AI infrastructure spending covers both the equipment used to build and run AI systems and the ongoing cost of operating or renting computing capacity. It includes accelerators, servers, networks, data centers, electricity, facilities, maintenance, personnel, leases, and cloud services. The headline numbers are easy to misread: company capital-expenditure totals often include non-AI investments, while estimates of training costs may be models rather than reported bills.
What are AI companies spending money on?
The spending falls into two broad buckets: long-lived capacity and the recurring costs of using it. Companies may buy and operate their own equipment, lease infrastructure, or rent compute from a cloud provider. A company’s total capital expenditure (capex) is therefore not the same thing as its AI-only spending, and it is not a direct measure of what it pays to train a model.
| Spending category | What it covers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased equipment | Accelerator chips, servers, and networking equipment | Typically a capital asset: cash may be paid or financed up front, while the cost is recognized over time under the company’s accounting and useful-life assumptions. |
| Data-center capacity | Facilities and the supporting power delivery, cooling, construction, land, and network connections | Building or expanding capacity takes more than buying servers. The sources cited here do not establish a reliable share of total spending for each facility component. |
| Owned-capacity operations | Electricity, facilities, maintenance, and personnel | Ongoing costs of keeping capacity available and productive; these are distinct from the purchase price of equipment. |
| Leases and cloud usage | Leased infrastructure or compute purchased from a cloud provider | Shifts how capacity is paid for and who owns the physical assets. Cash spending, recognized expense, and ownership can differ. |
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy described the company’s assumptions in its 2025 shareholder letter: “However, these capex investments fund assets with many-year useful lives (30+ years for datacenters; 5-6 years for chips, servers, and networking gear).” Those are Amazon’s stated useful-life assumptions, not universal accounting rules. Other companies may use different assumptions, and accounting treatment can affect how costs appear over time.
How much does AI infrastructure cost?
There is no standardized, audited total in the sources cited here for AI-only infrastructure spending across companies. Available figures measure different things, so they should be read on their own terms rather than combined into one estimate.

| Figure | What it measures | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| $495 billion | Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft’s combined 2026 capex projections, as compiled by S&P Global from their fourth-quarter 2025 earnings calls | A dated secondary compilation of total capex, not a verified AI-only spending total. Company totals can include non-AI projects and may not treat leases or spending identically. |
| 28% annual growth in the first half of 2025, versus 5.5% in 2024 | U.S. investment in information-processing equipment and software, as reported by the White House in 2026 | A broad category that extends beyond AI infrastructure; it is neither an AI-company total nor a measure of model-training cost. |
| 2.4× per year since 2016, with a 90% confidence interval of 2.0× to 2.9× | Epoch AI paper authors’ 2024 estimate of growth in the amortized cost of the most compute-intensive AI training runs | A modeled historical estimate, not a company-disclosed invoice and not a forecast for every model. |
These figures are not directly comparable: they differ in geography, time period, cost definition, and method. The capex projection is a company-spending compilation, the White House figure tracks a broad U.S. investment category, and the Epoch AI figure models historical training-run costs.
Why do AI companies need so many chips and data centers?
Training and serving AI models require substantial computing capacity. Accelerators perform much of the computation; servers house and connect the chips; networks move data among machines; and data centers provide the facilities and power needed to run them. Power delivery, cooling, construction, and network links also affect when capacity can be deployed and what it costs.

Buying equipment does not guarantee that it will be used efficiently. If expensive capacity sits idle, its fixed costs are spread across fewer productive workloads. Utilization is one reason two companies with similar equipment can have different economics, but there is no sufficiently comparable utilization figure established here to quantify that effect.
How do training and inference costs differ?
Training is the concentrated computing work involved in developing or updating a model. Inference is the repeated work of generating responses or other outputs when people or applications use a model. Training costs are often discussed as the cost of a particular run; inference costs accrue as the model serves usage over time.

Neither cost has a universal price per model, query, or token. It depends on factors including the hardware, utilization, energy, model size, software efficiency, and how the service is priced. For example, Microsoft reported a 40% improvement in inference throughput for its most-used models across Copilot on its FY2026 Q3 call. That is a company-specific throughput report; it does not establish a universal decrease in AI costs or the change in total cost for all workloads.
What do cloud credits pay for?
Cloud credits offset eligible charges for cloud usage under the provider’s terms. They can help an AI company pay for compute without owning the data center or equipment that supplies it. Credits do not make the underlying capacity costless: they are a purchasing mechanism applied to qualifying usage, while the provider funds or owns infrastructure and sells access to it.

There is no common credit value or universal set of eligibility and expiration terms established here. The amount and conditions depend on the named provider’s current offer, so a credit figure should be checked against that provider’s official terms rather than treated as an industry standard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can a company’s spending and its AI costs look different?
Cloud providers can finance and own data-center capacity, then sell compute to AI companies and other customers. Stanford’s AI Index describes this role for major cloud providers. As a result, the company building a model may pay for rented compute rather than record the full cost of constructing the facility and buying its equipment. Leases can also make cash spending, recognized expenses, and physical ownership diverge; Alphabet has said it entered significant leasing arrangements to meet compute demand.

Company disclosures may aggregate AI and non-AI infrastructure, and accounting treatment affects when costs appear. For a useful comparison, align the scope and basis before reading two figures side by side:
- Total capex or AI-attributed spending: a broad company capex figure cannot be assumed to represent AI investment alone.
- Owned, leased, or rented capacity: clarify who owns the assets and whether a figure includes leases or cloud purchases.
- Training or inference: a training-run estimate is not the cost of serving users over time.
- Absolute spend or cost per output: total spending and the cost of delivering a unit of compute or output answer different questions.
- Reporting period and status: distinguish calendar from fiscal years, actual spending from projections, and the date the figure was reported.
- Disclosed figure or modeled estimate: a company report, a secondary compilation, and a research estimate do not have the same evidentiary basis.
If those dimensions do not match, the figures are not directly comparable. A headline investment total can show the scale of a company’s buildout, but it cannot by itself tell you how much was spent specifically on AI, what a particular model cost to train, or how much it costs to answer each user request.
