You don’t have to trade time with friends for reading. Start with a book you actually want to read, add a short session to a part of your day that already exists, and try reading alongside other people if that sounds more appealing than reading alone. There is no proven routine specifically for people who would rather socialize, so treat these ideas as experiments—not another obligation.
Choose a book that already interests you
Make the first choice about enjoyment, not what you think you should read. Try a story connected to a favorite show or film, a subject you already talk about, or a recommendation from a friend. Booksellers, library staff, and online reading communities can also help you find something that fits your taste.
If you start a book and it feels like a slog, choose another. Pleasure reading is not a test of willpower, and sticking with a title you dislike can make reading feel like a chore.
Start with a small, specific reading slot
Give reading a place in your day rather than waiting for a large block of free time to appear. Pair it with an existing cue: a few pages at lunch, while waiting for an appointment, or before bed. Five pages is one example suggested by The Associated Press, not a scientifically established ideal; choose a smaller or larger amount that feels manageable.

Attention researcher Gloria Mark of the University of California, Irvine, advises readers to “start by scheduling reading into your day.” Put the session on your calendar or leave your book somewhere you will see it at the chosen time. If a social plan takes priority, move the session or skip it without treating that as failure.
Let the format fit your day
Print, e-books, and audiobooks can all make reading easier to fit around the rest of life. A paperback may suit a quiet break; an e-book can be convenient to carry on a phone; an audiobook can work during chores or a commute. Choose based on when and where you have attention available, not on a belief that one format builds habits better.

Your local library may offer e-books or audiobooks through Libby with a library card. Availability and terms depend on the library and can change, so check your library’s current catalogue and borrowing instructions before relying on a particular title or format.
Make reading social without turning it into homework
If reading alone feels less inviting than spending time with people, try bringing the two together. A silent book club usually gives people time to read their own books in a shared space; the social part can be being together before or after, rather than discussing the same title. You could also read quietly beside a friend, exchange recommendations, or ask someone what they are enjoying.

Keep the arrangement easy to decline. You do not need to finish a book by a meeting date or hit a group target for the time to count. The aim is to make reading compatible with a social life, not to add another commitment that competes with it.
Choose a routine that feels convenient, not perfect

What reading research can—and can’t—tell you
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis by Zhao and Li examined 37 publications involving 15,434 participants in university library reading contexts across 10 countries and three continents. The authors reported positive associations between reading intention, attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norms. Many studies were cross-sectional, however, so they cannot establish which factors cause reading behavior. The review does not test routines for adults who prefer socializing.
In a separate 2026 study of 487 older adults in eastern China, Shuoshuo Li, Yiran Hua, and Jian Xu found that motivation was associated with library use through reading self-efficacy. That finding is specific to the study’s age group and region; it should not be assumed to apply to all adults.

For context, U.S. government time-use data reported by The Associated Press found that 16% of Americans read for pleasure on an average day in 2023, compared with 28% in 2004. The measure includes books, e-books, audiobooks, and periodicals. It describes broad reading patterns, not the habits of people who prefer socializing or the effect of any particular strategy.
