Apple is expanding iPhone production in India, particularly for phones destined for the United States, but the available evidence does not show that the company has left China or completed a broad relocation. Its manufacturing still depends on a multinational supplier network, and the figures reported for India refer to specific U.S.-market targets and time periods—not a verified global production split.
What “moving production beyond China” means
Apple describes its supply chain as large and complex. In its FY2025 Form 10-K, the company says a significant majority of its manufacturing is performed in whole or in part by outsourcing partners located primarily in China mainland, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. It is important to distinguish where an iPhone is assembled from where its components and other supplier work take place. Apple’s U.S. investment announcement, for example, covers supplier and component activity; it is not evidence of a wholesale move of iPhone final assembly to the United States.
Why India matters to U.S.-bound iPhones
India’s growing role is clearest in reporting about iPhones sold in the United States. Reuters reported on April 25, 2025, citing a source, that Apple aimed to make most iPhones sold in the U.S. at factories in India by the end of 2026. Separately, the Associated Press reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook said on May 1, 2025, that most iPhones sold in the U.S. in the then-current fiscal quarter would be sourced from India. That was a statement about a particular quarter and destination market. It does not establish the share of iPhones made in India for the rest of the world, or Apple’s global production mix. How to read Apple’s U.S. manufacturing commitment
In August 2025, Apple announced a $600 billion U.S. commitment and an American Manufacturing Program supporting supplier and component activity. The announced amount describes the scale of Apple’s stated U.S. commitment; it is not a measure of iPhone assembly transferred to the country. Expanding production across locations can reduce reliance on a single geography and give the company more flexibility when trade measures or disruptions affect manufacturing.
