307GB/s | 512GB starting capacity; up to 8TB |
| Mac Studio M5 Max | Starts at 36GB; up to 128GB | Up to 460GB/s | 512GB starting capacity; up to 8TB |
| Mac Studio M5 Ultra | Starts at 96GB; up to 256GB or 512GB | Up to 1.2TB/s | 1TB starting capacity; up to 16TB |
Unified memory is shared by the system and chip, so the practical question is whether your working set fits—not just how many applications you open. Large projects and local AI models can benefit from more capacity. If the model or project you need exceeds a mini’s maximum, the Studio becomes materially relevant; otherwise, paying for unused capacity does not make sense.
Treat the listed memory and internal storage as configuration choices made when buying, not parts to upgrade later. If your files do not need to reside on the internal SSD, external storage can be part of the setup, but check that its connection and speed suit your workflow.

Displays: count them and verify the connection mix
| Model | Maximum external displays listed |
|---|---|
| Mac mini M6 | Up to 3 |
| Mac mini M5 Pro | Up to 3 |
| Mac Studio M5 Max | Up to 5 |
| Mac Studio M5 Ultra | Up to 8 |
The maximum count is not a guarantee that every group of displays will run at your preferred resolution and refresh rate. Those limits vary with the chip and the combination of Thunderbolt and HDMI connections. Check Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications or Mac Studio technical specifications for the exact display mix before ordering; the support pages provide the model-specific combinations.
Ports, networking and desk setup
Mac Studio connections
Studio has four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a front SDXC slot. Its front ports depend on the chip: M5 Max has two USB-C ports rated up to 10Gb/s, while M5 Ultra has two Thunderbolt 5 ports. Apple also lists Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

- A POWERFUL PLATFORM FOR AI — Apple silicon, and every major component that powers it, is designed to run demanding AI workflows like running huge LLMs, directly on device.
Mac mini connections
Mac mini also lists Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. A 10Gb Ethernet connection is a configurable option, not a feature to assume is included on every build. Check the exact port layout for the model you are considering before buying a hub or adapters.
For either computer, account for the display and any external storage you plan to connect. The mini’s smaller footprint does not eliminate the need to check whether its ports match your desk setup.

Performance claims: what Apple’s numbers do and do not show
Apple’s September 2026 availability release says the M6 Mac mini delivers up to 40 percent faster CPU performance, 2x faster graphics and storage, and up to 4x faster AI performance than previous-generation M4 mini systems. Apple says its testing was conducted in July 2026 and identifies the comparison system in the release. These are Apple-reported comparisons, not independent results or promises of the same improvement in every app.
For the new Mac Studio generation, Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement reports up to 1.3x faster CPU speed, 1.8x faster graphics, 2x faster storage and up to 4.3x faster AI performance. The comparisons and test caveats are in Apple’s announcement; treat these as vendor claims rather than general real-world speedups. No independent benchmark or hands-on comparison is established here.
How to choose your configuration
- Set a memory requirement. Identify the largest project or local model you need to keep in memory, then rule out configurations below that capacity.
- Count displays. If you need more than three external displays, the Studio is the listed option; confirm resolution and refresh-rate support for your exact connection mix.
- Check ports and network speed. Compare the actual device connections you need, and include a configurable 10Gb Ethernet option only if the chosen mini build offers it.
- Choose internal storage deliberately. Select enough SSD capacity for what must stay on the computer; compare maximum capacities by tier if you need a large internal library.
- Compare the price of the required builds. The starting price alone does not reveal the cost of the memory, storage or Ethernet configuration you need. If two builds meet your requirements, prefer the less expensive one.
