Graboid was a Docker-container-spreading cryptojacking worm described by Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 in October 2019. It used Docker daemons exposed to the internet without adequate access controls to launch Monero-mining containers, then used compromised hosts to seek and infect other exposed Docker systems. Unit 42 described an exposure and misconfiguration problem—not a Docker software vulnerability or named CVE.

What was the Graboid crypto-jacking worm?

Graboid was a worm that spread through Docker hosts and used their computing resources to mine Monero. Unit 42’s October 2019 analysis described the campaign as abusing Docker Engine Community Edition APIs that were reachable without authentication or authorization. The initial access path was the exposed daemon, rather than an identified flaw in Docker software. Unit 42’s original Graboid report

The distinction matters: describing the incident as “Docker being hacked” obscures the role of unsafe daemon exposure. A Docker daemon that an attacker can reach and use can provide powerful control over the engine and host; checking container images alone would not address that access path. Docker’s remote access documentation explains current secure-access considerations.

How did Graboid infect Docker hosts?

  1. Find an exposed daemon. Unit 42 said the attackers’ initial foothold came from Docker daemons exposed without authentication or authorization.
  2. Run a malicious container. The compromised host ran a malicious image. Unit 42 reported that its mining image carried an XMRig binary disguised as nginx.
  3. Fetch scripts and target information. Scripts retrieved from command-and-control servers performed campaign tasks. One reported the host’s available CPUs; another fetched a list of more than 2,000 IP addresses described as systems with unsecured Docker API endpoints.
  4. Mine intermittently and propagate. The scripts selected listed targets and deployed containers remotely, allowing compromised hosts to help spread the worm. Mining was intermittent rather than continuously active.

What did the historical scale figures show?

These figures describe the 2019 operation, not the current state of the internet. The original Unit 42 analysis reported more than 2,000 exposed Docker engines observed through Shodan at the time. It estimated an average mining period of about 250 seconds and miner activity of around 63%.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A 2021 Unit 42 retrospective on the 2019 Graboid operation described at least 2,000 exposed and compromised Docker daemon API systems and estimated roughly 1,300 miners operating at once using its activity assumption. It used a 65% estimate for miner operational time, rather than the original report’s 63%; the two report-era estimates should not be treated as a single precise measurement. The retrospective also said the malicious Docker Hub images were removed after the operation had been known for up to three months. Unit 42’s WatchDog retrospective

How can you tell if a Docker host may be compromised?

The following are reasonable investigation leads, not verified Graboid-specific detection signatures. Any one clue can have benign causes, so check it against expected workload and deployment activity.

  • Containers or images you do not recognize, including unexpected nginx-named workloads.
  • Unexplained CPU use or processes consistent with cryptocurrency mining.
  • Daemon access or container deployments that do not match your administrators’ actions, automation, or change records.

If you suspect compromise, preserve relevant logs, container and image details, and host evidence before removing artifacts where feasible. Follow your organization’s incident-response process; deleting suspicious containers immediately can destroy information useful for determining what happened.

How should you secure the Docker daemon?

Start by controlling who can reach and use the daemon. Docker’s official remote-access guidance is the appropriate reference for deployment-specific configuration; the right setup depends on your architecture.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Prefer local access where practical. Use the local Unix socket for local administration. For remote administration, Unit 42 recommended SSH; Docker’s current guidance also covers secure remote-access considerations.
  • Restrict network reachability. Do not leave an unauthenticated daemon API open to the internet. Apply firewall rules and limit inbound access to authorized systems and users.
  • Use appropriate authentication for remote access. If remote TCP access is required, configure it according to Docker’s current security guidance, rather than exposing an unauthenticated endpoint.
  • Vet image provenance. Prefer images from trusted sources and avoid unfamiliar registries or images from unknown user namespaces. Image trust helps reduce risk, but does not replace access controls on the daemon.
  • Monitor what runs. Regularly review containers and images for unexpected additions, and investigate unexplained workload or resource changes.

Unit 42’s organizational guidance put the central lesson plainly: “Never expose a docker daemon to the internet without a proper authentication mechanism.”
