Before buying a used Caterpillar machine, verify its identity and records, inspect its condition, and test it safely. If it is advertised as Cat Certified Used, request the inspection report and written protection terms for that exact machine: the designation adds useful evidence, but does not guarantee future life or suitability for your work.
Start with the machine’s identity and history
Ask the seller for the exact model, serial number, configuration, operating hours and included attachments. Match the serial number on the machine to the listing and records; a mismatch needs resolving before you rely on any history or inspection paperwork.
Request service and maintenance records, repairs and parts replacements, service hours, incident or accident history, available fluid-sampling results, and details of any remaining original warranty. Also ask what work was done to prepare the machine for sale, with itemized repairs and replacements. Records help establish context, but they do not replace a physical inspection. Caterpillar recommends reviewing records and doing your own inspection and test drive in its used-equipment buyer guidance.
Ask about prior use and ownership. Cat Certified Used machines may come from dealer rental fleets, trade-ins or lease returns; some rental machines may have complete service histories available. The source alone does not establish the condition of the individual machine.

Inspect the machine in person
Begin with a walkaround before startup. Look for leaks, visible damage, missing parts, cracked glass, damaged hoses, uneven wear and signs of repairs. Check that the machine’s present condition is consistent with the listing and any inspection report.
Undercarriage and tires
For wheeled equipment, check tires for uneven wear, bulges, cracks and missing bolts. Caterpillar recommends using a tread gauge to assess tire wear in its used-equipment inspection guidance. A tread gauge does not measure track wear. For tracked machines, ask for documented undercarriage measurements; Caterpillar says its certification preparation may use track-measuring or ultrasonic wear tools.

Engine, transmission and hydraulics
Where safe and appropriate, start and operate the machine. Watch for warning or error messages, unusual noise, smoke, leaks, or trouble engaging or moving. Inspect hydraulic cylinders, hoses, the pump compartment and attachments for leaks, scoring, wear or damage. Caterpillar notes that hydraulic repairs can be time-consuming and costly.
Controls and representative operation
If you are qualified and conditions are safe, operate the controls and functions through a representative work cycle. A test drive or operating check can reveal issues a walkaround will not. If you lack the expertise or tools to judge the machine, arrange an independent heavy-equipment inspection. A buyer’s unaided check is not equivalent to a trained inspector’s assessment.

What Cat Certified Used means
Cat Certified Used is a specific Caterpillar dealer designation, not a synonym for any used Caterpillar machine. Caterpillar describes a process that can include configuration and history review, electronic checks, a walkaround, startup and maneuvering, operational tests, component ratings and access to an inspection report. The process may include up to a 140-point inspection, required service and latest maintenance, according to the Certified Used inspection page.
Caterpillar says every component must rate “Good” on its standard used inspection form for a machine to carry the designation. In the form’s rating system, “Good” means no repair or replacement is needed; “Fair” means repair is appropriate but replacement is not needed; and “Poor” means replacement is needed. The page says critical components and items rated Fair or Poor receive remarks and photographs, and that items failing the requirements must be repaired before the designation is applied.

The stated certification criteria include at least 50% life remaining for specified undercarriage or tires and ground-engaging tools. The page also describes criteria for cab, components, cylinders, sheet metal and counterweights, glass and mirrors, lights, and hoses. These are program criteria, not a promise of a particular remaining lifespan or a guarantee that the machine suits your workload.
Read the report for the exact unit
Request the inspection report tied to the machine’s serial number. Caterpillar says inspectors review configuration, additions, service and repair history, fluid samples and service codes, then inspect and test the machine. Compare the report with the listing and the machine as it stands now. Ask the dealer to explain discrepancies or any remarks and photographs before purchase.

Compare ordinary used and Cat Certified Used listings
A machine advertised simply as used is not thereby certified. Caterpillar describes its general used inventory as spanning different ages and operating-hour ranges and recommends that buyers review records, inspect and test-drive the machine. Certification can reduce uncertainty through a standardized inspection and applicable protection, but it does not replace checking the particular unit’s history, condition and job fit.
Confirm protection and service support in writing
Caterpillar says Cat Certified Used equipment is protected for at least 12 months or a specified number of operating hours. Coverage details vary by product, application and location, so obtain the applicable written terms from an authorized dealer before relying on the badge. Clarify the covered components, time or hour limit, exclusions, transfer conditions and claim procedure. See Caterpillar’s used-equipment warranty information.
Also consider whether parts, service and dealer support are accessible where the machine will work. Caterpillar describes condition monitoring as a combination of inspections, fluid analysis, electronic equipment information and equipment history. Cat S·O·S fluid analysis can provide information about oil and coolant condition and component wear; treat a sample as one piece of evidence alongside records, operation and physical inspection. Compare total cost and risk, not only asking price
Put candidate machines on the same basis. A lower asking price may not be the lower-cost choice if repairs are likely, wear items are near replacement, or service support is difficult to access. Caterpillar’s reviewed materials do not provide a universal used-machine price benchmark or cost formula, so assess the specific machines and obtain current local financing terms where relevant.

Questions to resolve before you commit
- Does the machine’s serial number match its listing, records and inspection report?
- Are the hours, configuration and attachments documented and consistent?
- What maintenance, repairs, parts replacements or incidents are recorded, and what is unknown?
- What did the inspection find, and have all listed repairs or preparation work been completed?
- What is the measured tire or undercarriage condition, and how does it fit your expected use?
- What exactly does any remaining coverage include, and what are its limits and claim requirements?
- Can you safely test the machine or have a qualified independent inspector assess it?
