Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNeither NetApp nor Dell PowerStore is the better choice for every enterprise workload. Compare the specific NetApp family—especially block-focused ASA versus broader-workload AFF—with the exact PowerStore model and deployment. Then validate protocol support, recovery behavior, usable capacity, operations, and cost against your own requirements.
First, define which NetApp platform you mean
“NetApp” is not a single array for this comparison. NetApp’s cited competitive material compares Dell PowerStore with its ASA A-Series, which it describes as block-optimized and powered by ONTAP. NetApp’s AFF family has broader ONTAP positioning for block, file, and object management. Those families should not be treated as interchangeable when evaluating fit.
Dell PowerStore is also a product family rather than one fixed configuration. Its specifications and capabilities can vary by model and deployment. A useful comparison therefore names the ASA or AFF system, PowerStore model, software release, and deployment being quoted.
Compare workload and protocol fit
Dell lists block, file, and VMware vVol workloads for PowerStore. Its T-series specifications include FC, NVMe/FC, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP, NFS, and SMB. NetApp’s ASA comparison mentions NVMe/TCP, while AFF is positioned for broader ONTAP workload management.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These descriptions are starting points, not a substitute for an interoperability check. Confirm that the exact quoted system and release support the protocols, host operating systems, hypervisor versions, and application configurations you plan to use.
| Platform or family | Vendor-described scope | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| NetApp ASA A-Series | Block-optimized and ONTAP-powered; NetApp competitive material mentions NVMe/TCP. | Required host protocols, supported configurations, node and capacity limits, and the expansion path for the quoted system. |
| NetApp AFF | Broader ONTAP management for block, file, and object workloads. | Exact model and release support for each required workload, protocol, and management integration. |
| Dell PowerStore T-series | Dell lists FC, NVMe/FC, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP, NFS, and SMB, alongside VMware vVol support for PowerStore. | Protocol versions, ports, host interoperability, and workload support for the specific model and release. |
Assess architecture and scaling against demand
NetApp’s ASA competitive material describes an all-NVMe, scale-out architecture and includes vendor claims about node and capacity scale. Dell describes PowerStore as end-to-end NVMe, with active-active dual controllers and clustering; performance characteristics depend on model. These architecture descriptions do not establish which array will be faster for a particular database, virtualized estate, or mixed workload.

Ask each vendor to map the proposed configuration to your expected capacity growth, workload placement, and failure scenarios. Validate current technical documentation for node limits, expansion options, and failover behavior, then test with representative data and I/O patterns where possible.
Map data protection to recovery objectives
NetApp materials promote ONTAP snapshots, ransomware protection, and hybrid-cloud data management. Some claims are specific to ASA C-Series or the vendor’s ASA comparison, so confirm which features apply to the exact system under consideration. Dell describes local, remote, and cloud-based protection, as well as metro replication with automatic failover.

Feature lists alone do not show whether a platform can meet an application’s recovery time objective (RTO) or recovery point objective (RPO). Define those targets per application, then validate the replication topology, copy immutability, application consistency, and recovery procedure. Include an actual recovery exercise in the evaluation rather than relying only on a design presentation.
Treat efficiency and availability figures as scoped vendor terms
NetApp publishes efficiency guarantees for AFF product families, with figures and workload categories that differ across its current product material. Dell product pages describe data-reduction guarantees that may vary by model or current program, and Dell also makes design-availability claims. These are vendor statements, not independent workload-matched measurements; their scopes and contractual terms are not automatically comparable.

For a fair capacity and cost comparison, request written terms for the quoted configurations and calculate usable capacity using your own data characteristics and equivalent assumptions. Compare the resulting quotes with support, licensing, data protection, expansion, and migration costs included. Do not infer a guaranteed result for your data from a vendor’s general efficiency claim.

NetApp presents ONTAP as a unified management layer across NetApp systems and cloud services. Dell says required storage and management software is included for PowerStore and describes non-disruptive upgrades. These descriptions are useful prompts for operational review, but they do not establish the effort or risk of operating either platform in a particular organization.

Evaluate the current team’s skills, automation practices, support model, upgrade process, lifecycle terms, and integration with existing monitoring and backup workflows. Include the work and risk of migration in the comparison, not only the array purchase price.
Run a like-for-like evaluation
- Specify the candidates. Record the NetApp family and model, Dell PowerStore model, deployment, software releases, and required protocols for each proposal.
- Describe real workloads. Provide representative capacity, data characteristics, I/O patterns, growth expectations, and application-consistency requirements. Ask vendors to document the assumptions behind sizing and efficiency estimates.
- Test the critical paths. Where practical, use representative workloads to assess performance and operational behavior. Exercise host connectivity, failover, expansion, and the recovery steps relevant to your RTO and RPO.
- Compare usable capacity and full costs. Align capacity assumptions and include support, licensing, protection, expansion, and migration in equivalent quotes. Review any guarantee as written contractual language with its exact scope.
- Review operating and exit plans. Compare upgrade responsibilities, staff training, automation, support arrangements, and how data and applications would move if requirements change.
Which platform should you evaluate?
- Evaluate NetApp ASA when the requirement is block-focused and ONTAP capabilities are central to the design.
- Evaluate NetApp AFF when broader ONTAP workload management across block, file, and object is important.
- Evaluate Dell PowerStore when its unified NVMe approach, listed protocols, deployment characteristics, and fit with Dell operations align with the requirements.
These are starting points, not a brand-level verdict. Make the decision using current documentation for the exact configurations and evidence from your own workload evaluation.
