Before buying a stock on an AI-infrastructure thesis, look for evidence that demand has moved from forecasts and announced commitments into recognized revenue, deliverable capacity, and cash-generating economics. A useful assessment separates those stages, then checks whether the company you are considering sells into the part of the buildout that is actually growing.

Start by separating demand signals

AI infrastructure demand is not a single number. Evidence ranges from projected industry spending to customer plans, supplier commitments, deployments, and revenue a vendor has already recognized. Treat each signal according to what it proves:

  • Forecasts estimate future spending across a defined market. They provide context, not evidence that a particular vendor will win business.
  • Capital plans, orders, and commitments indicate intended purchases or planned capacity. Their value depends on funding, cancellation rights, delivery timing, and whether a usable site is ready.
  • Deployments and recognized revenue show that equipment or services have reached customers and been recorded as sales. They are realized results, though they do not by themselves establish durable growth or attractive returns.

NVIDIA cautions in its filing that demand estimates can be inaccurate and that customers may delay purchases when infrastructure or capital is unavailable. That is why an investor should not treat an order, a supply commitment, a market forecast, and a completed sale as interchangeable evidence.

Check what the vendor has actually reported

Begin with the vendor’s latest annual and quarterly filings. Identify the business segment most exposed to the buildout, then record its revenue, growth, disclosed unit volumes, margins, and cash generation where available. Read management’s explanation of the change: a segment may combine AI-related products with other data-center demand, so segment growth is not automatically a measure of AI sales alone.

AMD reported 2025 Data Center revenue of $16.6 billion, up 32% from $12.6 billion in 2024, primarily driven by EPYC processors and Instinct GPU accelerators. Those are company-reported historical results; the filing does not make them a guarantee of future demand. The mix also matters: EPYC processors and Instinct accelerators serve different functions, and the reported segment figure should not be read as GPU-only revenue.

Map the company to its actual layer of the infrastructure stack before drawing a conclusion. A vendor may sell accelerators, CPUs, complete servers, networking, colocation capacity, or compute services. Broad adoption of AI does not establish that every layer—or every supplier within a layer—will capture revenue.

Separate orders and commitments from completed sales

Review disclosed backlog, purchase obligations, remaining performance obligations, supply agreements, and customer contracts, but retain each filing’s own definition. For every large figure, ask:

  • Who is legally committed, and can either side cancel, defer, or change the order?
  • What conditions must be met before delivery or payment?
  • When is the equipment expected to ship, and is the customer’s site funded and ready?
  • Does the figure represent an order, a supplier obligation, a contract value, or recognized revenue?

NVIDIA reported $279 billion of supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026. The same filing describes deployment and market risks, including possible customer delays related to infrastructure availability, capital constraints, and gradual technology adoption. The commitment figure signals planned activity and exposure to fulfilling supply; it does not establish that customers have deployed or paid for an equivalent amount of infrastructure.

Compare a commitment with subsequent shipments, revenue recognition, inventory, receivables, and operating cash flow. If commitments rise but shipments or cash collection do not follow, investigate timing, customer readiness, and the company’s exposure to inventory or supplier costs rather than assuming the gap is harmless.

Verify that planned capacity can be delivered

A data center requires more than a purchase order. Relevant dependencies include a site, power, a construction shell, cooling and electrical systems, a grid connection, equipment, networking, and a customer prepared to use the capacity. A project announced on paper is not equivalent to powered and revenue-generating capacity.

NVIDIA identifies land, power, shell, and capital as crucial to customer buildouts and warns that shortages could affect its financial performance. Equinix cites power limitations and equipment delays; its expansion decisions consider customer demand, available power and capacity, network access, required investment, and the expected time to free-cash-flow break-even.

Where filings disclose project milestones, track the progression from announcement to permitting, financing, construction, power availability, equipment installation, commissioning, and revenue generation. This is a practical way to organize project status, not a universal industry reporting standard. A missed milestone or long delay can push revenue out even when demand remains strong.

Test the economics and funding behind growth

Demand can be real while returns are poor. Look for evidence that utilization, pricing, margins, operating cash flow, and returns on incremental capital support the cost of expansion. Also examine customer concentration, debt and equity funding, supplier obligations, and the timing mismatch between paying for capacity and collecting from customers.

For operators building or leasing data-center capacity, compare the investment required with expected utilization and cash generation. Equinix’s stated use of investment needs and time to free-cash-flow break-even in expansion decisions illustrates why growth in capacity alone is not enough to establish attractive economics.

Super Micro Computer reported $34.2 billion of current obligations related to non-cancelable purchase commitments as of June 30, 2026, and noted material financing activity. This is an obligation measure in that company’s specific filing context—not a measure of equivalent end-customer demand. Read it alongside the company’s financing, inventory, shipment, and cash-flow disclosures rather than treating it as a sales figure.

Keep market forecasts in a separate category

The following figures are forecasts attributed to UBS, IDC, and Gartner in Chronoscale’s FY2026 Form 10-K. Chronoscale says it did not independently verify the underlying estimates and warns that forecasts are uncertain. They are secondhand forecasts reported in a company filing, not publisher-verified actual spending or direct confirmation of any vendor’s sales.

Attribution in Chronoscale’s FY2026 filing Forecast and scope How to interpret it
UBS Global AI capital expenditure: approximately $423 billion in 2025, $571 billion in 2026, and $1.3 trillion by 2030. A broad global AI-capex estimate; not a forecast of one vendor’s revenue.
IDC Worldwide AI-infrastructure hardware spending: approximately $487 billion in 2026 and more than $1 trillion by 2029. The filing defines the scope as servers, storage, and networking, excluding software and services. A hardware-spending estimate with a specified category scope.
Gartner End-user spending on AI-optimized IaaS: approximately $37.5 billion in 2026, with 55% expected to support inference. An estimate for a cloud-infrastructure service category, not a hardware-sales total.

These measures cover different categories and should not be added together. Before using a forecast, record its publisher, estimate date, geography, spending category, and horizon; then keep it distinct from reported company results. A large industry forecast can support a thesis about market opportunity, but it does not show which suppliers will win, when sales will be recognized, or whether those sales will produce acceptable returns.

Compare vendors on the same five tests

Use a consistent scorecard across companies rather than comparing one firm’s revenue with another firm’s orders or market exposure:

  1. Realized AI-linked demand: What revenue and growth are reported, and how much of the relevant segment is clearly attributable to AI infrastructure?
  2. Commitment quality: Are orders funded, cancellable, conditional, or subject to delay? What evidence shows conversion into shipment and revenue?
  3. Delivery capacity: Are power, sites, equipment, networking, and customer readiness sufficient to meet stated schedules?
  4. Customer concentration: How dependent is the business on a small number of cloud providers or other large buyers?
  5. Economic conversion: Are margins, utilization, financing, capital intensity, and cash collection consistent with profitable growth?

Turn the evidence into an investment decision

A practical review can fit into a simple worksheet for each company:

  • Reported result: segment, fiscal period, revenue, growth, margin, and management’s stated drivers.
  • Forward indicator: the exact kind of order, contract, backlog, or commitment, including its definition and date.
  • Execution status: what remains before the capacity can be powered, equipped, commissioned, and used.
  • Economic test: what the filings show about cash generation, financing, utilization, and returns on new investment.
  • Open risk: the one or two dependencies most likely to delay revenue or weaken returns.

Update the worksheet when the next filing arrives and check whether earlier commitments progressed into shipments, reported revenue, and cash. This is an assessment of company and industry demand, not a valuation, price target, or stock recommendation: even strong demand does not by itself establish that a stock is attractively priced or that shareholders will earn a return.
