Securing generative AI starts with familiar software and data protections, but it also requires assessing how models are assembled, what data flows through them, and how their probabilistic outputs behave. NIST’s Generative AI Profile offers a practical lifecycle framework for organizing that work.

Why generative AI needs a broader security assessment

Generative AI systems produce content and may rely on one model or several. Some handle text only; others accept or create modalities such as speech and images. They can run in a cloud environment, be self-hosted, or be accessed through a third-party service. Each choice affects the system’s components, data paths, and the organization’s ability to evaluate behavior.

Traditional security challenges still apply, including software vulnerabilities, insecure dependencies, and protection of sensitive data. Matt Honea, identified by SecurityWeek as CISO at Hippocratic AI, put the distinction this way: “While there are similar security challenges that parallel traditional security, we also have to understand that this new complex system requires new ways to approach security.” SecurityWeek, October 30, 2024

Map the system and its data pathways

Before testing controls, establish what is actually being deployed. A useful inventory covers the model or models, connected services, interfaces, inputs, outputs, and the people or systems that use the results. A model used only to draft internal text has a different exposure from one that accepts images, processes speech, or generates code for downstream use.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Identify the deployment model. Record whether the system is cloud-hosted, self-hosted, or provided as a third-party service, and identify who operates each component.
  • Trace data processing. Determine what information enters prompts or other inputs, where processing occurs, and whether a third party processes data in another country.
  • Assess the supply chain. Review components and dependencies, and apply appropriate static analysis to software under your control.
  • Protect data. Evaluate access, handling, and exposure across the full path from input through processing, storage, and output.
  • Document configuration and modalities. Capture model and service versions, connected tools, enabled capabilities, and the kinds of input and output the deployment supports.

Cloud or third-party operation can mean less direct control over processing and configuration, so the organization must understand the provider’s role and data handling. Self-hosting may give the organization more direct control over where processing occurs, but it still leaves the organization responsible for the model supply chain, configuration, and security assessment. The available options are not a guarantee of safety; assess the actual deployment rather than assuming one architecture is secure by default.

Plan for probabilistic behavior and harder-to-repeat tests

Generative systems can produce different results in response to similar requests, which complicates repeatable assessment. Inputs may include more than text, and outputs may involve hallucinations, memory, logic, or generated code. These characteristics affect what needs testing; they do not, by themselves, establish a particular level of risk.

Build an evaluation plan around the system’s real use and exposure. Include representative and adverse inputs for every enabled modality, assess outputs for the ways they could affect users or downstream systems, and record the configuration and conditions for each test. Because results may vary, evaluate patterns across relevant test cases rather than relying on a single successful response. Where generated code or other content is passed to another system, test that handoff and its controls too.

Use NIST’s AI risk lifecycle to organize controls

NIST AI 600-1, the Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework: Generative Artificial Intelligence Profile, was published in July 2024 as a cross-sectoral companion to the AI Risk Management Framework. It suggests actions to govern, map, measure, and manage risks across the AI lifecycle. NIST says the profile was primarily shaped around governance, content provenance, pre-deployment testing, and incident disclosure. Read NIST AI 600-1.

  1. Govern: Assign ownership for AI risk decisions, establish review and escalation responsibilities, and define how the organization will handle incidents and disclosures.
  2. Map: Describe the system, its intended use, users, data flows, deployment context, and potential impacts. Include the model and modality configuration, external services, and downstream dependencies.
  3. Measure: Define evaluation methods that fit the use case. Test relevant inputs and outputs before deployment, document limitations and results, and account for variability rather than treating one response as conclusive.
  4. Manage: Use assessment findings to decide whether to deploy, restrict, monitor, or change the system. Maintain a process for responding to incidents and revisiting controls when the system or its context changes.

These are lifecycle functions, not a one-time checklist. Tailor them to the system’s characteristics and use context; the profile is cross-sectoral guidance rather than a claim that one set of controls fits every deployment.
