SQLJ lets Java programs embed predefined SQL statements using #sql clauses. A translator converts those clauses into Java support code and, in some vendor workflows, a profile for database customization or binding. Use it when SQL is known in advance and earlier SQL checking is useful; choose JDBC for dynamically assembled statements or more direct runtime control. An application can use both.
What SQLJ does
IBM describes SQLJ as a way to “embed SQL statements in Java™ programs.” In practice, a programmer writes SQLJ clauses in Java source, and an SQLJ translator processes them into standard Java support code. Depending on the vendor toolchain, translation can also create a serialized profile used for customization or binding.
SQLJ is aimed at static SQL: statements defined as part of the program rather than assembled from changing SQL text at runtime. Oracle’s Database 12.1 guide describes SQLJ source as Java containing embedded statements that follow ISO SQLJ Language Reference syntax, and identifies the standard’s scope as static SQL. Oracle Database 26 documentation characterizes SQLJ as an ANSI SQL-1999 standard. These descriptions refer to particular documentation and releases; implementation steps and capabilities depend on the database product.
SQLJ and JDBC compared
| Question | SQLJ | JDBC |
|---|---|---|
| How is SQL supplied? | Predefined SQL is embedded in Java with #sql clauses. |
SQL can be supplied or assembled at runtime, making JDBC suitable for dynamic SQL. |
| When can problems be detected? | Vendor translation and checking tools may catch syntax, semantic, schema, or type problems before execution, depending on configuration. | More checks occur as the application creates and executes statements at runtime. |
| What kind of control does it favor? | Concise use of predefined, schema-bound operations. | Finer runtime control over statement execution and greater flexibility. |
| Can the two be combined? | Yes. Use SQLJ for static operations within an application that also uses JDBC. | Yes. JDBC can handle dynamic operations alongside SQLJ statements. |
SQLJ is not automatically faster in every application. IBM documentation makes qualitative performance claims in its product context, but that does not establish a universal speed advantage across databases and workloads.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When SQLJ is a good fit
- Queries and updates are known when the program is written.
- Earlier checking against SQL syntax, schema, or types would help catch defects during development.
- The project’s database and vendor tools support the translation, customization, and binding workflow it requires.
When JDBC is a better fit
- The application builds SQL based on runtime conditions, such as optional filters or user-selected operations.
- The code needs detailed control over statement execution at runtime.
- The target SQLJ implementation lacks a capability the application needs. For example, IBM Informix 14.10 documentation says its embedded SQLJ does not support dynamic SQL.
How an SQLJ statement looks
A clause can use Java variables as host variables in a static statement:
#sql [myConnCtxt] { UPDATE EMP SET SALARY = :newSalary WHERE EMPNO = :empID };
Here, newSalary and empID supply values to an update whose SQL structure is fixed in the source. IBM’s SQLJ documentation describes this style of embedded statement and host-variable use.

What the development workflow involves
Do not assume that adding a #sql clause is the only build change. IBM documents a workflow that translates SQLJ source into Java and a serialized profile, then customizes or binds where applicable before Java compilation and execution with the relevant runtime and database packages. Exact ordering and required tools vary by product and release.
- Write the SQLJ source. Add embedded static SQL clauses to Java source, using the target implementation’s syntax and supported features.
- Run the vendor SQLJ translator. The translator generates Java support code and may produce a profile for subsequent steps.
- Customize or bind if required. Follow the database product’s instructions for using the generated profile; this step is vendor- and configuration-dependent.
- Compile and run. Compile the generated Java with the appropriate runtime and database packages, then execute using the database environment and driver supported by that implementation.
SQLJ runtime implementations commonly call the target database’s JDBC driver. That relationship does not make the programming styles interchangeable: SQLJ provides the embedded static-SQL model, while JDBC is available for operations that need runtime flexibility.

Check your platform before adopting SQLJ
SQLJ support is documented for particular vendor products and releases, not as a single universal setup. For example, IBM’s references cover Db2 for z/OS 12 and Informix 14.10, while Oracle’s cited SQLJ language and environment guides cover Database 12.1 and Database 26. Confirm the translator, runtime, profile handling, and supported SQL features for the exact database and release used by your project.
