The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-40261, created a supply-chain risk for affected Composer and Private Packagist deployments. It is important to separate that flaw from other PHP package attacks in which stolen maintainer credentials were used to publish malicious tags: available reporting does not establish that the Perforce vulnerability caused those incidents.
What CVE-2026-40261 did
Private Packagist’s advisory identifies CVE-2026-40261 as an upstream Composer vulnerability involving Perforce source handling. In the vulnerable processing path, package source-reference and source-URL values were used in shell commands without appropriate escaping. A malicious or compromised Composer repository could provide package metadata containing attacker-controlled values; the risk was therefore not limited to packages published through a trusted Packagist workflow.
If a vulnerable server processed that information, the result could be arbitrary shell command execution on the server. Private Packagist said the affected package-processing servers had access to package source code and credentials used to fetch it. The issue is a vulnerability in Composer’s handling of Perforce package information, not evidence that Packagist.org itself was breached.
Private Packagist’s CVE-2026-40261 advisory describes the vendor’s risk assessment and mitigations. The NVD record for CVE-2026-40261 lists affected Composer versions as 1.0 through 2.2.26 and 2.3 through 2.9.5. Those ranges concern Composer, not Private Packagist’s separate product versioning, and do not by themselves establish that every Composer installation exposed a vulnerable server-side processing path.

Which deployments were affected, and what changed
Private Packagist reported that it disabled Perforce support in its cloud service on April 10, 2026 as a precaution and updated Composer in the service. It released Private Packagist Self-Hosted 2.0.32 on April 14, 2026; the vendor lists earlier Self-Hosted versions as affected. Private Packagist also said it stopped delivering Perforce source information to Composer to help protect customers using older Composer versions.
Check the exact software components and processing path in your deployment rather than treating the NVD Composer range and the Private Packagist product threshold as interchangeable. For Self-Hosted installations, consult the vendor advisory and use its applicable fixed release guidance. Keep Composer updated, but do not assume that updating a client retroactively fixes an exposed server component.

Do not conflate the flaw with other PHP package attacks
Packagist authors Nils Adermann and Igor Benko described a separate set of attacks in a May 27, 2026 update. They said attackers used taken-over GitHub accounts and stolen access tokens to publish tags for packages they did not legitimately control. The update named laravel-lang on May 22 and intercom/intercom-php on April 30. The authors wrote: “One of the key elements of nearly every recent supply chain attack on Packagist involved attackers modifying existing git tags after the fact.” That statement concerns the recent attacks they discussed; it does not link them to CVE-2026-40261.
Packagist’s May 2026 update describes those account and tag incidents. Separately, KPMG’s June 2026 threat advisory reported that at least eight popular PHP libraries were infected in a Packagist attack with malware designed to steal secrets and propagate compromise. That is KPMG’s incident-scale figure, not a count of Composer versions affected by CVE-2026-40261. KPMG said attribution to named groups was not confirmed and remained unclear.

How Composer and repository controls reduce risk
Different safeguards operate at different layers. Composer’s client-side dependency policies require a sufficiently current client and appropriate configuration. Private Packagist’s repository controls can enforce organization-wide rules at the service level, but fallback behavior can affect whether a refusal applies consistently.
| Control | Where it applies | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Composer 2.10 dependency policies | Composer client | Packagist says malware-flagged versions are blocked during dependency resolution and installation under the defaults, and are surfaced by composer audit, which fails on malware findings by default. The malware-feed integration with Aikido is a Packagist statement, not an independent evaluation of detection completeness. |
| Private Packagist malware download refusal | Repository service | Can refuse to serve malware-flagged package artifacts. Private Packagist says this can cover older clients, subject to fallback settings. |
| Allowed Composer client versions | Organization-wide repository settings | Can restrict which Composer client versions are allowed to access the repository. |
| Composer plugin restrictions | Organization-wide repository settings | Can limit which packages may act as Composer plugins. |
Packagist announced the client policy features in its Composer 2.10 release post. Private Packagist documents its organization-level controls in its security settings documentation.

Account for upstream fallbacks
Private Packagist documents a specific trade-off: if legacy upstream dist or source fallbacks remain available, Composer may retrieve a package directly from its upstream location after the mirror refuses a download. That can bypass the repository’s refusal of a flagged artifact. Teams seeking consistent repository-wide blocking should review and, where appropriate, close those fallback paths; doing so may affect download resilience, so choose settings against the organization’s reliability needs and current service documentation.

- Identify package versions from
composer.lock, build records, and deployed artifacts; do not rely only on the current dependency manifest. - Compare the recorded package and version with the incident guidance for that specific package. The available reporting does not provide a single response procedure applicable to every PHP dependency incident.
- If exposure is indicated, follow the affected package’s guidance for credential rotation and cleanup. The separate PHP package reports describe malware intended to steal secrets, but do not establish that every installation was compromised.
