Choose an AI coding assistant subscription by matching its workflow to the way you code, then comparing how it meters usage, handles overages, and supports your privacy and team needs. A monthly price alone will not tell you which plan is the best value: inline completions, long agent sessions, and cloud-based code review can consume very different allowances.
The plan prices and limits below are vendor-posted figures checked October 4, 2026, in USD unless noted otherwise. They can change, and availability or features may vary by location, billing cadence, rollout, and account eligibility.
Start with where and how you want the assistant to work
First decide whether you want help inside an existing editor, an agent that can make changes across files, a terminal workflow, or a cloud service that works with repositories. The right choice depends on where your code and review process already live—not on a universal ranking.
- Inline completion: Suggestions appear as you write. If this is your main need, check whether completions are counted separately from chat and agent usage.
- Editor-integrated agent: The assistant can help explore a codebase or make multi-file changes within an editor. Confirm which editor integrations and repository context the plan supports.
- Terminal or cloud work: If you want to work from a command line, ask an agent to operate on a repository, or use code review integrations, check where that work runs and which subscription or allowance pays for it.
As of the check date, GitHub Copilot describes completions and chat across coding environments and GitHub; Cursor centers on its editor and agent workflow; and OpenAI lists Codex access through web, CLI, IDE extension, and iOS on ChatGPT Plus. Anthropic includes Claude Code with paid Claude plans. These descriptions are not a guarantee that every integration is available to every account.

Compare the plans by their actual usage meters
The services do not measure usage the same way. Credits, shared session limits, included model usage, and separate API billing are not interchangeable units. Treat the figures below as plan details—not as a promised number of coding tasks.
| Service | Vendor-listed plans and prices | How usage is handled |
| GitHub Copilot | Individual: Pro $10/month with 1,500 monthly AI credits; Pro+ $39/month with 7,000; Max $100/month with 20,000. Organization: Business $19 per granted seat/month with 1,900 credits; Enterprise $39 per seat/month with 3,900. | Organization usage is pooled; credits beyond the pool are billed at $0.01 each. On paid plans, inline completions and next-edit suggestions do not use AI credits. Free includes 2,000 completions per month; chat and agent allowances differ by plan. See GitHub plan documentation and its plan comparison. |
| Claude and Claude Code | Claude Code is included with all paid Claude plans. Enterprise is listed at $20 per seat/month plus usage billed at API rates, billed annually; verify country, team-size, and plan-specific conditions with Anthropic. | Claude Code shares the usage pool with Claude on web, desktop, and mobile. Limits reset on a rolling five-hour session window; paid plans also have weekly limits. Anthropic says there is no fixed message count. When a limit is reached, options include waiting, moving to a higher plan, or using paid usage credits at standard API rates. See Anthropic’s usage-limit guidance. |
| Cursor | Hobby: free; Individual: $20/month; Teams: $40/user/month; Enterprise: custom. | Each plan includes a set amount of model usage; continued on-demand use after that amount is billed in arrears. Team features listed include centralized billing and administration, shared team context, privacy mode, and SAML/OIDC SSO. See Cursor pricing. |
| OpenAI Codex through ChatGPT | Free: $0/month; Go: $8/month; Plus: $20/month; Pro: from $100/month, with listed $100, $200, and $500 tiers; Business: $20/user/month billed annually for at least two users, or $25/user/month billed monthly. | Codex is included with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise. Plus lists Codex on web, CLI, IDE extension, and iOS. API-key access is separately metered and does not include listed cloud features such as GitHub code review and Slack integrations. Consumption depends on model, task size, complexity, and execution mode. See ChatGPT pricing. |
These are vendor-posted figures, not an independent cost-per-task comparison. For example, Copilot credits cannot be directly compared with Claude’s shared limits or Cursor’s included usage. OpenAI also distinguishes subscription usage from API-key token charges.

Estimate usage from the work you actually do
Before upgrading, identify the tasks you expect the assistant to handle and find out which ones draw on the same allowance. A stream of inline suggestions is different from a lengthy agent session that explores a repository and edits several files.
- List your common tasks: inline coding, codebase questions, terminal work, multi-file changes, reviews, and cloud-agent sessions.
- Check whether those features share a limit. Claude Code draws from the same pool as Claude on other surfaces; Copilot paid inline suggestions are outside its AI-credit meter, while chat and agents use credits.
- Look at what happens at the limit: a reset or wait, an upgrade, pay-as-you-go use, or another billing route.
- Where a free or entry plan is available, try representative work during a short billing period before committing to a higher tier. Track when you hit limits and whether the assistant fits your process.
This gives you a practical basis for choosing a plan, but it does not produce a universal task count. Anthropic and OpenAI both describe usage as dependent on task characteristics; Cursor offers included usage followed by billed on-demand use.

Work out the cost you can actually control
Compare more than the listed monthly fee. Include the billing cadence, included usage, reset schedule, extra-use charges, and any minimum seat commitment. For team plans, distinguish per-seat pricing from pooled usage: GitHub says organization credits are pooled, while OpenAI Business requires at least two users at the listed annual rate.
Decide in advance whether you are comfortable with extra charges or would rather stop when an allowance runs out. Cursor says on-demand usage after its included model amount is billed in arrears; GitHub lists a price for organization credits beyond the pool. Claude’s paid usage credits use standard API rates. OpenAI API-key usage is separately metered and should not be treated as included subscription usage.

Do not infer that one plan is cheaper for your workload from its price or allowance alone. The sources do not establish an apples-to-apples cost per task, and no plan figure guarantees that a particular workload will fit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For teams, check administration and data controls
When buying for a team, assess account administration and policies alongside model access. Check seat management, identity controls, shared context, usage pooling, and the data terms that apply to the specific plan and jurisdiction. GitHub’s plan comparison distinguishes organization controls and IP indemnity; Cursor lists centralized administration and SAML/OIDC SSO for Teams; OpenAI lists Business controls and says business data is not used for training by default. Confirm current terms directly with the provider before relying on these features or making a privacy decision.

Pay particular attention to plan scope in data policies. GitHub’s Copilot pricing FAQ says interactions from Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ users—including inputs, outputs, code snippets, and associated context—may be used to train and improve models unless users opt out in account settings. That statement applies to the plans it names; it should not be extended to organization plans or other providers. See GitHub’s Copilot FAQ and plan information.
The available plan descriptions do not establish a fully comparable current picture of retention and training policies across all four providers. Review each vendor’s current policy and the terms for the plan you intend to buy rather than assuming the products handle code data alike.
A practical way to choose
- Choose the work surface. Decide whether the priority is inline completion in your current IDE, editor-based agents, terminal work, or repository and cloud integrations.
- Map your tasks to the meter. Check what draws from one shared pool and what is billed or counted separately.
- Set a spending boundary. Compare recurring fees, seat minimums, reset windows, and the behavior after included usage runs out.
- Verify team and privacy requirements. Confirm controls and data terms for the exact plan, location, and account type.
- Start at the lowest suitable tier. Use a free or entry plan where offered, observe how it handles your real tasks, and upgrade only if its limits or features justify the cost. Check cancellation and annual-billing terms with the provider.
Vendor pages describe products and plans, not independently measured coding quality, time saved, or the lowest-cost option for your specific work. Choose on the basis of workflow fit, observed use, and acceptable billing and data terms.
