A television can add processing time before it displays the console’s image. If the problem is intermittent, check wireless conditions; if it follows one controller across games, test its inputs; and if it happens during online play, troubleshoot the network separately. Work through these free checks before buying anything.
1. Check whether the delay happens only in TV Mode
If controls feel delayed only when the Switch is connected to a television, the TV may be processing the signal before displaying the image and audio. That can make button presses seem late without indicating a console or controller defect. Nintendo recommends checking the TV manual for a setting such as Game Mode, which can shorten internal processing time. The setting’s name and availability vary by television. - Compare the same game in handheld mode and TV Mode, if your console supports both.
- If the delay appears only in TV Mode, open the television’s picture or input settings and look for Game Mode or a similar low-processing option.
- Consult the TV’s manual for how to enable it; menu paths differ by model.
This comparison helps identify TV processing as a likely part of the problem. It does not establish a particular latency figure or guarantee that a TV setting will eliminate every delay.
2. Check wireless controller response
Wireless problems are more likely when inputs drop out or respond inconsistently rather than feeling uniformly late. Before replacing a controller, check its charge, distance from the console, and surroundings. Nintendo identifies nearby wireless devices and obstructed placement as possible sources of interference. - Charge the Joy-Con or other wireless controller.
- Move closer to the console and place the console in the open rather than behind a TV or under or against metal.
- Keep it away from dense wiring and, where practical, from wireless devices. Nintendo advises avoiding wireless devices within three to four feet and lists speakers, cordless phones, microwaves, laptops or tablets, printers, headsets, and USB 3.0 devices as possible interference sources.
Test after each change so you can tell which adjustment, if any, helps. These checks are aimed at intermittent wireless response, not image delay caused by TV processing.
3. Find out whether the controller or game is responsible
Test the controller independently of the platformer. On the Switch, open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Test Input Devices, then choose the available button test. Also try the controller in another compatible game. Nintendo recommends these checks to help distinguish a controller problem from an issue limited to one game. - If a button does not register in the test, or the same trouble follows the controller into another compatible game, the controller may need service.
- If the test works and other games respond normally, check the affected game’s controller compatibility and in-game settings.
- If the symptoms seriously interfere with play, Nintendo says service may be appropriate.
4. Optionally test a Pro Controller over USB in TV Mode
A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be used with a wired connection in TV Mode. To try this setup, connect it to the dock with a USB charging cable, then enable System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Pro Controller Wired Communication. Nintendo requires system version 3.0.0 or higher for this setting. NFC cannot be used while the cable is connected, and the instructions do not apply to Switch Lite. This is an optional setup and diagnostic path, not a proven universal way to reduce input delay. If you use it to compare behavior, keep the game and TV settings the same while switching between wireless and wired play.

5. Treat online lag as a separate problem
If the main symptom is characters jumping around or responding slowly during online play, network transmission delay may be involved. Nintendo lists slow internet speeds, weak wireless signal, interference, and slow network devices among possible causes. Make one change at a time and test again. - Check whether the problem occurs in online play but not in local or offline play.
- Improve the wireless signal or reduce interference between the console and router.
- Consider whether other devices or network conditions could be slowing the connection.
- A wired internet connection can address the network path, but it will not fix local delay from TV processing.
