If your tailgate internet crawls, first work out whether the slowdown is on the phone’s cellular connection or on the local Wi-Fi link. A busy stadium can congest the carrier network even when your phone shows a signal; a crowded or weak hotspot can also slow nearby devices. Pause bandwidth-heavy activity, check the connection and plan, then choose a fix that addresses the link that is actually struggling.

Tell whether cellular service or Wi-Fi is the problem

A phone hotspot has two links: the phone’s cellular connection to the carrier and the Wi-Fi connection between the phone and the devices using it. Venue Wi-Fi has a local wireless link too, but does not necessarily use your phone’s hotspot. These links can fail for different reasons, so a single slow-loading page does not identify the cause.

  • Several devices on your phone hotspot are slow: Cellular congestion or a plan limit is a likely cause. Local Wi-Fi contention is also possible, so treat this as a clue rather than proof.
  • A device works better close to the hotspot: The local Wi-Fi signal may be weak or obstructed. Move nearer and test again.
  • The phone’s cellular data works well, but connected devices do not: Hotspot settings, local interference, or Wi-Fi signal strength may be involved.
  • Only a particular app or activity is slow: Pause streaming, downloads, or updates and see whether essential tasks improve.

Verizon identifies sporting events as places where high traffic can slow cellular service. It also notes that congestion can vary between cell sites and over time: Verizon’s wireless troubleshooting guidance.

If the carrier network is congested

When many people are using the same cellular site, changing the hotspot’s Wi-Fi band or adding a router cannot create more capacity on that carrier connection. Address demand first, then consider whether your plan’s hotspot rules apply.

Reduce what is using data

  • Pause video streaming, large downloads, cloud backups, and app or system updates.
  • Ask other users to stop bandwidth-heavy activity while you need tickets, messages, or other time-sensitive access.
  • Disconnect devices that do not need internet access. This reduces local hotspot demand, though it does not increase carrier capacity.

T-Mobile notes that congestion can especially affect streaming and file downloads, and that tethering speeds may be affected by plan-specific prioritization rules. Check the terms for your own plan; thresholds and conditions are not universal across plans or carriers: T-Mobile’s internet service policies.

Wait or move only when it is safe and practical

A brief pause may help if demand eases. If permitted, moving to a less crowded spot may also connect the phone to a less congested cell site. Verizon describes congestion as varying by tower and minute; improvement is not guaranteed. Stay within event rules and do not move somewhere unsafe just to chase a signal.

Do not buy equipment expecting it to fix carrier congestion

A dedicated hotspot still depends on cellular service at the event, and a local router or different Wi-Fi band addresses only the local wireless link. A separate hotspot may make sense for recurring multi-device use, but it is not a reliable workaround for a saturated carrier site. Before choosing one, compare coverage at the venue, the device’s plan and hotspot allowance, the devices you need to connect, battery needs, and total device and service cost.

If the hotspot’s local Wi-Fi is weak or crowded

Try these steps when the phone has cellular service but nearby devices have trouble connecting or staying connected. Menu names and available controls vary by phone model and region.

  1. Reduce connected-device activity. Disconnect devices that do not need access and pause background streaming, downloads, and updates. Motorola’s compatible phones may provide a device limit or a way to disconnect users.
  2. Move the client device closer. Keep the phone and connected device clear of obstructions. A stronger local signal may help a device that struggles at a distance, but it will not resolve a weak carrier connection.
  3. Consider the hotspot band if your phone supports it. Motorola’s guidance says 5 GHz may reduce interference, while 2 GHz may offer stronger signal. The setting and behavior depend on phone model and country; do not assume another brand uses the same menu or tradeoff.
  4. Restart equipment only if you control it. Restarting a personal or venue router can help with some local Wi-Fi problems. It will not clear congestion on the carrier network.

For a managed access point, channel competition and airtime use can matter. Ubiquiti’s guidance on Wi-Fi airtime utilization is aimed at configured access-point networks; it is not a setting available on every phone hotspot.

Choose Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth tethering

Changing tethering method can bypass a crowded local Wi-Fi link for a compatible device, but each method still shares the phone’s cellular connection and plan.

Method When it may help Trade-off
Wi-Fi hotspot Several nearby devices need wireless access. Local interference, distance, connected-device activity, and phone battery use can affect the experience.
USB tethering One compatible device can connect directly to the phone with a suitable data cable. Less convenient for movement; device, cable, and carrier-plan support matter. It still uses cellular data.
Bluetooth tethering A nearby compatible device needs a wireless alternative in a busy Wi-Fi environment. Range is limited, and actual performance depends on both devices and the plan.

Motorola describes USB tethering as potentially more stable, speedy, and secure than wireless sharing in some situations. It describes Bluetooth tethering as less affected by crowded Wi-Fi and lower in power use than Wi-Fi hotspot mode. Those are not guaranteed speed results for every device. See Motorola’s hotspot and tethering guidance for supported-device instructions.

Keep the phone powered and secure

Wi-Fi hotspot use drains the phone battery. Motorola recommends plugging the phone in while using hotspot mode. If no outlet is available, a USB-C power bank may help keep a compatible phone charged; check connector and charging compatibility. Neither a power bank nor a tethering cable relieves carrier-side congestion.

Protect the hotspot with a password, and share it only with people who need access. Fewer unnecessary connections also reduce local demand.

Check for official stadium Wi-Fi

Look up the specific stadium or event’s official fan guide before you arrive. For example, Empower Field at Mile High’s A–Z guide lists game-day access instructions for BroncosWiFi and VerizonWiFiAccess. That is an example for that venue, not evidence that other stadiums offer Wi-Fi or use the same login process.

Use automatic Wi-Fi-to-cellular switching only with the right expectations

On supported Apple devices, Connectivity Assist can use cellular data when Wi-Fi is slow or unusable, including at sports venues. Apple’s Support page, published September 16, 2026, describes the feature in current iOS and iPadOS settings: Apple’s Connectivity Assist guidance. The feature may use more cellular data, and it cannot help if cellular service is congested too.

Quick plan for game day

  1. Check whether the problem affects the phone itself, every hotspot client, or only a distant device.
  2. Pause streaming, downloads, and updates; disconnect devices that do not need access.
  3. If the local Wi-Fi link seems weak, move closer and, on a supported phone, consider its available hotspot-band settings.
  4. If cellular service appears congested, wait or move only if safe and permitted, and check your plan’s hotspot rules.
  5. For one compatible device, try USB or Bluetooth tethering if the local Wi-Fi link is the issue.
  6. Check the venue’s official guide for its own Wi-Fi instructions, and keep the phone charged.
