Spotify documents different music-quality options for its Web Player and desktop app, which can make them sound different. The Web Player is fixed at AAC 128 kbit/s on Free and AAC 256 kbit/s on Premium; the desktop app offers selectable settings, including Premium Very high at approximately 320 kbit/s and lossless audio up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. That does not mean the desktop app always sounds better: your plan, selected setting, connection, playback route, and listening setup all matter.
How Spotify Web Player and desktop quality differ
Spotify’s current support documentation lists these music-quality tiers. The figures are Spotify’s stated approximate settings, not independent measurements of the bitrate delivered in a particular session.
| Client and setting | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Web Player | AAC 128 kbit/s | AAC 256 kbit/s |
| Desktop app: Low | Approximately 24 kbit/s | Approximately 24 kbit/s |
| Desktop app: Normal | Approximately 96 kbit/s | Approximately 96 kbit/s |
| Desktop app: High | Approximately 160 kbit/s | Approximately 160 kbit/s |
| Desktop app: Very high | not stated (Spotify’s Audio quality documentation) | Approximately 320 kbit/s |
| Desktop app: Lossless | not stated (Spotify’s Lossless Audio Quality documentation) | Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC |
Source for the stated tiers: Spotify’s Audio quality documentation; lossless availability and requirements: Spotify’s Lossless Audio Quality documentation. The support pages describe available settings; they do not establish the actual delivered bitrate for any particular listener or track.
Why “the Web Player is always lower quality” is too simple
On Free, Spotify’s Web Player figure of AAC 128 kbit/s is higher than the desktop app’s stated High tier of approximately 160 kbit/s? No: 128 is lower than 160. But the desktop app can be set to Low or Normal, and the Web Player has no user quality control. On Premium, the desktop app offers Very high and lossless options beyond the Web Player’s fixed AAC 256 kbit/s tier. The settings and formats are not directly interchangeable, so the numbers alone cannot predict exactly what a listener will hear.

Desktop app settings can change during playback
Spotify says the desktop app adjusts audio quality automatically by default to help music play without stuttering. A desktop session may therefore use a different quality setting than you expect, particularly when the connection is inconsistent. You can inspect the setting in the app: open your profile menu, choose Settings, then Audio Quality. Spotify says automatic adjustment is enabled by default; desktop users can change the quality there. The Web Player does not offer a music-quality adjustment.
How to compare the two fairly
- Check whether the account is Free or Premium; Spotify’s Web Player quality differs by plan.
- In the desktop app, open Profile menu → Settings → Audio Quality. Note the selected tier and whether automatic adjustment is enabled.
- Play the same track through the same headphones or speakers, at the same volume, using the same output device and playback route.
- Keep in mind that you cannot set a matching quality tier in the Web Player, so an exact settings match may not be possible.
These controls reduce differences in the comparison; they do not establish that bitrate is the only reason two sessions sound different. Spotify’s documentation covers quality settings and playback compatibility, but does not prove that every perceived difference comes from bitrate.

Lossless playback has additional requirements
Spotify describes Premium lossless as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC and lists desktop app version 1.2.67 and above among the clients that support it. Spotify says availability depends on the content, a compatible device, and a stable connection; it recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for the best lossless listening experience. These conditions apply to lossless playback, not to every difference between the Web Player and desktop app.

Playback errors and protected-content warnings are compatibility problems, not evidence that the Web Player’s ordinary quality setting has changed. Spotify lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari for current baseline desktop browser support. If playback fails:
