To reduce avoidable contact with plastics in drinks, use a reusable glass, ceramic, or stainless-steel cup when practical; brew loose-leaf tea in a reusable infuser instead of a plastic-containing tea bag; and avoid heating drinks in plastic when a suitable alternative is available. These are precautionary choices, not proven ways to prevent illness. The FDA says current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that the levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods pose a health risk.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Researchers have detected microplastics in some foods and drinks, including tea and bottled water. Detection alone does not establish that a drink is harmful: the FDA says current evidence does not demonstrate that the levels detected in foods or water pose a health risk. It also points to a lack of standardized methods for detecting, measuring, and characterizing these particles, and notes that many studies have limitations in accuracy or specificity.
Evidence about particles released from particular materials is more developed than evidence about the health effects of drinking them. There is no established exposure threshold in the sources considered here, and no reliable basis for ranking coffee, tea, tap water, or bottled drinks by total health risk. A precaution can reduce contact with a material without proving that the material caused harm or that avoiding it improves health.
Practical ways to reduce contact with drink materials

Tea bags: material and brewing conditions matter
A 2026 systematic review identified 19 studies that directly measured particle release from tea bags, with literature covered through the end of 2025. It reports that plastic-containing bags—including non-woven polypropylene and nylon—can release micro- and nanoplastics under hot brewing conditions. The amounts measured differed with bag material, water temperature, steeping time, and agitation. The review also warns that testing methods are not standardized and that further risk assessment is needed.

One number should not be mistaken for a general estimate: Australia’s 2026 Microplastics and Health Report summarizes a study reporting 11.6 billion microparticles and 3.1 billion nanoparticles per cup at 95°C for a tested polyamide tea bag. That is a result from one study and one material under its test conditions—not a universal count for tea bags, a typical-cup estimate, or a health-risk threshold.
“Paper” or “eco-friendly” on a tea-bag label does not by itself establish that every part of the bag is plastic-free. Some composite or nominally eco-friendly bags also showed measurable release in studies reviewed. If material composition matters to you, check the manufacturer’s information; otherwise, loose leaves and a reusable infuser are a straightforward way to avoid a disposable bag.

Coffee cups: laboratory findings are not a serving-by-serving forecast
Some laboratory studies have found particle release from tested single-use beverage cups, but their results depend on the cup material and exposure conditions. In a 2022 summary, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) described a test in which water at 100°C remained in low-density polyethylene (LDPE)-lined single-use cups for 20 minutes; researchers detected nanoparticles in the water. That setup is a laboratory exposure, not an estimate for every cup, coffee, or real-world serving.
A 2024 study examined four types of single-use cups—polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene-coated paper, and expanded polystyrene—with water at 4°C, 50°C, and 80°C and selected contact times of up to 20 minutes. Those test categories help show why material, temperature, and contact time matter, but the tested cups do not represent every brand, drink, or pattern of use. Do not compare particle counts across studies as if their methods and conditions were interchangeable.

If you want a simple precaution for takeaway coffee, use a reusable cup made of glass, ceramic, or stainless steel where practical. A French press or metal coffee filter is another reusable option, but the evidence summarized here does not show that any particular brewing device eliminates microplastics.

The FDA reports that microplastics have been detected in bottled water, but detection is not proof of a health effect. The agency also says the United States currently has no regulatory levels for microplastics or nanoplastics in drinking water. That does not mean tap water is unsafe, that bottled water is safer, or that switching water sources will reliably reduce particle intake.

Studies of drinks other than water remain limited. Australia’s 2026 report says studies are often small, commonly consist of one study per drink type, and use varied methods. It says the available studies of bottled drinks do not establish how much those drinks contribute to overall ingestion. Reducing bottled-water use is therefore a reasonable waste and material-contact precaution where practical, not a response to a demonstrated health risk.

How to choose a realistic option
- Start with what touches the drink. If you want to reduce plastic contact, choose glass, ceramic, or stainless steel for a reusable cup or bottle where it fits your routine.
- Pay attention to heat and contact time. Laboratory release findings concern specified conditions; they cannot be applied equally to a cold drink, a brief pour, or a long hot soak.
- Check tea-bag materials if needed. A paper-like appearance or broad environmental label is not a full material specification.
- Balance convenience and reuse. Carry a cup or infuser only if it is practical for you; the evidence here does not establish that buying a particular product produces a health benefit.
- Do not buy a filter on an unverified promise. The sources summarized here do not establish a validated personal test or show that a particular filter addresses the particles and conditions relevant to a given drink.
