Two Windows vulnerabilities in that release were reported as actively exploited: CVE-2026-81963 in the Windows Update Stack and CVE-2026-85880 in Windows ALPC. Both are elevation-of-privilege flaws, meaning the reported risk is local privilege escalation—not, by itself, an unauthenticated remote attack.
What are the Windows zero-days in Patch Tuesday?
The two reported exploited vulnerabilities affect separate Windows components. Microsoft’s Security Update Guide is the authoritative place to check each advisory, including affected products, severity, and remediation.

Does “actively exploited” mean attackers can hack Windows remotely?
Not on the information reported here. Both flaws are classified as elevation-of-privilege vulnerabilities: exploitation involves a local attacker escalating privileges on a system, rather than either flaw alone providing an unauthenticated internet-facing entry point. That distinction does not make an applicable flaw harmless; it describes the type of access the vulnerability is reported to provide.

Should I install the latest Windows security update?
Check whether the September 2026 security update applies to your Windows version, then install it using your normal supported update route. The Security Update Guide identifies Microsoft’s vulnerability and update information; use it to verify the affected product and remediation rather than relying on a third-party download.
- Identify the Windows edition and version on the device.
- Search Microsoft’s Security Update Guide for each CVE and confirm whether the product and update apply.
- Install the relevant security update through Windows Update or your organization’s managed deployment channel.
- Confirm that installation completed successfully using the update history or your organization’s update-management tools.
Administrators should follow their usual staged testing and deployment controls while prioritizing fixes that apply to their environment.

Why are reports giving different vulnerability totals?
September 2026 coverage gives conflicting totals: Malwarebytes reports 964 vulnerabilities, while SecurityWeek reports 974. Without a confirmed Microsoft release total resolving the difference, neither figure should be treated as authoritative. The consistent, actionable point in both reports is that two exploited Windows vulnerabilities were included.
