WhiteSource announced on May 25, 2022, that it was changing its name to Mend and adding automated remediation for custom-code security findings. The announcement marked a shift from the company’s open-source security roots toward a broader application-security platform spanning open-source dependencies and proprietary code. Mend’s current remediation documentation describes suggested fixes, not changes that are automatically accepted or deployed.
What happened when WhiteSource became Mend?
On May 25, 2022, WhiteSource announced that the company would become Mend. Co-founder and CEO Rami Sass said the new name reflected the company’s expansion from open-source software security into security for both open-source and proprietary code. In his contemporaneous account, he described the company’s direction as spanning detection, remediation, and prevention. Mend’s announcement and Sass’s blog post record the rebrand and its stated rationale.
The move followed WhiteSource’s entry into static application security testing (SAST), announced after acquisitions of Xanitizer and DefenseCode. SAST extends the company’s focus from third-party components to weaknesses in an organization’s own code. WhiteSource’s February 2022 SAST announcement provides that earlier chronology.
What does Mend automatic code remediation do?
In the 2022 announcement, Mend described remediation across two areas: software composition analysis (SCA), which identifies risk in open-source dependencies, and newly announced SAST remediation for custom or first-party code. It said findings and suggested fixes would be presented in the developer’s repository. Its claim that fixes could be provided for each line of code was promotional language from the launch, not an independently tested guarantee. Mend’s announcement does not establish remediation accuracy, vulnerabilities prevented, or time saved.

Current Mend documentation describes AI-based remediation suggestions for supported SAST findings. Developers can inspect suggestions in the Mend Platform, a repository finding or report, pull requests, the CLI, or Jira, depending on configuration. The documented workflow is to review and apply a suggestion; the docs do not establish automatic acceptance or deployment of code changes. Mend’s SAST remediation documentation explains the available review surfaces and prerequisites.
Does Mend remediate SAST as well as open-source vulnerabilities?
The announcement’s scope included both SCA and SAST, but they address different code and findings. A fix is conditional: Mend says a supported finding must have an available remediation, and language support does not mean every finding in that language receives a fix.
Rank #2
| Capability | What it analyzes | What remediation means |
|---|---|---|
| SCA | Open-source dependencies | Mend described remediation for dependency findings; the announcement did not specify that every finding has an available fix. |
| SAST | Custom or first-party source code | For supported findings with an available remediation, Mend documentation describes a suggested code fix for developer review. |
Mend lists C/C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, TypeScript, and Rust among the languages covered by its SAST remediation documentation. CWE coverage varies by language, so the language list alone is not a guarantee that a particular issue is eligible. The remediation documentation describes current supported scope.
What must be enabled for SAST remediation?
Mend’s general guidance says remediation can be enabled through organization settings or repository integration configuration. The documented GitHub integration has additional conditions: Mend identifies access as controlled release and lists a contract addendum, SAST entitlement, an activated repository integration, and an opt-in setting as requirements. Check with Mend for availability and account eligibility before planning a rollout. The GitHub SAST remediation documentation details that setup.

For that GitHub integration, enabling the feature sends relevant source-code snippets to Mend’s model to generate suggestions. Mend specifies a minimum snippet size of 10 lines and says the setting can be disabled. Teams should assess that data flow and their organization’s code-sharing requirements before opting in.
How is Supply Chain Defender different?
The 2022 announcement also described a separate supply-chain control: Mend said it integrated Supply Chain Defender, formerly WhiteSource Diffend, into its JFrog Artifactory plugin. The stated purpose was to detect and block malicious open-source packages entering an enterprise codebase, with centralized policy enforcement for JavaScript and Ruby projects. That control acts on packages entering the development supply chain; it is not the mechanism that suggests a fix for a SAST code finding. Mend’s announcement describes the integration.

What did Mend report about its business at the rebrand?
Mend’s May 25, 2022 announcement reported revenue growth of 800% over the preceding three years, enterprise net retention of 127% in 2021, 350 new customers in the preceding year, and more than 1,000 customers, including more than 25% of the Fortune 100, at announcement time. These are historical company-reported figures, not independently audited current metrics or evidence that remediation improves security outcomes. The announcement also framed the company’s value proposition in CEO Rami Sass’s words: “Mend breaks the tradeoff between security and development delivery timelines…” That is Mend’s positioning, not an independent assessment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What did existing customers need to do?
Mend’s rebrand FAQ said customers did not need to take immediate action and that the company did not plan to require changes to existing product URLs. It also described a documentation move and said the old portal would become unavailable in January 2023. Those dates were migration-era guidance, not a current customer deadline. Mend’s rebrand FAQ preserves that historical guidance.
