The available evidence does not establish each pundit’s personal motive. Their record is mixed: a pre-season champion pick is a difficult, single-outcome forecast, and results vary by season and by how accuracy is scored.
Why pundits make title predictions
BBC Sport’s pre-season format asks pundits to predict the top four, then revisits those selections after the campaign. The exercise is broader than choosing a champion: it also forecasts which clubs might qualify for European football. That makes a prediction a concrete, debatable preview and gives the publisher a result to compare with the season’s outcome.
That is an inference from the format, not a documented explanation from the pundits themselves. The available material does not include direct statements about why individual pundits participate or establish the publisher’s audience or commercial objectives. It therefore cannot support claims that pundits deliberately choose sensational clubs, promote betting, or trade accuracy for attention.
How reliable are pre-season title predictions?
There is no single reliability score that covers every season, pundit, or type of forecast. A champion pick is a high-uncertainty call: even a strong favourite can fail to win, and a forecast can miss the champion while still identifying several likely top-four teams. BBC Sport’s season reviews show both consensus successes and striking misses.

Three BBC Sport season reviews
| Season reviewed | Champion picks and results | What the comparison shows |
|---|---|---|
| 2020–21 and 2021–22, reviewed in 2022 | For 2021–22, 13 of 20 BBC pundits picked Manchester City, the eventual champion. None had selected Liverpool, the actual 2020–21 champion, before that season. For 2021–22, only two pundits placed the top three in the correct order, and none named all four top-four clubs. | A strong consensus favourite can make the champion easier to call in one season; that does not mean pundits will identify the previous season’s surprise champion, or reproduce the exact standings. BBC Sport’s 2022 review. |
| 2024–25, reviewed 26 May 2025 | None of 30 BBC pundits picked Liverpool to win; Stephen Warnock and Fara Williams came closest by placing Liverpool second. Opta’s pre-season model gave Manchester City an 82.2% title chance and ranked Liverpool third. Opta selected all four actual top-four clubs, with two in the correct positions. | The 82.2% was Opta’s probability for that particular pre-season forecast, not a general accuracy rate. A probability is not a guarantee: Liverpool won. BBC Sport’s 2025 review. |
| 2025–26, reviewed 25 May 2026 | Of 33 BBC pundits, 21 picked Liverpool as champion, but Arsenal won; six had selected Arsenal. No pundit correctly named more than two of the actual top-four clubs. Opta favoured Liverpool at 28.5%, a BBC reader poll also selected Liverpool, and the BBC’s AI table forecast selected Manchester City. | The predictions were based on squads as they stood on 14 August, before the transfer window closed. Opta’s 28.5% was its probability in that pre-season forecast, not a general measure of model reliability. This one-season comparison does not establish that pundits, readers, or models systematically outperform one another. BBC Sport’s 2026 review. |
These are examples from one publisher’s exercises, not a comprehensive audit of every outlet or pundit. They do not provide a multi-year accuracy score for each named pundit or a series showing how well named pundits’ probabilities are calibrated.
What other evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Match forecasts are not season-title forecasts
A peer-reviewed study by David Butler, Robert Butler, and John Eakins examined forecasts of Premier League match outcomes across three seasons. The University College Cork record reports that former professional players forecast better than laypeople, that results partly support the possibility of greater crowd precision, and that pundits generated positive returns in the study’s betting framework while the crowd and laypeople generated losses. - PREMIER LEAGUE REPLICA, IDEAL FOR TRAINING: Perfect ball for regular training sessions, designed as an official Premier League replica for authentic style and reliable performance.
- MACHINE-STITCHED BUILD: Reinforced stitching holds its shape and stays ready for the next session.
- 16-PANEL DESIGN: Symmetrical panel layout delivers a steady, predictable flight for accurate play.
- RESPONSIVE REBOUND: TPU outer surface delivers a smooth, comfortable touch, while EVA foam provides a firm feel and excellent rebound for accurate passes and dynamic play.
- STABILITY AND AIR RETENTION: Rubber bladder delivers stability, while the PAL (PUMA Air Lock) valve ensures excellent air retention for consistent performance.
This is evidence about match-level forecasts under a particular betting-market setup, not about picking the season champion. A positive betting return is not the same measure as a high raw hit rate, and neither result establishes that an individual pundit reliably predicts the title. The accessible university record does not state enough detail to report the study’s sample size, odds, return magnitude, or full scoring method.
Early standings provide clues, not certainty
A Premier League historical analysis by Alex Keble, published 5 November 2025, examines 26 full seasons from 1999–2000 through 2024–25. In that set, 12 of 26 leaders after ten matchweeks later won the title (46%); 21 of 26 eventual champions were already in the top three at that point (81%). Champions also came from second place four times, third five times, fourth once, fifth twice, and sixth twice. The Premier League’s analysis of the table after 100 matches.

Those historical rates describe where champions stood after ten matchweeks; they are not an audit of pundit predictions. They help explain why early results can inform an in-season forecast while leaving room for the table to change.

Before comparing pundits, models, or polls, check that they attempted the same task at roughly the same time and were evaluated by the same rule. A correct champion pick, a correct top-four list, and an accurately ordered table are different achievements. Match outcomes are a different target again.

- Timing: Was it made before the season, before the transfer window closed, at a mid-season checkpoint, or immediately before a match?
- Scoring: Does the review count exact hits, reward near misses, measure rank error, assess probability calibration, or calculate betting returns? These methods answer different questions.
- Sample: How many pundits or models, and how many seasons or matches, are included?
- Baseline: Is there a favourite, market, or crowd comparison using the same target, timing, and scoring rule?
Without those details, a claim that one group is “more reliable” may simply compare unlike forecasts or unlike definitions of success.
