PlayStation Network (PSN) and Xbox Live suffered disruptions on Christmas Day 2014 after Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for an attack. The outage is well documented, but the available contemporary reporting does not independently prove who caused it, establish a user-data breach, or show that every feature was unavailable to every player. Recovery was staggered: Xbox Live’s core services were reported running on December 26, while PSN was still recovering.
What happened on Christmas Day?
On December 25, 2014, players reported trouble accessing Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox Live, services used for online gaming and related console functions. Contemporary coverage described a disruption affecting both networks during the holiday, when many people were using or setting up new consoles. Some users therefore had trouble getting online or completing setup, but reports do not establish that every console or feature was unusable.

News accounts commonly described the incident as a hacker attack or an apparent distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. A DDoS attempts to overwhelm an online service with traffic, making it difficult to reach; however, the reviewed reports do not include a primary incident report or forensic analysis that confirms the mechanics of this particular outage. Reuters’ contemporaneous coverage and reports from CBS and The Guardian describe the disruption and the responsibility claim, not independently verified attribution.

Lizard Squad claimed responsibility, and contemporaneous reports attributed the disruption to the group. That claim should not be treated as forensic proof of who directed the incident. The reporting reviewed for this account does not establish that customer information was stolen or that user accounts were compromised. It supports describing a network availability incident, not a confirmed breach of personal data.

When did Xbox Live and PSN come back?
There was no single restoration moment that applied to every feature, location, and user. Contemporary reports provide dated snapshots of services returning at different rates:

| Date | Reported status | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| December 25, 2014 | Disruptions reported on both networks | Christmas Day access problems affected PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, according to CBS, Reuters, and The Guardian. |
| December 26, 2014 | Xbox Live core services reported running; PSN still recovering | A Washington Post report described the different status of the services on that date. It is not proof that every feature was available worldwide. |
| December 28–29, 2014 | PSN connection problems continued as service was gradually restored | Reuters, republished by Investing.com, reported continuing problems and quoted Sony’s maintenance statement: “We are currently experiencing widespread network issues that are being addressed.” |
| December 29, 2014 | Sony and Microsoft said their networks were back online | CBS reported that both companies said their networks were back online. This does not specify an exact restoration time for every component or region. |
In practical terms, Xbox Live’s core services were reported back before PSN had fully recovered. Sony’s gradual restoration and the later statement that the networks were online are compatible: service availability can return unevenly rather than all at once.

Why did the outage matter to console owners?
The timing made the disruption especially frustrating. Christmas is a major day for new console setups, and some owners encountered problems connecting to online services while trying to use or configure their systems. Reports from CBS and The Washington Post describe that holiday impact.

The incident concerned network availability, not a demonstrated hardware defect. The reporting offers no basis for treating a console replacement or repair as a remedy for an online-service outage.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
