A reduced-hours four-day workweek cuts total weekly work time, often by about 20%; a compressed workweek fits roughly the same weekly hours into fewer, longer days. The phrase “four-day workweek” can describe either arrangement, so check the weekly hours, pay, and shift length before comparing schedules.

Four-day workweek vs. compressed workweek: What’s the difference?

Question Reduced-hours four-day workweek Compressed workweek
Total weekly hours Fewer than before; a common model reduces hours by 20%. Roughly the same as before, worked across fewer days.
Pay In the common “100-80-100” framing, pay stays at 100% while time falls to 80%, with an aim to maintain output. Not inherently changed by the schedule; the arrangement must specify pay.
Daily shifts May remain similar in length, with an additional day away from work. Usually longer to fit the same hours into fewer days.
Example Four shorter days instead of five, with weekly hours reduced. A 40-hour week worked as four 10-hour days.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) described the four-day week used in its trial as shorthand for a 20% reduction in working time, without a pay reduction; it explicitly excluded simply working longer days without reducing hours. UKRI’s 18 July 2023 explanation makes the distinction clear.

Does a four-day workweek mean fewer hours?

Not necessarily. The label alone does not say whether weekly hours have fallen. A reduced-hours schedule means fewer total hours; a compressed schedule rearranges approximately the same hours over fewer, longer shifts. Ask for the weekly total and daily shift length rather than relying on the name.

When describing a proposed schedule, state four things: contracted weekly hours, whether pay changes, expected shift length, and whether the nonwork day is fixed for everyone or staggered. Also clarify weekday coverage and handoffs, since a day off for one employee may be a normal workday for colleagues.

Is a 4/10 schedule the same as a four-day workweek?

A 4/10 schedule usually means four 10-hour days: a common compressed arrangement for a 40-hour week. It is four workdays, but it does not reduce the weekly total to 32 hours. By contrast, a reduced-hours four-day schedule could mean four eight-hour days for someone previously working five eight-hour days, if weekly hours fall from 40 to 32 and pay is maintained. Those are examples, not universal schedule rules.

What does the evidence say about each model?

Reduced-hours pilots show promising wellbeing results, not a universal guarantee

The UK pilot ran from June to December 2022. It involved 61 organisations and around 2,900 workers; participating organisations committed to reduce working time by 20% for six months without reducing pay. At the end of the trial, 71% of employees reported reduced burnout and 39% were less stressed. Participating organisations also recorded a 57% fall in the number of staff leaving during the trial, compared with the preceding period. These are findings about organisations that took part, not a guaranteed outcome for every employer. UKRI’s summary of the trial reports the employee outcomes, while its follow-up on participating companies says 56 of the 61 continued with the policy and 18 described it as permanent.

A 2025 study in Nature Human Behaviour examined 2,896 employees across 141 organisations in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA, comparing participating organisations with 12 control companies. It reported improvements in burnout, job satisfaction, mental health, and physical health. The intervention preserved income while reducing work time; the improvements were associated with reduced hours, and the researchers identified better self-reported work ability, fewer sleep problems, and reduced fatigue as mediating factors. The results concern this kind of reorganised, reduced-hours intervention—not every schedule described as a four-day week. The study provides the methods and findings.

Compressed-week evidence is narrower

A 2024 study of a compressed schedule at one construction company examined time pressure, fatigue, perceived productivity, and work-life balance. Its abstract emphasizes that employee expectations shape outcomes but does not provide effect sizes, so it cannot establish how large or broadly applicable any effects are. The abstract describes that study.

A 2026 UK panel-study abstract compares reduced-hours and compressed arrangements and reports mental-health and leisure-satisfaction benefits for the reduced-hours form. The available abstract does not provide enough comparative detail to quantify effects or determine which arrangement performs better across every outcome. It is not a definitive head-to-head verdict. The abstract sets out the reported comparison.

What should workers and employers weigh?

For workers considering a schedule

  • Confirm whether contracted weekly hours actually fall and whether pay is preserved.
  • Check each shift’s start, finish, and length, including how breaks are handled.
  • Find out whether the day off is fixed, rotating, or staggered, and whether that fits care needs, commuting, appointments, and access to services.
  • Consider whether longer shifts would make recovery, concentration, or responsibilities outside work harder.
  • Ask how workload and overtime will be handled if the nominal hours change but expectations do not.

For employers designing a schedule

  • Map customer or service coverage, handoffs, and critical weekday availability before setting a common day off.
  • Review workload and meeting practices so fewer hours do not simply mean the same work at greater intensity.
  • Check whether the arrangement is fair and workable across different roles, including jobs that cannot be done remotely or paused for a day.
  • Plan how to evaluate output, workload, wellbeing, coverage, and retention rather than treating one measure as proof of success.

In the UK pilot, participating organisations used measures including technology and shorter meetings to reduce working time without compromising productivity, according to UKRI’s 2024 summary. The researchers also considered fairness, inclusion, and job security. These are design questions, not automatic results of adopting a four-day label.

Which schedule is the better fit?

Choose based on the actual trade-off. A reduced-hours model creates more nonwork time while preserving pay in its common form, but requires work redesign and reliable coverage. A compressed model preserves roughly the same weekly hours and may create a full additional day away from work, but concentrates work into longer shifts. The evidence summarized above is more developed for income-preserving reduced-hours pilots; it does not establish a definitive winner for every worker, occupation, or outcome.

Employment rules for hours, overtime, and breaks vary by location and job classification. The studies and summaries cited here do not establish legal requirements for a particular jurisdiction, so check the applicable local rules and employment agreement before implementing a schedule.
