The AI Gateway is a set of plugins built on Kong Gateway; its AI Proxy provides a common interface across supported AI providers. These three themes are a useful way to understand the release, not an official ranking. Kong dated Gateway Enterprise 3.10.0.0 to March 27, 2025.
1. Provider-agnostic AI proxying
Kong’s AI Proxy plugin can accept requests in supported standard formats, translate them for a configured AI provider, and transform the response back into a standard format. Kong describes the plugin as one that “lets you transform and proxy requests to a number of AI providers and models.” This can reduce provider-specific integration work in client applications and give teams a central place to manage credentials, governance, and observability.
Provider-agnostic does not mean every provider, model, or capability works identically. Confirm that the provider, model, request format, and features you need are supported by the plugin version you plan to deploy. See Kong’s AI Proxy documentation and its AI Gateway documentation.
2. Plugins for RAG document injection and PII sanitization
Gateway 3.10 introduced two distinct AI-related plugins. AI RAG Injector supports automatic document injection to simplify retrieval-augmented generation pipelines. AI Sanitizer can sanitize PII in requests before they are proxied by AI Proxy or AI Proxy Advanced.

- AI RAG Injector: helps add documents to AI requests for RAG workflows.
- AI Sanitizer: addresses PII in request data before proxying.
Sanitization is a data-handling capability, not a guarantee of complete security or regulatory compliance. Teams still need to assess their own data flows, policies, and obligations.
3. More routing controls in AI Proxy Advanced
The 3.10 release added controls for selecting upstream models and configuring fallback behavior in AI Proxy Advanced:

prioritybalancer algorithm: assigns priority groups to upstream models.failover_criteria: configures when a failure should trigger an attempt with the next upstream.- Catch-all target: provides a fallback target for semantic routing.
These settings give operators more ways to express routing and failure-handling policies. They do not, by themselves, establish a particular improvement in speed, reliability, or cost; Kong’s release notes do not provide comparative benchmarks for these features. When evaluating a routing setup, consider supported providers and models, the routing criteria available, the behavior on failures, and the operational complexity of maintaining the configuration.

Review the Gateway 3.10 changelog and breaking changes, then check your license, plugin configuration, migration plan, and logging consumers before upgrading.
