Google Cloud’s current workflow for launching VM-based apps is through Google Cloud Marketplace (the service the older title phrase “Google Cloud Launcher” refers to). Choose a VM listing, review its configuration and estimated costs, then deploy it to Compute Engine using the options that listing supports. Some listings also provide a Terraform-based command-line deployment.
What a Marketplace VM app deploys
A Marketplace VM product is a custom virtual machine instance that runs on Compute Engine. Marketplace packages software with a deployment workflow intended to reduce manual setup; it does not eliminate the need to choose product-specific settings or review the listing before launch. Google describes Marketplace as a way to deploy functional software packages on Google Cloud, with the ability to scale later: Google Cloud Marketplace overview.
There is no single configuration shared by all VM apps. The listing determines the supported launch method and available options. Before deploying, check the VM type, operating system, configurable settings, estimated costs, and the publisher’s support and maintenance details.
How to deploy a VM app from Google Cloud Marketplace
- Open the product listing. Find the VM product in Google Cloud Marketplace and review its description, deployment method, support information, and estimated costs.
- Choose the available configuration. Set the listing’s offered options, which can include VM type and operating system. Available settings differ between products.
- Start the deployment using the listing’s supported method. Follow the on-page deployment flow. Do not assume that every listing offers both console and command-line deployment.
- Review the deployment and manage it in Google Cloud. Google’s documentation describes managing VM deployments through Deployment Manager and the VM Instances page. Where a deployment integrates with Cloud Monitoring, its agents can provide product-specific dashboards and alerts. See Google Cloud deployment management.
Can you deploy a Marketplace VM with Terraform?
Some VM product listings support deployment from the command line using Terraform. Google recommends Terraform as a deployment-package option, but support is product-specific; check the individual listing for its actual deployment methods. Terraform CLI workflow for supported listings
- Open the VM product’s Marketplace listing and choose its command-line or Terraform deployment option, if offered.
- Select or create a service account for the deployment, as appropriate for the workflow.
- Configure the Google Cloud CLI for Terraform deployment.
- Download the included Terraform module or generate the code provided for that product.
- Deploy using the product-specific module or generated code and the configured account.
The service account used for a CLI deployment needs the Compute Admin IAM role, roles/compute.admin. Follow the product-specific instructions in Google Cloud’s VM CLI deployment guide; the module and exact configuration are not universal across listings.
What to check before choosing a listing
- Deployment method: Confirm whether the product launches through the console, supports Terraform CLI deployment, or offers another documented option.
- Configuration: Review the available VM type, operating system, and product settings. A listing’s choices may not match another product’s.
- Estimated cost: Check the estimate shown for the product and configuration you intend to deploy.
- Support and maintenance: Read the listing’s publisher support details and maintenance information before relying on the software.
Why listings differ
Marketplace VM products must run on Compute Engine and use a Marketplace-hosted image with an attached Compute Engine license. Google’s publisher guidance also requires compliance with Marketplace open-source policy and end-to-end testing; critical security issues identified by Google or the publisher must be resolved by updating the product. These are requirements for products offered through the Marketplace, not a guarantee that all listings use the same launch flow or have identical support terms.
