For The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, start with a preset that fits your PC and target resolution, then adjust one setting at a time while checking both image quality and frame pacing in the game. Keep path tracing as an optional maximum-visuals choice: CD PROJEKT RED gives it a separate hardware tier, and you can improve the picture without turning it on. This guide covers the Remastered release from September 29, 2026—not the 2015 game or the 2022 Next-Gen update.
Choose a target before changing settings
Decide whether you want a steady frame rate, higher image detail, or the strongest lighting effects your PC can manage. Also choose the resolution you actually intend to play at. CD PROJEKT RED warns that higher resolution significantly affects FPS, and notes that results vary by scene, system configuration, and settings. A preset is a useful starting point, not a promise of a particular frame rate.
- For smoother play: start with a preset appropriate to your hardware and output resolution. If performance is not steady, reduce the output-resolution burden or use a supported upscaling mode before trading away several visual settings at once.
- For better image quality: raise options in small steps and compare the same scene. Look for visible changes in lighting, shadows, reflections, textures, foliage, and distant detail.
- For maximum lighting fidelity: test ray tracing or path tracing only after establishing a playable baseline. Their cost depends on the system and chosen resolution.
Watch frame pacing as well as the average FPS counter. A high displayed rate is less useful if delivery feels uneven, and frame generation can increase displayed frames without being the same thing as rendering each frame natively.
Presets and detail settings: what to adjust first
Presets bundle multiple controls, so begin with one and make changes only when you can identify a visual or performance reason. The 2022 Next-Gen update grouped its Ultra+ options around background characters, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water, and detail. Those categories help explain the kinds of trade-offs to look for, but Remastered changes the renderer and graphics system. Do not assume that older menu names, preset behavior, or performance advice carries over unchanged.

Texture and world-detail options
Texture quality affects the detail visible on surfaces; foliage, grass, terrain, water, and distance-related controls affect how the world appears nearby and farther away. Raise the options whose improvement you can see at your chosen resolution, then check performance in a representative scene. The available evidence does not establish a universal ranking of these settings by FPS cost for every Remastered PC.
Shadows and lighting
Shadows and lighting can change the scene’s depth and mood, but the performance impact depends on the renderer path and system. If a change causes an unacceptable slowdown, compare it with the same scene and resolution before deciding whether to lower it. Avoid carrying over a recommendation from a different Witcher 3 release as though it were measured on Remastered.

Ray tracing or path tracing?
Ray tracing and path tracing are not simply two names for the same toggle. NVIDIA describes the Next-Gen renderer as combining rasterized graphics with selectable ray-traced global illumination, ambient occlusion, shadows, and reflections. For Remastered, NVIDIA describes path tracing as bringing lighting and rendering into one system, with more rays and light bounces. That is a vendor explanation of the technology; the practical trade-off is a more unified lighting approach versus its potentially substantial hardware cost.
- Try ray tracing if you want to evaluate selected ray-traced effects without starting with the maximum-fidelity path. Keep a close eye on frame pacing.
- Try path tracing as a separate high-end branch if your priority is lighting fidelity and your PC can sustain the result. It is not a prerequisite for a strong-looking game.
- Turn them off or reduce the workload if the cost compromises the kind of smooth play you want. Choose based on your own scene and display target, not a universal FPS ranking.
CD PROJEKT RED calls path tracing the most visually advanced version of Remastered and lists it in a distinct requirement tier. The official path-tracing tier names an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 with 16 GB of VRAM; that is a reference for this maximum-fidelity tier, not a requirement for ordinary play.

Upscaling, frame generation, and Ray Reconstruction
Upscaling and frame generation address different parts of the graphics pipeline. DLSS, FSR, and XeSS upscaling modes render internally below the output resolution and reconstruct an image for the display. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames. It does not replace upscaling, and neither feature should be treated as interchangeable with the other. NVIDIA’s Ray Reconstruction is intended to reconstruct ray-traced or path-traced effects.
Test the upscaling options available on your system at your target resolution. Compare image clarity and motion, not just the FPS number. If a mode improves performance but its reconstructed image is not acceptable to you, try a different supported mode or return to native rendering and adjust another setting.

CD PROJEKT RED’s published performance targets use different methods by tier: RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing were measured with DLSS, FSR, or XeSS set to Auto; the Path Tracing configuration also enabled frame generation. The other tiers were measured at native resolution with upscaling off. The targets are not guarantees, and the unlike test configurations should not be read as directly comparable native-rendering results.
How to tune settings without guessing
- Update the game and establish a baseline. Confirm that your installation is on the current build, choose your output resolution, and begin with a suitable preset. Record how the game feels in a scene you can revisit.
- Decide whether to use upscaling. If you need more performance, test a supported DLSS, FSR, or XeSS mode and assess the image at your actual display resolution.
- Adjust one visual category at a time. Compare lighting effects, shadows, textures, foliage, and world detail separately where the current menu allows it. Keep a change only if its visible benefit is worth its cost on your system.
- Test ray tracing and path tracing separately. They represent different visual workloads. Do not enable both assumptions at once and attribute the resulting performance change to a single setting.
- Evaluate frame generation on its own merits. Check whether motion feels better and whether displayed-frame gains come with acceptable responsiveness and image quality.
- Recheck after a patch or setting change. Use the same scene and resolution when comparing. If a graphics option is missing or behaves differently, verify the game build and distribution version before changing unrelated settings.
Hardware and version details that affect the advice
CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements include Minimum, Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing tiers. The official page’s FPS figures are targets tied to those tiers and their stated test methods, rather than guaranteed results on every PC. In particular, the path-tracing configuration is tested at 2160p and 60 FPS with frame generation enabled; do not interpret that as a native-rendering guarantee.

An SSD is required for the game’s current technical enhancements. Windows 10 is no longer officially supported; CD PROJEKT RED says it may still run, but compatibility and performance are not guaranteed. An SSD may satisfy the installation requirement, but it is not itself a graphics-quality upgrade.
Remastered released on September 29, 2026 as a free upgrade for owners, according to CD PROJEKT RED. The company lists enhanced textures, foliage, lighting, rendering, ray tracing, and PC path tracing among its visual changes. Since older editions have different renderers and behavior, check that advice and benchmarks you find explicitly apply to Remastered.
Builds can also differ by distribution. Windows Central reported an October 1, 2026 Patch 5.00b hotfix that included a fix for DLSS availability in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC version and lighting adjustments. If an option is absent or results differ from what you expect, update the game and confirm the version and storefront-specific build you are running.
Which older tips should you ignore?
HairWorks and HBAO+ advice often refers to the original DirectX 11-era game. NVIDIA’s historic guide explains HairWorks as hair and fur rendering and HBAO+ as ambient occlusion; it reported HBAO+ running four FPS slower than SSAO in its own old test. That result is not a Remastered benchmark and should not be used to predict current performance. Likewise, Next-Gen Ultra+ notes are useful background for setting categories, not proof that every label or cost remains the same in Remastered.
