There is no single visual clue or detector that can prove an image is authentic, edited, or AI-generated. For the strongest assessment, start with the original file, inspect any signed Content Credentials, check a watermark verifier that covers the likely provider, and look for earlier versions and independent corroboration. Treat a missing credential or a clean-looking image as inconclusive—not proof that the picture is real.
What an image check can—and cannot—tell you
Different checks answer different questions. A provenance record may describe how a file was created or edited; a watermark checker may detect a signal from a particular provider; a visual detector may estimate whether image patterns resemble synthetic media; and reverse-image search may reveal earlier copies. None alone establishes that the depicted event happened as claimed.
Content Credentials are signed provenance information, not a truth meter. They can record origin, edits, and AI use, and cryptographic validation can show whether the signed asset or credential has been altered. But credentials are optional, may not contain a complete history, and do not certify that the scene or the creator’s claims are true. The Content Authenticity Initiative explains that credentials provide origin and history information but are not intended to judge whether content is “real” (How Content Credentials work). The C2PA specification likewise distinguishes checking whether provenance information is well-formed and untampered from judging whether it is true (C2PA Specification 2.2 Explainer).

Find the best available file
Ask the photographer, publisher, or person who shared it for the original file. A screenshot, social-media download, crop, or converted copy may have lost metadata or altered signals. Keep an untouched copy for inspection; use a separate copy if you need to crop or annotate it.

Inspect its Content Credentials
Open the file in a C2PA-aware viewer or validator. Check whether a credential is present, whether its signature validates, who signed it, and what creation or editing actions it records. Consider whether the signer is a source you trust. A valid signature supports the integrity of the recorded assertion; it does not establish that the assertion is truthful or that every earlier edit was recorded. The C2PA explainer describes the standard’s provenance model and its limits (C2PA Specification 2.2 Explainer).
-
Check for a provider-specific watermark
If the likely source is known, use a verifier that explicitly covers it. Google says Gemini image verification checks for SynthID signals to assess whether an image was made or edited by Google AI; feature coverage and availability can change during rollout, so check the live product’s scope (Google’s Gemini image verification announcement). OpenAI’s Verify checks uploaded image or audio files for supported OpenAI provenance signals, including C2PA metadata and SynthID. A positive result is evidence of a supported signal, not a verdict on the image’s later use or the truth of its caption. A result that finds nothing does not rule out generation by OpenAI or another provider. See OpenAI’s Verify guidance for its scope and upload handling.

Search for earlier versions and independent confirmation
Use reverse-image search or visual search to find earlier publications, uncropped versions, captions, and other copies. Establish where the image first appeared, then check whether reliable reporting or independent records support its claimed date, location, author, and event. An image’s file history and the history of the claim attached to it are related, but not interchangeable.
-
Use visual anomalies only as leads
Inconsistent reflections, shadows, text, edges, hands, or perspective can justify closer investigation. They are not proof: compression, resizing, retouching, and ordinary image processing can also create odd-looking details. Automated detectors can make mistakes, and their results depend on the tool, image type, and changing generation or editing methods. NIST discusses both active provenance approaches and challenges in passive synthetic-image detection in AI 100-4, Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content. For identity-proofing use, NIST says algorithmic analysis and automated decisions should be augmented with manual review to address detection errors; that standard is not a guarantee for consumer detector apps (NIST SP 800-63A).

How to interpret the result
| Evidence found | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| A valid Content Credential | The recorded provenance assertions are cryptographically intact and associated with the credential’s signer. | That the depicted event is real, the assertions are true, or the recorded history is complete. |
| A provider verifier detects a supported watermark or signal | The file contains a signal recognized by that verifier, which may indicate a supported provider origin. | That the verifier covers every generator, or that the image’s caption and context are accurate. |
| A detector flags the image or visual details look unusual | There is a reason to investigate further. | That the image was generated or manipulated; ordinary processing can produce anomalies and detectors can err. |
| No credential or supported signal is found | The check found no evidence within its coverage and the file submitted. | That the image is authentic or was not generated or edited. Metadata can be removed, and watermarks may be degraded or unsupported. |
OpenAI states that when its checker finds no signal, “it means the tool did not find supported signals in the uploaded file” (OpenAI Verify guidance). The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Research Integrity similarly cautions that the absence of a credential or watermark does not prove authenticity (HHS Office of Research Integrity: Content Provenance).
Choose a method that fits the question
- For a record of creation or edits: inspect Content Credentials. They are an opt-in provenance system, so many images have none.
- For a suspected Google AI image: use Gemini’s SynthID verification if available for your account and region. Google’s announcements describe provider-specific coverage, not universal detection (Gemini image verification; SynthID overview).
- For a suspected OpenAI image: OpenAI Verify checks supported OpenAI signals. OpenAI says uploads are processed for the check, not stored unless legally required, and not used to train its models; consult its current guidance before uploading sensitive material (OpenAI Verify guidance).
- For a picture circulating online: reverse-image search and independent reporting can help establish publication history and context, though neither is a forensic verdict.
- For an automated detector: check what it analyzes, which creators or services it covers, whether it needs the original, how compression or cropping affects it, whether it gives reviewable evidence, and how it handles uploads.
Watermarks and Content Credentials are different mechanisms. Credentials attach signed provenance metadata; SynthID embeds a signal in image pixels and requires a compatible verification system. A tool that checks one mechanism may not check the other. Google reported in November 2025 that SynthID had watermarked more than 20 billion AI-generated pieces of content since its 2023 introduction; that figure covers content across media, not images alone (Google’s November 20, 2025 announcement). It is a deployment count, not an accuracy measure.

Report what the evidence actually shows
Describe the check and its scope instead of labeling the image simply “real” or “fake.” For example: “The file contains a valid credential asserting that it was edited in [software]” or “This checker detected a supported watermark.” If a tool finds nothing, say that it found no supported signal in the file submitted and name the tool. Then distinguish that result from what remains unknown about the image’s origin, edits, and context.
