The Kano Computer Kit was a build-it-yourself Raspberry Pi computer bundled with Kano OS, a Linux-based system, and guided coding activities. Its “hacking” angle was playful exploration—making games, trying creative projects and learning to use a terminal—not a course in offensive cybersecurity. The documented Pi 3 editions are historical products, so their specifications and contents should not be mistaken for current availability.
What was the Kano Computer Kit?
The original Kano Computer Kit with Raspberry Pi 3 combined a small computer, peripherals and an illustrated build guide. Rather than asking a beginner to source parts and install an operating system from scratch, the kit made assembling and exploring a computer part of the learning experience. Raspberry Pi described Kano’s original approach in 2013 as a beginner-friendly kit with Kano OS and learning levels on an 8 GB SD card (Raspberry Pi, 2013).
The Pi 3 base kit’s retailer listing specifies a 1 GB RAM Raspberry Pi 3 with a 1.2 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet and HDMI. Its listed bundle included a wireless keyboard, programmable light ring, custom case, cables, memory card, USB power supply, storybook and stickers. Those are specifications and contents for that particular historical edition, not a description of a modern Raspberry Pi kit (Adafruit: Kano Computer Kit with Raspberry Pi 3).
What could kids learn and make?
The kit paired Kano OS Beta 3.0, based on Linux, with activities intended to make coding and computer exploration approachable. The product listing names Kano Blocks for making projects such as Minecraft and Pong, and describes Terminal Quest as an introduction to Linux, alongside Snake. It also lists creative coding options and languages including Python, JavaScript, Ruby, CoffeeScript and Bash. The listing documents what was offered; it does not establish that every activity or download remains available today.

In this context, “hacking” means experimenting: building a computer, seeing how its software works, and using code to create or change things. The described activities do not amount to offensive-security training. Kano’s founder-era pitch also emphasized combining hardware, software, peripherals and documentation to make Raspberry Pi more approachable; Raspberry Pi inventor Eben Upton is quoted on Kano’s homepage endorsing that kind of accessibility. That endorsement is not an independent evaluation of learning outcomes (Kano).
Which Kano kit included a screen?
Edition names matter: the basic Pi 3 kit did not include a display. Kano offered both a Complete bundle with a screen and a separate Screen Kit for adding one to a compatible setup.

Kano’s product history dates the Pi 3 base kit to March/April 2016, the Computer Kit Complete to November 2017 and the Computer Kit Touch to September 2018. The Touch was a later generation; do not assume its features are part of the Pi 3 base or Complete listings (Kano product history).
What age is the kit for?
Kano describes its learning platform as designed for students aged 8–14, roughly US grades 4–8 and UK Key Stage 2 through early Key Stage 3. The company notes that some children aged 6–7 may need extra help with reading instructions and typing. The historical Adafruit listings likewise advise that some children aged 6–8 may need parental supervision to read the book and assemble components. These are age and supervision guidelines, not guarantees that every child will be ready to build or code independently.

Can you still get Kano Linux or use Kano World?
The three cited Adafruit product pages were marked “No longer stocked” when inspected on October 4, 2026. That status applies to those retailer listings: it does not rule out secondhand kits or stock from another seller. A used or marketplace listing should be checked carefully for the exact edition, included display and accessories, condition, and seller.
Kano’s homepage describes Kano World as a place to make and share projects, but its FAQ still refers to features returning in 2024. Since that date has passed and the page gives no reliable current service details, it does not establish whether accounts, sharing, challenges, support or Kano OS downloads are working now. Do not assume an old kit’s online features or software downloads will be available without checking directly.
