For a New Zealand day hike, pack a hooded waterproof jacket, warm layers, suitable footwear, sun protection, food, water, navigation and basic emergency gear—even if the weather looks settled at the start. Keep spare clothing dry and accessible, check the forecast and track conditions for your actual route, and be prepared to change or abandon your plan. This checklist is a baseline for walks under eight hours, not an overnight or technical alpine packing list.
Day-hike packing checklist
Adjust this baseline to the route’s length, terrain, exposure and forecast. A short formed walk, a long exposed hike and a winter alpine route have different demands.
Clothing and weather protection
- Base layer: Wear or pack a wool or polypropylene top; add leggings when conditions warrant. Choose quick-drying shorts or trousers.
- Insulation: Take a long-sleeved wool or polar-fleece layer. Wear it or keep it available according to the temperature and your effort.
- Outer layer: Carry a hooded wind- and waterproof jacket where you can reach it quickly. Consider waterproof overtrousers for prolonged wet, windy or exposed conditions.
- Warmth and sun protection: Pack a warm hat and gloves, plus a sun hat and sunglasses. Carry wool or polypropylene socks.
- Footwear: Choose sturdy footwear with comfortable tread and grip suited to the track and conditions; hiking boots with ankle support are one option.
In wet conditions, avoid relying on cotton or denim for insulation: NZ Mountain Safety Council (NZMSC) says they draw heat from the body when wet, while wool, fleece and polypropylene retain warmth. Down insulation also loses insulating properties when wet. See NZMSC’s clothing and equipment guidance.
Pack, food, water and essentials
- Keep clothing dry: Use a day pack with a waterproof liner or dry bags. Put spare layers in a dry place near the top, with your rain jacket easy to reach.
- Water and food: DOC’s day-hike checklist suggests a 1–2 litre drink bottle. That is a general checklist suggestion, not a guarantee of enough water for every route: account for heat, exertion, duration and whether water is available. Pack lunch and snacks, with extra high-energy food in case of delay.
- Navigation and communication: Carry a map and a fully charged mobile phone. Mobile coverage is not guaranteed everywhere; consider backup communication appropriate to the route.
- Emergency and personal items: Pack a basic first-aid kit, personal medication, sunscreen, insect repellent, an emergency torch or head torch with spare batteries, a survival blanket, a whistle, a rubbish bag and toilet paper.
DOC’s day-hike checklist covers walks under eight hours. The right amount of food, water and spare clothing still depends on your trip.

How to use layers when the weather changes
Think in three functional layers: a moisture-managing base, an insulating mid layer and a windproof, waterproof shell. Wool and synthetic fabrics are suitable examples. Add insulation before you become chilled when stopping, and put on rain protection before your inner layers get soaked. Keep these pieces dry and within reach rather than buried in the pack.
NZMSC’s advice is direct: “Always take a rain jacket and warm clothes, even on a short walk, and a little extra food on an overnight trip.” Its hiking guidance explains how to prepare for changing conditions.

How do I prepare for changing weather conditions on a hike or tramp?
- Check the right forecast. Look up forecasts, watches and warnings for the actual mountain or rural destination, not just a nearby town. Recheck close to departure. NZMSC’s weather guidance explains why local conditions matter.
- Check track information and your group’s readiness. Choose a route within the group’s ability, check local track status, and leave enough daylight to complete it.
- Tell someone your plan. Share where you are going and when you expect to return.
- Watch conditions as you go. Rain can raise river levels and make tracks slippery; wind can be especially hazardous on exposed ridges. Keep observing the weather and have a Plan B.
- Change course when needed. Shorten the trip, turn back or postpone if conditions are unsuitable. DOC’s spring walking advice dated 30 September 2026 also recommends changing or postponing plans when the weather is unsuitable, and checking gear before setting off after a long break.
When a day-hike list is not enough
| Trip or conditions | What changes |
|---|---|
| Short formed walk | Use the day-hike baseline, including warm clothing and rain protection; still check conditions and carry essentials. |
| Long or exposed day hike | Allow for longer exposure and delays. The forecast and route may make extra insulation, waterproof overtrousers or emergency shelter appropriate. |
| Overnight or multi-day tramp | Plan separately for sleeping, cooking and dry clothing, and take extra food for an overnight delay. |
| Snow, ice or technical alpine route | A standard day-hike kit does not make this safe. These routes require suitable skills, route-specific forecasts and technical equipment. |
For example, DOC’s Taranaki Maunga summit guidance says winter conditions require mountaineering experience and equipment. Depending on conditions, that includes crampons, an ice axe and helmet, and avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel where appropriate; these are not ordinary day-hike items.

This estimate applies to Taranaki, not to New Zealand mountains generally.
