MongoDB’s journaling behavior and its default write concern are separate settings. On current releases, journaling is not an on/off switch: MongoDB removed the old journal enable/disable options starting in version 6.1. To set a cluster-wide default for writes that do not specify their own concern, use setDefaultRWConcern on the replica-set primary or through mongos for a sharded cluster. Majority writes normally wait for journal persistence because writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault defaults to true, but topology and configuration matter.
Understand the defaults before changing them
MongoDB’s implicit write concern is generally { w: "majority" }, but it has an arbiter exception. If a replica set has at least one arbiter and the number of non-arbiter voting members is not greater than the voting majority, the implicit concern is { w: 1 }. For example, MongoDB’s defaults reference gives two non-arbiters plus one arbiter as a topology with an implicit { w: 1 }; four non-arbiters plus one arbiter yields { w: "majority" }. Check the voting topology rather than assuming every replica set has the same implicit default. MongoDB’s implicit-default rules
A cluster-wide default is not a forced setting for every application write. MongoDB applies it only when the operation does not explicitly specify a write concern. Driver settings can be set at client, database, collection, and operation scope, with more specific values overriding broader ones. In a transaction, the transaction-level write concern governs commit; operation, collection, and database concerns do not apply. Write concern specification and scope Write concern and transactions
Set a cluster-wide default write concern
Run setDefaultRWConcern against the primary of a replica set. For a sharded cluster, issue the command through mongos; the cluster-wide setting is stored through the config server replica set and is not configured separately on each shard. This example sets the default to majority and requests majority acknowledgment for the administrative command itself:

db.adminCommand({
setDefaultRWConcern: 1,
defaultWriteConcern: { w: "majority" },
writeConcern: { w: "majority" }
})
The defaultWriteConcern object requires a w field and accepts write concern values other than w: 0. The command-level writeConcern controls acknowledgment of this configuration command, not the default being installed. Using { w: "majority" } there is recommended when you want the change propagated to a majority. The command requires feature compatibility version (FCV) 4.4 or later. Starting in MongoDB 5.0, after a cluster-wide write concern has been set, the command cannot unset it. setDefaultRWConcern command reference
If you omit wtimeout, its value defaults to 0, so the command can wait without a timeout for the requested acknowledgment. If you configure a timeout, choose one appropriate to the cluster’s replication and availability profile. A write concern timeout reports that the requested acknowledgment was not reached in time; it does not undo changes already made on the primary. MongoDB write concern timeout behavior

Verify the stored setting
Use getDefaultRWConcern to inspect the default and its source:
db.adminCommand({ getDefaultRWConcern: 1 })
Check defaultWriteConcern and defaultWriteConcernSource. A source of implicit means MongoDB supplied the implicit value; global means a cluster-wide value was configured. After an update, secondaries and individual mongos instances may briefly return or use stale cached values. Verify against the appropriate deployment endpoint and allow time for propagation before treating an immediate mismatch as a failed change. getDefaultRWConcern command reference setDefaultRWConcern propagation details

Choose acknowledgment and durability deliberately
w and j control different parts of a write acknowledgment. w specifies how many replica-set members must acknowledge; j specifies whether eligible members acknowledge after applying the write in memory or after writing it to the on-disk journal. MongoDB write concern reference
| Setting | Acknowledgment behavior | Journal behavior when j is omitted |
Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
{ w: 1 } |
The primary acknowledges. | For numeric w, acknowledgment is after in-memory application unless j: true is requested. |
Less waiting for other members, but does not require a replica-set majority. |
{ w: "majority" } |
The calculated voting/data-bearing majority acknowledges. | With the default writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault: true, majority writes wait for journal persistence; setting it to false permits acknowledgment after in-memory application. |
Can take longer or fail to complete while enough members are unavailable. With only the calculated majority’s number of data-bearing voters, losing one can prevent majority acknowledgment. |
{ w: 1, j: true } |
The primary acknowledges after the requested journal persistence. | Not applicable: journal persistence is explicitly requested. | Requests journal persistence on the acknowledging primary but does not require acknowledgments from other members. |
For majority writes with j unspecified, writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault determines whether MongoDB waits for journal persistence; its default is true. Setting it to false weakens that durability behavior: MongoDB warns that acknowledged majority writes may roll back after a transient loss, such as a crash and restart, of a majority of nodes. Do not treat w: "majority" as an unconditional journal flush if this setting has been changed. writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault

Neither one setting nor one acknowledgment level is best for every workload. Stronger acknowledgment can add latency or become unavailable when members are down; weaker acknowledgment may return sooner but provides less replication or journal assurance. Decide which outcome the application needs, and account for the actual voting topology when evaluating majority behavior.

If your goal is to adjust journal timing rather than turn journaling on or off, storage.journal.commitIntervalMs is the relevant mongod configuration option. It controls the journal commit interval. storage.syncPeriodSecs is a separate data-file synchronization setting, not a journaling control. storage.journal.commitIntervalMs storage.syncPeriodSecs
