Evaluate an asteroid-mining company by tracing its proposed resource all the way to a usable product and a real customer. A compelling asteroid, a successful launch, or a promising ground test is only one link in that chain. For every claim, ask what has been measured or demonstrated, at what scale and in what environment, who confirmed it, and what remains a plan.

Can we mine asteroids yet?

Not as an industrial operation. In a NASA explainer transcript dated June 28, 2023, NASA author Emily Furfaro said, “The technologies for mining asteroids are not well developed.” The same explainer said, “We actually can’t really mine asteroids yet,” while noting that people in the private sector and elsewhere are working on it. NASA missions to asteroids are science missions, not mining operations.

NASA’s 2019 Mini Bee concept included prospecting, extraction and delivery, but NASA described it as early-stage. A concept or agency-funded technology project can be valuable evidence of research; it is not evidence that a company has an operating mine. No comparable independently verified commercial asteroid-mining production, throughput or revenue figure is established in the sources available here.

What counts as a mineable resource?

A target’s estimated composition is not the same as an identified resource, a recoverable product or material delivered to a buyer. Each step adds evidence the previous one cannot supply:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Composition estimate: Remote observations suggest what materials may be present. They do not by themselves establish abundance at the extraction site or how deeply a material lies.
  • Characterized resource: Measurements constrain composition and distribution at a particular target. Ask how strong the evidence is and how much of the target it represents.
  • Recoverable product: An extraction and processing system can access, capture and convert some of that material into a defined product, with a measured yield.
  • Delivered product: The product can be stored and transported to a specified destination in usable condition, at a cost and schedule a customer accepts.

For any claimed resource, ask what evidence constrains its abundance, grade, spatial distribution, accessible depth and extraction yield. Then ask how uncertainty in those estimates affects spacecraft mass, power, mission duration, plant size, cost and the amount of saleable product. The USGS’s 2017 feasibility study examined whether terrestrial mineral-resource assessment methods could be adapted for asteroids, but explicitly did not include a complete, robust uncertainty analysis. It is useful context for how assessment might be approached, not a validated reserve estimate for a company’s target.

NASA’s Robotic Asteroid Prospector (RAP) study identified water and platinum-group metals as potentially feasible near-term resource classes. That is a research finding about possible classes of resources, not proof that a particular asteroid contains an economically recoverable deposit.

What technical risks could stop a project?

Finding and reaching the target

A company should identify its target and show why its mission can reach it. Review the target-specific trajectory and launch opportunity, propulsion and delta-v margin, mission duration, navigation and communications plan, and spacecraft power and thermal design. A plan also needs a credible approach and rendezvous strategy. A resource estimate is of limited value if the target is inaccessible on the proposed schedule or the spacecraft cannot operate reliably on arrival.

Working in low gravity

An asteroid’s very low gravity changes the mechanics of contact, anchoring and excavation. A machine that pushes into loose material may push itself away instead. Loose particles can escape, drift into equipment or interfere with collection. NASA’s earlier in-situ resource utilization overview identifies low gravity, anchoring, prospecting, excavation and processing as technology needs. NASA’s Asteroid Soil Strength Evaluation Test project record likewise notes that poor knowledge of surface behavior and regolith strength raises risk for near-Earth asteroid missions.

Ask how the proposed system matches the target’s rotation, contacts or anchors to the surface, controls dust and particles, and avoids losing the spacecraft or material during operations. Look for tests that address the actual operating mode—not just a component functioning on a bench.

Excavating, capturing and processing material

The extraction concept should explain how material is accessed, contained, separated and turned into a specified product. Check for a credible account of anchoring, power demand, thermal management, throughput, contamination, dust, storage, processing losses and performance over the intended operating period. A one-off demonstration on a simulant may test relevant physics or a subsystem, but it cannot establish behavior on a specific asteroid, long-duration reliability or commercial recovery yield.

Optical mining illustrates why scale and setting matter. NASA describes a concept that concentrates sunlight to excavate material and extract volatiles into containment. NASA’s TechPort record, updated December 18, 2025, reports an 8 kW full-scale ground demonstration using high-fidelity asteroid simulant in vacuum, illuminated by a 10 m solar concentrator. That is meaningful terrestrial test evidence for a proposed method; it was not a mining operation on an asteroid.

Closing the delivery loop

Extraction is not the end of the system. A credible architecture must account for product containment, storage, transfer and transport to the intended destination. Ask what condition and quantity of product the customer can use, how losses are measured, and what mission hardware is needed after processing. The NASA RAP work treats mission design, spacecraft, mining technology and business case as interdependent; a company’s engineering case and economic case cannot be assessed separately.

