A claimed crypto exchange listing is not proof that an announcement is genuine, that a token is safe, or that a platform has regulatory approval. Verify the claim through the exchange’s official channels reached independently, research the token and its promoters, and do not send money, account credentials, or personal information in response to an unsolicited message.

U.S. authorities warn about related schemes—including exchange impersonation, fake crypto investment sites, token impersonation, and hype-driven market manipulation—but have not established a separate, quantified category for “token listing scams.” Not every listing process or fee is fraudulent; treat pressure, secrecy, and unverifiable claims as reasons to stop and check.

How to check whether a crypto token is really listed

  1. Find the exchange independently. Type its known web address or use contact details you locate separately. Do not follow a link or call a number supplied in an unsolicited message. The FBI warns that scammers impersonate exchange employees to create urgency and ask for login or identification information. FBI guidance on cryptocurrency scams says not to use links or phone numbers supplied by the caller.
  2. Look for the announcement on the exchange’s own channels. Search its official announcements or listing pages for the exact token name and ticker. Check the precise website address: a convincing screenshot, social post, or lookalike site is not independent confirmation.
  3. Check who is making the claim. Verify the token’s project, company, promoters, and any claimed partners separately. Search their names alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” A listing claim repeated by an influencer or promoter is not confirmation from the exchange.
  4. Read the project materials critically. Look for a clear explanation of what rights the token provides, what product or service it supports, and how proceeds will be used. A white paper or project plan can help with due diligence, but does not prove that its claims are true.
  5. Compare the evidence with the pitch. Be cautious if the claim relies on a price spike, social-media excitement, guaranteed returns, or pressure to act before you can verify it. The CFTC advises researching tokens and the people behind them rather than buying on social-media tips or sudden price moves. CFTC customer advisory on virtual currencies and tokens

For a token or exchange claim, useful comparison questions include whether the exchange and contact route are independently verifiable; whether token rights and intended uses are clearly explained; whether promoters and affiliates can be identified; whether documentation supports the claims; and whether the project explains proceeds, liquidity, future demand, competition, technology changes, and theft risks.

Warning signs that call for an independent check

Unexpected contact and pressure to act

An unsolicited call, text, email, or direct message claiming to be from an exchange may be an impersonation attempt—especially if it creates urgency around your account or a listing and asks you to click a link, share identification, or provide your password. End the exchange and contact the company through a channel you found independently. Never give login information to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.

Guaranteed returns, little risk, or demands for crypto

Claims of high guaranteed returns with little or no risk are warning signs, as are unsolicited investment pitches and pressure to pay quickly in cryptocurrency. The SEC and CFTC describe these as red flags; the FTC also warns about promises of fast money and pressure to pay in crypto. SEC and CFTC investor alert on potentially fraudulent websites and FTC guidance on cryptocurrency and scams. A warning sign is not proof by itself, but it is reason to stop and verify rather than send funds.

Hype standing in for project details

A token promoted mainly through influencer endorsements, sudden price movement, or social-media tips deserves scrutiny. Find out what the project does and who is responsible for it. The CFTC notes that a token’s possible value can depend on liquidity, future demand, competing projects, technological changes, and theft risk; a claimed listing does not answer those questions.

Fees or taxes demanded to release supposed profits

In fraudulent crypto investment schemes, the FBI says scammers may show victims fake profits and then demand a fee or tax when they try to withdraw. Do not pay an extra charge to unlock a purported balance: payment does not guarantee access or recovery. Be equally wary of anyone offering to recover funds in exchange for an upfront payment. Does “listed,” “screened,” or “approved” mean a token is safe?

No. A platform or promoter using words such as “listed,” “approved,” or “screened” does not, by itself, establish that a token is safe or has official regulatory approval. The SEC has cautioned that selection standards claimed by some online digital-asset trading platforms are not reviewed by the SEC and should not be equated with the listing standards of national securities exchanges. This is a narrow caution, not a claim that every platform or token is unlawful. Whether a particular crypto asset or platform is subject to securities laws depends on the facts and circumstances; a listing claim alone does not settle its legal status.

What to do if you already sent money or information

  1. Stop sending funds. Do not pay more supposed taxes, withdrawal fees, account-unlock charges, or recovery costs.
  2. End contact through the suspicious channel. If you may have exposed exchange credentials, contact the real exchange using independently located contact details.
  3. Save evidence. Keep messages, emails, usernames, phone numbers, website addresses, app names, payment details, wallet addresses, transaction IDs and dates, and screenshots. The FBI asks people reporting investment fraud to provide information about the people or companies involved, communications, websites or apps, accounts and wallets, recipients, and screenshots when available.
  4. Report it through appropriate U.S. channels. Submit suspected internet crime to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FTC accepts crypto-scam reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov; the CFTC also accepts reports about token fraud at CFTC.gov/Complaint. These are U.S. reporting options; elsewhere, contact local consumer-protection authorities, financial regulators, or law enforcement.

Reporting records the incident; it does not guarantee that cryptocurrency will be recovered. The FBI’s 2026 advisory requests relevant communication, account, wallet, and transaction details when available. FBI/IC3 public service announcement on cryptocurrency investment fraud

What the available figures do—and do not—show

These statistics illustrate the scale of related crypto investment fraud, not the number of token listing scams. The FBI’s IC3 said victims lost more than $2 billion to cryptocurrency investment schemes during 2022. FBI IC3 2023 public service announcement The FTC said people had reported more than $80 million in losses to bogus cryptocurrency investments since October 2020, in a 2021 consumer alert. Neither figure measures listing-related fraud as a distinct category. The cited U.S. federal guidance covers neighboring schemes and should not be read as evidence that every listing fee or process is fraudulent.
