-XX:+PrintFlagsInitial prints HotSpot flag values at the initial stage, while -XX:+PrintFlagsFinal prints values after the VM has made its startup choices. To see the flags for a real application, capture that application’s startup output or query its running process with jcmd; the result belongs to that particular JVM build and environment, not to Java universally.
What is the difference between PrintFlagsInitial and PrintFlagsFinal?
Both are HotSpot-specific -XX diagnostic options. Oracle describes -XX options as specific to the HotSpot VM; many are intended for performance tuning and diagnosis. They are not portable guarantees across every Java implementation. See Oracle’s Java launcher documentation.
-XX:+PrintFlagsInitialrequests the initial values of HotSpot flags.-XX:+PrintFlagsFinalrequests the values after VM initialization and startup selection.
Comparing the two can show that a value differs between those observation points. The difference alone does not explain why the VM chose that value, prove that a command-line option changed it, or show that the value is better for an application. The explicit initial-versus-final distinction is described in a 2010 JavaWorld/InfoWorld explanation; exact behavior and displayed output should be verified on the Java release and vendor build you are troubleshooting.
How do I see the flags my application actually uses?
Capture flags during application startup
For an application’s own startup record, Oracle’s troubleshooting guidance recommends adding -XX:PrintFlagsFinal and -showversion to that application’s JVM arguments, restarting it, and reviewing its logs. This records the VM launched by the application, which may not be the same executable or configuration you get from an interactive shell.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the application’s JVM-argument setting or service launch configuration, preserving its existing arguments. The exact place to add them depends on the application or service wrapper. Check the startup log for the Java version and the flag output; if either is missing, confirm the arguments reached the JVM rather than being treated as application arguments. See Oracle’s troubleshooting guidance for command-line options.
Query a running process
Oracle documents jcmd <pid> VM.flags for querying a JVM process. Replace <pid> with the process ID of the Java application. To request all flags supported by that VM, use the command’s optional -all setting: jcmd <pid> VM.flags -all. Consult the local jcmd manual for the accepted syntax and process-permission requirements for your JDK. References: Oracle’s jcmd manual and Oracle’s diagnostic-tools guide.

How should I compare flag output?
Before interpreting a changed value, make sure the outputs describe comparable JVMs and capture points. Record these details with each output:
- JVM identity: vendor, JDK release and build, HotSpot or another implementation, and architecture. A HotSpot option or value should not be assumed to apply to a different JVM.
- Capture stage: initial listing, final startup listing, or a later query of a live process. These represent different points in the VM’s lifecycle.
- Launch context: the exact JVM arguments and, where relevant, operating system, architecture, container limits, and other resource limits. VM ergonomics and environment conditions can affect startup choices.
- Purpose: use the application’s own startup logs to understand what its launch produced; use
jcmdto inspect a process that is already running.
Do not infer a flag’s origin from its displayed value alone. A value may reflect a command-line override, a VM startup choice, or a default; compare the complete output with the exact arguments and environment.

Why a printed flag value is not a tuning recommendation
A listing tells you what a particular HotSpot VM reports, not whether changing a flag will help your workload. Oracle notes that many -XX options are advanced and that some can depend on system-specific conditions. OpenJDK’s JEP 165 also documents that invalid or out-of-range flag values can cause the JVM to terminate. Confirm an option’s meaning and availability for the target Java release, and investigate an observed problem before changing a setting.
Because accepted options, defaults, and output can vary by JDK release, vendor, platform, and implementation, verify spelling and syntax against the target JVM rather than treating a listing from another machine as a universal reference.
