The report said BleepingComputer forum users had confirmed the keys were valid, but it did not establish the poster’s real identity or independently verify the claim that files would be decrypted automatically.
What the Locker key release contained
SecurityWeek’s June 1, 2015 report by Eduard Kovacs described Locker as crypto-ransomware and said the release included a CSV file with Bitcoin addresses and RSA keys, plus information about the structure of encrypted files. The article reported a database of more than 62,000 rows. It attributed the claim that most keys had not been used to the alleged developer; it did not say every row represented a victim. SecurityWeek’s report also said several BleepingComputer forum users had confirmed the published keys were valid.
The poster also claimed affected files would be decrypted automatically beginning June 2 at midnight. SecurityWeek reported that statement but did not independently demonstrate that the automatic process occurred. The post included an apology, quoted by SecurityWeek as: “I am the author of the Locker ransomware and I’m very sorry about that has happened. It was never my intention to release this,” signed “Poka BrightMinds.” The signature and authorship claim were not verified by the report.
What the 2015 report said about Locker’s demands
SecurityWeek said Locker demanded 0.1 Bitcoin for a decryption key, with the amount rising to 1 Bitcoin if payment was not made within 72 hours. It also reported that a Trojan downloader received an instruction to install Locker on infected systems on May 25. These are historical details from the 2015 report, not current payment guidance or evidence of a present-day infection campaign.

What recovery options are established today
Locker Unlocker
SecurityWeek identified malware analyst Nathan Scott as the developer of a recovery utility called Locker Unlocker, which it described as a simple tool intended to help victims recover files. The report does not establish whether the utility is available today or whether any download currently circulating is authentic. Do not assume an unverified copy is safe or effective.
No More Ransom catalog
The No More Ransom Project maintains a catalog of decryption tools organized by ransomware family and advises users to remove malware before starting a decryption solution, to avoid further encryption or locking. The catalog does not list a Locker-specific decryptor. That absence means the catalog does not substantiate a current Locker-tool recommendation; it does not prove that no recovery option exists elsewhere. The live catalog can change.

How to approach a suspected Locker-encrypted file
- Do not rely on the 2015 claim of automatic recovery. It was reported as the poster’s claim, not as an independently demonstrated outcome.
- Identify the ransomware family before using a decryptor. Check whether a tool explicitly matches the family and the affected files; a general-purpose utility or a tool for another ransomware family is not evidence of Locker compatibility.
- Use tools only from a source with clear provenance. The historical report names Locker Unlocker, but does not verify a current download. No More Ransom’s catalog offers family-specific listings and advises removing malware before attempting decryption.
