Yes, reusable cups can release microplastics, but the available comparison does not show that every reusable cup sheds them—or that any cup is entirely particle-free. A 2025 study reported fewer microplastics from the reusable cups it tested than from the single-use cups in its comparison. For everyday care, wash a reusable cup regularly with hot water and washing-up liquid, use a dishwasher only if the manufacturer approves it, and dry it thoroughly.
What research says about microplastics from reusable cups
The 2025 comparison found lower microplastic release from its tested reusable cups than from its tested single-use cups. That result applies to the products and conditions in the study; it does not establish that all reusable cups release fewer particles, rank every reusable-cup material, or prove that reusable cups never shed microplastics. The study abstract does not provide a universal material ranking or a reusable-cup particle count. Read the study abstract.
It is important not to confuse that comparison with a separate 2024 study of disposable cups. Akbulut and colleagues tested single-use polypropylene, polystyrene, expanded-polystyrene and polyethylene-coated paper cups—not reusable cups. Across the study’s selected water temperatures and contact times, measured release ranged from 126 to 1,420 particles per litre. The highest value came from a polypropylene cup tested with water at 50 °C for 20 minutes; the lowest came from a polyethylene-coated paper cup with water at 4 °C and zero-minute contact. These results describe those disposable cups under those test conditions, not what to expect from a reusable cup. Read the single-use cup study.
The same disposable-cup study reported 52–65% lower particle counts after the cups were pre-rinsed with ultrapure water. That was a pre-test treatment for the tested single-use cups, not a validated cleaning method for reusable cups. It does not show that rinsing a reusable cup removes microplastics.

How to choose and inspect a reusable cup
Rather than relying on a claim that a particular material is “microplastic-free,” compare cups by how easily they can be cleaned, whether their surface is smooth, and whether their care instructions fit your use. Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) lists smooth, easy-to-clean porcelain, stainless steel, rigid temperature-stable plastics and glass as suitable materials when they comply with food-contact rules. This is guidance on suitability and cleanability, not a ranking of microplastic shedding. See BfR’s reusable-cup FAQ.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for dishwasher, heat and microwave compatibility.
- Inspect the inside and rim for roughness, hairline cracks or visible wear.
- Stop using the cup once its surface is no longer smooth or shows cracks or wear. BfR advises using reusable cups only while their surfaces remain smooth and free of hairline cracks and visible wear.
Take care with cups marketed as bamboo
Some cups promoted as bamboo or made from natural materials are melamine-formaldehyde plastic containing plant fillers. BfR warns that hot or acidic drinks can cause melamine and formaldehyde to migrate from melamine-formaldehyde articles. Do not use these cups for hot coffee or tea; follow the product’s instructions for other uses.

How to clean a reusable cup safely
- Wash it regularly. Use hot water and washing-up liquid. Clean a visibly dirty cup before refilling it.
- Use a dishwasher only when approved. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first; not every reusable cup is dishwasher-safe.
- Dry it completely. Dry the cup thoroughly with a clean method or leave it to dry fully before storing or using it again.
- Follow the care instructions. Observe the maker’s limits for heat, cleaning and microwave use. Do not put hot or acidic drinks in melamine-formaldehyde cups.
- Keep the drinking surface clean during refills. At self-service machines, avoid letting your cup touch the dispensing nozzle.
- Replace damaged cups. Retire a cup if its surface becomes rough, cracked or visibly worn.
These steps are routine hygiene advice; they are not a guarantee that a cup will release no particles. BfR recommends regular washing with hot water and washing-up liquid, or dishwasher cleaning when the manufacturer says it is suitable, followed by thorough drying. BfR’s cleaning guidance.

Reusable food-contact items can be made from plastic, stainless steel, silicone and other materials. The Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) inventoried commonly used materials and prioritized 20 substances for targeted follow-up research based on toxicological potential and the potential to be released into food. That inventory is not evidence that every identified substance is released from every cup at harmful levels. RIVM also reports that regular cleaning makes bacterial illness from reusable food-contact items unlikely, while sharing a drinking container can raise the hygiene concern. Read RIVM’s inventory.
