To improve gaming performance on an older PC, first identify whether the problem is low or inconsistent frame rate, stuttering, or slow loading. Check the affected game’s system requirements, then monitor CPU and GPU load, available memory, and temperatures while reproducing the problem. Make one change at a time and retest the same scene: the right fix depends on what is limiting your particular PC.
Identify what “poor performance” means
Low frame rate, stuttering, and long loading times can have different causes, so do not assume that one upgrade or Windows tweak will fix all three. Microsoft lists low RAM, heavy CPU or GPU load, and overheating as possible causes of choppiness. Steam also identifies low available memory, outdated drivers, and hardware that falls below a game’s requirements as possible performance issues.
- Low or inconsistent FPS: Observe CPU and GPU load during gameplay. A GPU at or near full use may be struggling with the game’s resolution or visual settings; a heavily loaded CPU can also limit performance.
- Stutters: Check available memory and temperatures as well as CPU and GPU load. Microsoft summarizes possible causes as: “Choppiness can be due to low RAM, heavy CPU or GPU load, or overheating.”
- Slow loading: Focus on the storage drive and loading behavior. An SSD may improve game or level loading, but that is not evidence that it will raise in-game FPS.
Compare the PC with the game’s published system requirements before changing settings or buying parts. If the computer does not meet them, settings adjustments may help, but Steam notes that a hardware upgrade may be needed.
Try reversible changes before buying parts
Close unnecessary background applications
Close applications you do not need while playing, especially ones using substantial CPU or memory, then test the same game scene again. This is a low-risk way to see whether background activity is contributing to the problem.

Check Windows Game Mode
Windows includes Game Mode, which Microsoft describes as prioritizing gaming tasks and reducing background activity. Check that it is enabled and compare performance before and after; Microsoft does not provide a universal FPS gain for the setting.
Reduce graphics demands if the GPU is the limit
If GPU load is high during the affected scene, lower the game’s resolution or its most demanding graphics settings and repeat the same test. High resolution and pixel-shader demand can expose GPU limitations. The trade-off is less visual detail, and the result varies by game and system.

Check cooling if temperatures are high
If temperatures rise substantially under sustained load or clocks fall while the game is running, inspect the PC’s airflow and cooling. Overheating can contribute to choppiness. The appropriate cleaning or repair depends on the computer; do not disassemble it without knowing its design and service requirements.
Check for a supported graphics driver
Steam identifies outdated drivers as a possible performance cause. Check the GPU maker’s support page for a driver that supports your graphics card and operating system. A newer driver is not guaranteed to improve every older card or game. If an update causes problems, use the GPU maker’s recovery guidance for that specific model rather than applying a generic rollback procedure.

Choose an upgrade only when the symptoms point to it
Match the part to the diagnosed limit, and check compatibility before ordering. Microsoft’s 2026 Windows gaming guidance describes 16GB of RAM as a practical starting point for most players and says 32GB can help when multitasking with browsers, Discord, or streaming tools. This is guidance, not a guaranteed performance threshold or a benchmark result.

For each possible upgrade, consider whether the symptom and observed limit match the part, whether it fits the PC, and whether a reversible settings change can test the same hypothesis first. Avoid buying RAM, a GPU, or storage based only on the age of the computer.

Retest consistently to tell whether a change helped
- Choose the affected game and a repeatable scene or activity where the problem occurs.
- Note the symptom and observe CPU load, GPU load, available memory, and temperatures during that scene.
- Change one setting or component at a time, then repeat the same scene under similar conditions.
- Judge the result against the original problem: smoother frame delivery, fewer stutters, or shorter loading are different outcomes.
- If the change does not address the observed limit, revert it where practical and investigate another likely cause before spending more.
