Keep a charged phone and charger, first-aid supplies, a flashlight, warning devices, water, nonperishable food, needed medicine, warm coverings, and basic roadside tools in your car. Add snow-clearing and traction supplies in winter. Before leaving, check conditions and make sure any tire-changing equipment suits your vehicle and your ability to use it safely.
Year-round emergency car kit checklist
NHTSA’s summer-driving guidance recommends supplies for communication, minor roadside problems, and delays. Organize them so you can reach important items without unpacking the whole car.
- Communication: A cell phone and charger. A charged phone lets you call for help, NHTSA notes in its severe-weather guidance.
- First aid and personal needs: A first-aid kit and any medicines you may need.
- Visibility and light: A flashlight, flares or other warning devices, and a white flag.
- Tires and roadside repairs: Jumper cables, a tire-pressure gauge, basic repair tools, and duct tape. Carry a jack and ground mat only if they are suitable for your vehicle and you know how to use them safely.
- Protection and cleanup: Work gloves, a change of clothes, extra windshield washer fluid, and paper towels.
- Food and water: Drinking water and nonperishable food.
- Warmth and comfort: Emergency blankets, towels, and coats.
- Navigation: Maps, in addition to your phone.
A kit does not make every roadside repair safe. If traffic, weather, location, or your equipment makes a repair risky, stay out of harm’s way and call for assistance.
What to add for winter
Cold weather can turn a short delay into a more serious one. NHTSA’s winter driving guidance recommends adding tools for snow, traction, and warmth.

- A snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper
- Abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter for traction
- Blankets, a phone and charger, water, food, and necessary medicine
- Jumper cables, a flashlight, and warning devices such as flares or emergency markers
For electric and hybrid vehicles, NHTSA advises keeping the battery charged and minimizing battery drain in cold conditions. Its winter guidance also recommends keeping the gas tank close to full whenever possible.
How to stay safer if you are stranded in winter weather
- Stay with the car. NHTSA advises staying in the vehicle and avoiding overexertion while waiting for help.
- Make the vehicle visible. Use bright markers and turn on the interior dome light so others can see you.
- Check the exhaust pipe. Clear away snow so exhaust can escape.
- Use the engine sparingly for warmth. Run the vehicle only sporadically and long enough to stay warm. Do not run it for extended periods with the windows up or in an enclosed space: carbon monoxide can build up and be deadly.
NHTSA reports that in 2023 there were 320 fatal traffic crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes when snow or sleet was present at the time of the crash. Those figures describe crashes in those conditions; they do not show that a particular kit prevents them.

Prepare before you leave
- Check weather, traffic, and road conditions, and plan your route.
- Confirm that your phone is charged and the charger is in the car.
- In winter, keep the fuel tank close to full where possible; for electric and hybrid vehicles, keep the battery charged and limit cold-weather battery drain.
- Place items you may need quickly—such as your phone, flashlight, and warning devices—where they are accessible.

- Vehicle fit: Check that tire equipment, especially a jack, is compatible with your vehicle. Do not rely on equipment you cannot operate safely.
