Use the reactable package to create an interactive R table with expandable rows. Pass a function to details to define what appears when a row opens; that content can be formatted HTML or a second, nested table.
Install reactable and create a basic expandable table
Install the package from CRAN, load it, and pass a data frame or matrix to reactable(). In the example below, the details renderer receives the selected row’s index and returns content for that row.

)For production use, replace the example text with information associated with that row. Return formatted HTML with htmltools::tags or htmltools::div, and use index to look up the corresponding record or detail data. The reactable reference documents the details renderer and an example that displays the selected row’s values.
Show related records in a nested table
Expandable rows are useful when a parent row summarizes a group and readers need to inspect its underlying records. The pattern is to build a summary table, use the selected summary row to identify its group, filter the original data to that group, and return a second reactable() inside the details area.

)Here, clicking a parent row expands its details. The nested table is indented in an HTML container, outlined, and highlighted. Replace Manufacturer, Price, and the summary calculations with columns and grouping logic from your own data. This parent-and-child approach is shown in the reactable cookbook.
Use expandable tables in R Markdown or Shiny
reactable() returns an HTML widget, so it can be used in an R Markdown document. For a Shiny app, place reactableOutput() in the UI and render the table with renderReactable() in the server function. The project README documents this output-and-render pattern.

Choose table behavior to match the task
Sorting and pagination are enabled by default. The package also provides options for filtering, searching, grouping, column formatting, row selection, and virtual scrolling. Use details for content revealed on expansion and defaultExpanded to control whether rows start open. For grouped tables, paginateSubRows controls pagination of subrows.
Choose the details content based on what readers need after expanding: explanatory text or values for a single record, or a nested table when they need to inspect related records. Then configure sorting, filtering, pagination, and other options around how readers will explore the data. These capabilities describe reactable; they do not establish a complete, current comparison with alternative R table packages.
