Business applications are likely to keep evolving as vendors embed AI into software and organizations move from pilots toward scaled, workflow-focused deployments. Gartner’s outlook points to continued enterprise application investment, but neither adoption speed nor commercial payoff is certain. For businesses, the practical question is which workflows merit change, how new capabilities fit existing systems and data, and whether the results justify ongoing costs.

What do current forecasts say about business applications?

Gartner’s 24 June 2026 forecast projects sustained double-digit growth in worldwide enterprise application software through 2030, as organizations invest to accelerate adoption and scale agentic applications. The abstract available for that forecast does not provide a specific growth percentage or market total, so neither should be inferred from it. Read Gartner’s 2Q26 enterprise application software forecast.

A separate Gartner forecast analysis published 3 September 2026 describes organizations as shifting quickly from agentic AI pilots toward full-scale adoption, while also noting short-term headwinds. This is a market outlook, not proof that every organization will scale deployments or that any particular vendor will benefit. Read Gartner’s enterprise application forecast analysis.

How might AI change business software?

AI is increasingly being built into applications around particular tasks and workflows, rather than appearing only as a separate general-purpose assistant. Gartner predicted in an August 2025 release that 40% of enterprise applications would integrate task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% at the time of that release. This is a dated forecast, not a measured adoption result for October 2026. See Gartner’s agent-integration prediction.

Gartner Senior Director Analyst Anushree Verma said in the August 2025 release: “AI agents will evolve rapidly, progressing from task and application specific agents to agentic ecosystems.” That describes a possible direction of development; it does not establish when a particular business will reach it or what results it will achieve.

The same release gave a best-case scenario in which agentic AI could account for approximately 30% of enterprise application software revenue by 2035, exceeding $450 billion, compared with 2% in 2025. This is explicitly a best-case scenario published in 2025, not a central forecast or a current result.

Why will cost and measurable value matter?

AI investment is also drawing closer scrutiny around operating efficiency and outcomes. Gartner forecast worldwide end-user spending on AI models and platforms at $64.252 billion in 2026, up 63.4% from its forecast of $39.311 billion in 2025. Gartner published these forecast values in July 2026; they are not final observed spending figures. These categories are distinct from enterprise application software, so the figures should not be added together or treated as evidence that a specific application project will pay off. See Gartner’s AI platforms and models spending forecast.

In that 20 July 2026 release, Gartner Senior Principal Research Analyst Arunasree Cheparthi said: “Enterprise AI budgets are coming under greater scrutiny, with increased focus on usage efficiency, cost control and measurable outcomes,” Gartner’s commentary also highlights cost, latency, performance, reliability and visible value. For an application decision, the implication is to assess continuing usage and operating costs alongside the outcome—not just the cost or promise of a pilot.

How should a business evaluate future applications?

The following questions are practical evaluation criteria drawn from the market’s emphasis on workflows, scaling and budget scrutiny. They are not a published Gartner scorecard or a universal control checklist.

Does it fit a valuable workflow?

Identify a frequent process where better speed, quality or consistency would matter. Compare an application that addresses that process with a general assistant that may be useful but has no clear connection to a business outcome. Define what improvement would count as success before deploying.

Can it work with the systems and data required?

Map the information and tools the workflow depends on. Determine whether the application can access the relevant business data and integrate with current systems in a way the organization can support. A capable feature has limited practical value if it cannot operate in the workflow where it is needed.

Is the organization ready to move beyond a pilot?

Scaling a workflow requires the ability to supervise it, evaluate its performance and decide when it should be expanded. Consider who is responsible for oversight and how the organization will assess the workflow in operation. Readiness will vary by process and organization; the forecasts do not establish a single checklist or implementation timeline.

Can the business track cost and outcomes?

Decide how usage and ongoing costs will be monitored, then choose a measurable outcome that would justify continued deployment. Include relevant operating considerations such as latency, performance and reliability. If costs rise without a visible benefit, the business needs a basis for revising or stopping the deployment.

What the outlook cannot tell an individual business

Gartner’s figures describe global market categories and forecasts; they do not resolve differences by country, industry, company size, application class or vendor. Market growth does not guarantee a particular organization’s adoption, return on investment or choice of software. Nor do these forecasts establish that existing applications will inevitably be replaced. A sound decision depends on the organization’s own workflow needs, integration constraints, operating readiness and evidence of value.
