But installing an APK outside Google Play—known as sideloading—does not by itself mean the app is malicious. There is no reliable estimate of what share of pirated Android apps contain malware, so judge the source, publisher, permissions, and any Play Protect warning rather than treating every APK alike.
Why pirated apps can be a security risk
A pirated app is an unauthorized copy, and it may not be identical to the version its developer distributes. Someone can modify or repackage an APK, adding behavior the original publisher never intended. Google defines malware broadly: “Malware is any code that could put a user, a user’s data, or a device at risk.” Its examples of potentially harmful applications include trojans, phishing, spyware, ransomware, and billing fraud.
Depending on what the code does, risks can include compromising a device, enabling remote control, transmitting personal data or credentials without authorization, or causing financial loss. The exact behavior may differ by device and Android version.
Sideloading is a method, not a malware verdict
Google uses “sideloaded” for apps loaded from an unknown source instead of through Google Play. The term describes how an app was installed; it does not establish whether the app is safe. An APK may be legitimate, while an app from any source can still pose risks. The evidence does not support calling every alternative store unsafe or every sideloaded app malicious.

Google reports that more than 95% of installations from major malware families that exploit sensitive permissions highly correlated with financial fraud came from internet-sideloading sources such as browsers, messaging apps, or file managers. That is a statistic about installations from those particular malware families—not the percentage of all sideloaded apps that are malicious, or a measure specific to pirated apps.
What Play Protect can—and cannot—tell you
On supported devices with Google Play services, Google Play Protect checks apps from Google Play and other sources, and regularly scans installed apps. Google says it may warn about, disable, or remove an app it detects as harmful. It recommends keeping Play Protect enabled; no scanner can guarantee that every harmful app will be detected.

Pay attention to the wording on screen. “Play Protect hasn’t seen this app before” means the app is unfamiliar and prompts a scan; it is not a positive finding that the app is malware. An explicit warning that an app is harmful is different: take it seriously and follow the device’s instructions to remove or otherwise address it. Do not disable protection just because a website, app, or caller asks you to.
Google’s 2025 reporting provides a sense of the scale of Play Protect activity, but not a piracy-specific infection rate:

- Google says Play Protect scanned more than 350 billion Android apps daily in 2025, including apps from Google Play and other sources. This is a scanning-volume figure, not a count of unique users or infections.
- Google says real-time scanning identified more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play in 2025 and warned users or blocked the apps. This is Google’s detection count, not the number of successful infections or a count limited to pirated apps.
- For enhanced fraud protection in 2025, Google reports blocking 266 million risky installation attempts and helping protect users from 872,000 unique high-risk applications. An attempted installation is not a confirmed infection. Google describes expanded availability or coverage across 185 markets and more than 2.8 billion Android devices.
These are figures reported by Google, not independent estimates of the prevalence of malware in pirated apps. Feature availability, warning screens, and market coverage can change.
How to assess an app before installing it
- Check who publishes and maintains it. Prefer the developer’s official listing or a recognized store with meaningful review and update practices. A familiar store is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee that every app is safe.
- Be wary of unexpected APK links. Avoid pirated-app sites, shortened links, and app files sent unexpectedly through messages. If you cannot verify the publisher and source, do not install the file.
- Review permissions in context. Ask whether each requested capability fits the app’s stated purpose. SMS, notification, or accessibility access without a clear reason is cause to stop and verify the publisher before proceeding.
- Read the Play Protect prompt carefully. An unfamiliar-app scan prompt is not the same as a harmful-app warning. Do not override an explicit harmful-app warning casually.
- Keep protections and software current. Leave Play Protect on and install Android and app updates. These steps reduce risk but cannot promise that an app is harmless.
Why some permission warnings are market-specific
Google says certain sensitive permissions are frequently abused for financial fraud. Its enhanced protection can block some apps installed from internet sources when they request particular sensitive permissions, but Google says the feature is active only in select markets. Do not assume that this specific block will appear on every device or in every country; the absence of a warning does not establish that an app is safe.

If you already installed an app that triggers a warning
- For an explicit harmful-app warning: follow the removal action shown by Play Protect or uninstall the app. Do not keep using it or disable protection to get around the warning.
- For an unfamiliar-app scan prompt: understand that it asks to scan an app Play Protect has not seen before; it does not itself confirm malware. If the source or publisher cannot be verified, the safer choice is not to proceed.
- Review the app’s access: if you keep an app after verifying it, check that its permissions match its function and revoke access it does not need.
- Keep the device protected: leave Play Protect enabled and apply available Android and app updates.
What device certification does not mean
A certified Android device meets a baseline related to its build, security model, and included Play Protect features. Certification is not a promise that every app installed on the device is safe, nor does it validate a particular APK.