  1. Analysis or model: The company has described or simulated an approach. Check assumptions and whether the model is tied to measurements.
  2. Laboratory unit test: A component has operated under controlled conditions. Note whether it used representative materials and loads.
  3. Integrated ground test: Multiple subsystems operated together on Earth. Record test duration, scale and environmental limits.
  4. Relevant-environment test: The system has been tested in conditions relevant to space or asteroid operations. Specify which conditions were reproduced and which were not.
  5. Flight demonstration: Hardware has flown. Confirm whether the payload actually completed its stated objective; a launch alone proves launch and deployment, not payload success.
  6. Asteroid rendezvous and prospecting: A spacecraft reached a target and returned measurements. Check whether measurements address the claimed resource and extraction location.
  7. Extraction, processing and delivery: Material was recovered, converted into a usable product and delivered to its intended destination. Look for independently confirmed quantities and performance.

NASA’s Mini Bee concept and the later TechPort project record should be read in this way: an early-stage concept and a completed ground-project record are distinct from flight validation or an operational mine. For every claimed step, distinguish company-reported information from agency records, technical reports and independent confirmation.

How to compare asteroid-mining companies

Use the same questions for each company rather than comparing headline valuations, asteroid metal estimates or mission dates in isolation.

Comparison axis What to ask Evidence that matters
Target and resource Which specific target and resource are proposed? How well are abundance, distribution, depth and uncertainty constrained? Target-specific observations and a clear distinction between inferred composition and accessible material.
Mission access Can the spacecraft reach and operate at the target on the stated opportunity and schedule? Target-specific trajectory, propulsion margin, navigation, communications, power and thermal plans.
Subsystem maturity Which critical elements are demonstrated, and which remain designs or models? Completed tests with scale, environment, duration and verifier identified.
Extraction and processing How much material can be recovered, at what yield, and in what product form? Integrated tests and measured throughput or recovery yield under relevant conditions.
Destination and buyer Where will the material go, and who can use it? A defined product, delivery point and customer or credible demand case.
Economics and schedule Does the model include the whole mission and the risk of delay, failure or retry? Costs for launch, spacecraft, operations, extraction, processing losses, storage, transport and customer acquisition.
Transparency Can outsiders distinguish objectives, results and plans? Dated technical disclosures and independent confirmation of claimed milestones.

Is there a real customer and a plausible business case?

Ask who buys the product, where delivery occurs and what form it must take. Water might support propellant, life support or shielding in space, but its value depends on logistics and customer infrastructure at the destination. Metals intended for Earth face terrestrial supply, refining and market-absorption constraints.

Check whether the financial model includes launch, spacecraft, mission operations, failures and retries, extraction hardware, processing losses, storage, transportation and customer acquisition. An asteroid’s estimated metal content multiplied by a spot-market price is not a revenue forecast: it says nothing about recoverable quantity, processing, delivery or whether a market can absorb the output. NASA’s RAP study’s inclusion of a business-case workstream reflects this dependence between engineering and economics.

How to read public mission announcements

Separate a company’s stated objective, schedule and status label from verified outcomes. AstroForge’s mission pages, accessed October 4, 2026, label Odin as launched in 2025 and DeepSpace-2 as a future mission scheduled for 2026. The company says Odin launched on February 26, 2025, to obtain images of asteroid 2022 OB5, and says it is applying lessons from Odin to DeepSpace-2. Those are company-reported claims and plans; they do not, by themselves, confirm that Odin achieved its imaging objective or establish an independent technical postmortem.

AstroForge describes its goal as extracting platinum-group metals and bringing them into Earth’s supply chain. When assessing that ambition, apply the same evidence chain as for any company: target characterization, access, extraction, processing, delivery and a buyer. A stated goal is not a demonstrated capability.

What asteroid missions have demonstrated—and what they have not

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx returned 121.6 grams of material from Bennu. That is a major sample-return achievement and evidence for specific navigation, contact, sampling, containment and return operations. It is not evidence of continuous extraction, industrial throughput or profitable economics. Keep sample-return milestones separate from the much larger task of operating an extraction and delivery system.

The practical test for any company is whether it can connect an adequately characterized resource to a reachable target, a validated extraction and processing system, a delivered product and a buyer—with evidence appropriate to each link. Gaps should be treated as unresolved technical or commercial risks, not filled by extrapolating from a different kind of mission or test.
