It was not openly available when InfoWorld reported on it on March 31, 2010, and that report does not establish whether the product later launched, remains available, or successfully converted apps at scale.
What J2Android was intended to do
J2Android was described as a way to migrate Java ME software—often called MIDlets—to Android. The proposal addressed two different Java environments; it was not a promise that existing MIDlets would run unchanged on Android. The source is Josh Fruhlinger’s March 31, 2010 InfoWorld interview with Myriad Group CTO Benoit Schillings.
Schillings described Java and Android as “beautiful.” In the report, that remark frames the migration as a move between environments, rather than a claim of automatic compatibility.
Why operators and software vendors were interested
The intended customers were large software vendors and mobile operators with rights to substantial legacy app catalogs. They could want an Android storefront stocked with existing titles, while adapting each app individually might be too costly. The interview also identifies cases where catalog owners might not have original source code, making automated migration appealing.

These points explain the business rationale, not proof that J2Android produced compatible apps, that users wanted the migrated titles, or that the approach generated revenue. The report provides no success rate or comparison with manual redevelopment.
What the “1,000 MIDlets in an afternoon” claim means
Schillings was reported as saying the tool could be used for “converting 1,000 MIDlets in an afternoon.” This was an optimistic statement attributed to Myriad’s CTO—not an independently measured result or a published benchmark. The article gives no test conditions, quality measures, or evidence that a batch of that size was successfully converted.

Was J2Android available?
No, not openly at the time of the report. InfoWorld said J2Android was not yet available on the open market and that Myriad was working with a few providers on their back catalogs. That describes its status as reported on March 31, 2010; the source does not establish current availability, support, or commercial results.

The available reporting supports a historical account of Myriad’s proposal, not a present-day recommendation. It does not verify that J2Android can now be obtained, that it can migrate a particular MIDlet, or that migrated apps work correctly on Android. Catalog owners considering any migration would need to establish access to the software and validate each resulting app; the InfoWorld report supplies no technical validation or migration success data.
