To prepare your home for flash flooding and heavy rain, learn your local risk, sign up for official alerts, make an evacuation plan, and take practical steps to limit water damage before a storm threatens. Clear drainage, protect documents and valuables, and ask qualified professionals whether measures such as a sump-pump backup or sewer check valve suit your home. Flooding can happen outside mapped high-risk areas, and no home measure guarantees protection; follow officials’ instructions and put people’s safety ahead of property.

How do I prepare my home for a flood?

Start before rain is forecast. Check your local flood risk and warning options, plan what your household will do, and address property vulnerabilities while there is time to make informed decisions.

Check local risk and alerts

  • Use FEMA’s Floods | Ready.gov page to find the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and check your area. A map is one input, not a guarantee: flooding can happen where it rains, including beyond mapped high-risk lines.
  • Ask local emergency management about neighborhood-specific flood risks and warning systems. Sign up for community alerts and know where to get official weather and emergency information. Ready.gov also identifies NOAA Weather Radio as an alert channel.

Make a household plan

  • Decide where household members and pets will go if evacuation or sheltering is advised, and how everyone will get there. Learn and practice routes in advance.
  • Account for individual needs, including medications, mobility, chargers, and other essentials. Gather several days of supplies so they are available if you need to leave or shelter.
  • Know what you will take if time allows, but do not delay evacuation to collect belongings. Follow local officials’ instructions; shelter in place only when that is the safer official option.

Protect documents and valuables

Move important belongings above likely water levels when it is safe to do so. Keep important papers in a waterproof container and maintain password-protected digital copies. Do not wait to move possessions if officials have ordered evacuation.

What should I do before heavy rain?

When a heavy-rain or flood threat approaches, switch from home projects to monitoring and readiness. Keep up with local alerts and weather information, and act on official instructions promptly.

  1. Monitor local weather, emergency alerts, and instructions from emergency officials.
  2. If told to evacuate, leave promptly. Take critical supplies and documents only if they are ready and doing so is safe.
  3. Move valuables to higher levels only if there is time and it is safe. Never put belongings ahead of evacuation.
  4. Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwater, and do not go around road closures or barricades. Water can be contaminated and conceal hazards.

FEMA’s Be Prepared for a Flood hazard sheet says to evacuate immediately when ordered. It also advises operating generators and other fuel-burning equipment outdoors, at least 20 feet from building openings such as windows, doors, and garages.

How can I reduce flood damage to my home?

Routine maintenance and property-specific improvements may reduce some risks, but they cannot prevent every flood. FEMA/Ready.gov guidance recommends clearing gutters and drains and identifies several measures to discuss with a qualified professional.

Measure What it may help with Important qualification
Clear gutters, downspouts, and drains Keeping drainage paths clear of debris. Routine maintenance cannot prevent all flooding.
Sump pump with a battery backup Removing water in a home that has a sump system when utility power is interrupted. Check whether your home has a sump pit; capacity, backup runtime, compatibility, installation, and maintenance are property-specific.
Sewer backwater check valve Helping prevent floodwater from backing up through drains. Ask a qualified plumber about plumbing compatibility and local requirements.
Elevate susceptible utilities Reducing exposure of equipment such as a furnace, water heater, or electrical panel where flooding is a risk. Building-specific work may require a qualified contractor and must comply with local rules.
Basement waterproofing or other property-specific work Addressing vulnerabilities particular to the building and site. Ask a qualified building professional what is appropriate; no single measure guarantees protection.
Sandbags Creating a temporary flood barrier where appropriate. Site-dependent and temporary; follow local advice and never rely on barriers instead of evacuating when ordered.

FEMA/Ready.gov discusses sump pumps, check valves, gutters and drains, and sandbags in its flood guidance. Its hurricane preparation material also suggests elevating susceptible utilities. These are options to assess for your property, not universal instructions to install equipment.

Choose equipment for the home, not a generic recommendation

If you are considering a sump pump or backup, confirm that it fits the sump system and installation. Compare backup power source and runtime, capacity appropriate to the installation, maintenance needs, installation requirements, and total cost. The cited FEMA/Ready.gov guidance does not provide comparative product specifications or model tests, so it does not establish a universally best pump.

Does homeowners insurance cover flooding?

FEMA/Ready.gov says standard homeowners policies do not cover flooding and points readers to flood coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Treat this as general U.S. guidance, not a determination of what your policy covers. Ask your insurer or an NFIP resource about eligibility, coverage terms, limits, exclusions, and the policy’s effective date. Review options well before a flood threat is imminent.
