“Lightweight” does not mean one-size-fits-all. Bottle, CherryPy, Falcon, FastAPI, Flask, Pyramid, Sanic and Tornado suit different needs: API endpoints, HTML applications, flexible foundations or asynchronous networking. The eight-framework roundup behind this list was published by InfoWorld on October 28, 2020, so treat it as a guide to framework styles—not a current ranking or compatibility chart.

What “lightweight” means when choosing a framework

A small framework can keep the core focused, but it may leave you to choose separate tools for templates, forms, persistence or other application features. The useful comparison is not simply which framework is smallest. Ask what you are building and how much structure you want the framework to supply.

  • API or HTML application: API-focused frameworks may not provide the pieces needed for a conventional server-rendered website.
  • Built-in features or extensions: A lean core can mean selecting libraries for templates, forms, database access or validation.
  • Synchronous or asynchronous networking: Async-oriented tools may be a better fit when the workload involves many concurrent or long-lived connections.
  • Framework policy: Some frameworks make more choices for you; others leave architecture and component selection largely to the application.

The original InfoWorld survey, “8 great little Python web frameworks”, is useful for understanding these distinctions, but its version and Python-compatibility details date to 2020.

Eight Python frameworks and the work they suit

Bottle: a compact starting point

Bottle is aimed at small applications and REST APIs. Its current stable documentation identifies Bottle 0.13.4 and describes routing, templates, HTTP utilities and a built-in development server. Bottle has no hard dependencies beyond Python’s standard library, according to its stable documentation. The 2020 roundup also describes request and response objects, cookies, form data and uploads; it notes that advanced form validation and CSRF protection require additional support. Check the current documentation and the libraries you plan to use before treating that older feature description as a complete account.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

CherryPy: a low-level, unobtrusive base

InfoWorld presented CherryPy as a framework that lets an application retain the feel of ordinary Python code rather than imposing a large application structure. Its 2020 account says it includes sessions and cookies but not HTML templating, and describes some capabilities, such as WebSockets, as areas where third-party libraries may be needed. Those detailed feature notes are from the 2020 article, not a current audit of CherryPy’s documentation. It may appeal if you want a comparatively unobtrusive foundation and are comfortable assembling the rest of the stack.

Falcon: focused on APIs

The 2020 roundup positions Falcon as a fit for REST APIs when a small framework surface and little imposed structure are priorities. That focus is less directly suited to a conventional HTML interface requiring website-oriented features such as form handling and CSRF protection. Its compatibility details in the article are historical; consult Falcon’s current official documentation before choosing a version or assessing Python support.

FastAPI: typed API endpoints

InfoWorld’s 2020 description highlights decorator-based endpoints, Python type hints for input constraints and validation, and automatic JSON responses when an endpoint returns a dictionary. It describes Starlette as the networking foundation. The same article notes that HTML templating and database connectivity come from other solutions. These are the article’s account of FastAPI at that time, not a full current feature audit; verify current behavior and dependencies in the project’s official documentation.

Flask: lean by default, able to grow

Flask is a lightweight WSGI framework designed for a quick start, while also being able to scale to complex applications, according to its current documentation. That documentation lists Werkzeug, Jinja and Click as dependencies. The 2020 roundup emphasizes Flask’s lean-by-default approach, Jinja templating and extensions for needs such as caching, forms and database connectivity. Consider Flask when you want a small core and are comfortable choosing extensions as the application’s requirements become clear.

Pyramid: flexibility as an architectural choice

Pyramid’s current stable documentation identifies version 2.1 and describes it as a small, fast Python framework in the Pylons Project. The 2020 article emphasizes its “free of policy” approach: the developer chooses database and template solutions rather than being directed toward one prescribed set. That flexibility can suit projects that need to grow without committing early to a particular collection of components. Its Python 2 and asynchronous-support notes in the older article should not be used as present-day guidance. See the current Pyramid documentation for current project details.

Sanic: an async/await-oriented option

InfoWorld describes Sanic as oriented around Python’s async/await style, with route blueprints and support for WebSockets and other protocols. The article also says templating and database connectivity are left to other tools. The available material does not establish Sanic’s current release or support status, so check its official project documentation and release information before relying on those historical details.

Tornado: asynchronous networking and long-lived connections

The 2020 article points to Tornado for use cases such as long-lived connections, WebSockets, long polling, and scrapers or bots that make parallel requests. It describes HTTP client and server features alongside lower-level networking facilities. That makes Tornado particularly relevant when networking behavior is central to the application, rather than simply because it is a small web framework. Its version and Python compatibility claims in the roundup are historical; confirm current support against Tornado’s official documentation.

Match the framework to your application

What matters most Frameworks to investigate Why they may fit
A compact framework with current documented minimal dependencies Bottle Its stable documentation identifies version 0.13.4 and no hard dependencies beyond the Python standard library.
A focused REST API with little framework-imposed structure Falcon; FastAPI Falcon is presented as a small-surface API framework; FastAPI’s 2020 description emphasizes typed endpoint inputs and JSON responses.
A lean start with room to add application features Flask Current Flask documentation describes a lightweight WSGI framework that can scale to complex applications.
A flexible base where you select key components Pyramid; CherryPy Pyramid is described as free of policy; CherryPy as unobtrusive. The CherryPy feature details here come from the 2020 article.
Asynchronous networking or long-lived connections Tornado; Sanic Tornado is associated with long-lived connections and networking tools; Sanic is described as async/await-oriented. Verify current project support.
Small project or API where compactness is a priority Bottle The 2020 roundup presents it as exceptionally compact; its current documentation confirms a minimal hard-dependency footprint.

These are investigation starting points, not a ranking. An API framework can still be used as part of a larger HTML application, but the extra work of supplying website features should be included in the decision. Likewise, async support matters most when the application’s workload benefits from it; it is not, by itself, a measure of framework quality.

What to verify before starting a project

The available current documentation establishes specific details for Bottle, Flask and Pyramid, but does not establish a comparable 2026 release-activity or support-policy assessment for all eight projects. Before committing, check each candidate’s official release notes, supported Python versions and maintenance policy. Then confirm that the framework and its likely extensions cover the features your application actually needs.

  • For an HTML site, verify how you will handle templates, forms and CSRF protection.
  • For an API, check request validation, serialization and the structure you want for endpoints.
  • For persistence, identify the database library or integration you expect to use.
  • For concurrent or long-lived connections, verify the framework’s current async and protocol support.
  • For a lean core, account for the maintenance and integration work involved in choosing separate components.
