MongoDB Queryable Encryption (QE) encrypts selected fields on the client while allowing queries only on field types and operations configured in advance. To use it with Node.js, first confirm that your server, deployment, driver, and encryption package are compatible; then choose which fields need encryption and which must remain queryable; finally, create a new QE collection with that schema and implement either automatic or explicit encryption. QE is not an in-place switch for an existing collection, and it does not support every MongoDB query or update operation.

What Queryable Encryption does

QE is MongoDB’s in-use, client-side encryption feature. Selected field values are encrypted by the application’s client before they are stored, and authorized client applications with access to the encryption keys decrypt returned data. A configured query type lets the application search encrypted values for a limited set of supported operations; it does not make arbitrary queries over encrypted fields possible. MongoDB describes examples such as payment-card numbers, addresses, health and financial information, and other personally identifiable information, but those examples do not establish suitability for every workload or compliance requirement. See MongoDB’s Queryable Encryption overview.

Automatic and explicit encryption

Approach How it works What to plan for
Automatic The driver handles encryption and decryption for supported operations without requiring the application to add explicit encrypt/decrypt calls to each operation. Requires a query analysis component and a compatible deployment. Follow the current Node.js driver setup guide for the options and APIs applicable to your versions.
Explicit Your application specifies encryption logic through the driver’s encryption library. Encryption logic must be specified throughout the application wherever it reads or writes the protected fields. Confirm the selected server edition and package compatibility.

MongoDB describes these two workflows in its QE overview. They are implementation choices, not different security promises: in either case, key access and the client environment remain important parts of the security boundary.

Check the compatible stack before coding

MongoDB’s current compatibility documentation specifies MongoDB Server 7.0 or later on a replica set or sharded cluster; standalone deployments are not supported. It lists Atlas and Enterprise Advanced as supporting automatic and explicit QE, while Community Edition supports explicit QE only. The same reference lists Node.js driver 5.5.0 or later and mongodb-client-encryption 2.8.0 or later as minimums; with Node.js driver 6.0 or later, use mongodb-client-encryption 6.0 or later. Automatic encryption also needs a query analysis component. Check the current QE compatibility reference and Node.js driver encryption guide for your chosen versions and deployment before installing or configuring the client.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Query capabilities also depend on the server release. MongoDB’s current Node.js driver documentation requires Server 8.0 or later for range-query support and Server 9.0 or later for prefix, suffix, and substring support. These are minimum server versions for those query capabilities, not substitutes for checking the other compatibility requirements.

Choose encrypted fields and query types from real application needs

Start by listing what the application must ask about each sensitive value: exact-match lookup, a numeric or date range, supported string matching, or no search at all. Then check the value’s actual BSON type and the operators used by the application. QE query types are configured per encrypted field, and MongoDB says enabling queries increases storage requirements and affects query performance. The query type cannot later be changed for an existing encrypted field, so decide before creating the production collection. See MongoDB’s guidance on encrypted fields and enabled queries.

Configuration Field values and query use Important boundaries
Equality Exact-match style operations on supported BSON types. Configuration supports BSON types except arrays, Decimal128, doubles, and objects. Equality queries on Decimal128 and double use the range index instead.
Range Ordered comparisons on UTC dates, Decimal128, doubles, 32-bit integers, and 64-bit integers. Requires MongoDB Server 8.0 or later according to the current Node.js driver documentation.
Prefix, suffix, substring Supported string matching for configured string fields. Requires MongoDB Server 9.0 or later according to the current Node.js driver documentation.
queryType: "none" Encrypts a field without enabling queries on it. Arrays can be encrypted this way, but array members cannot be encrypted individually and encrypted arrays cannot be queried.

The supported BSON types and query type rules are documented in MongoDB’s supported operations reference. It also identifies null, undefined, MinKey, and MaxKey as unsupported encrypted BSON values. Validate the BSON representation your application actually writes; a field name alone does not tell you whether a configuration is valid.

Plan the Node.js implementation

Use this sequence to avoid building a client around an unsupported deployment, schema, or workload. The current Node.js driver encryption guide and MongoDB’s QE quick-start material are the authorities for exact client options, API calls, and key-provider configuration; those details can vary with package versions.

  1. Verify the environment. Record the MongoDB Server version, topology, edition, Node.js driver version, and mongodb-client-encryption version. If you intend to use automatic encryption, confirm the query analysis component is included in the setup.
  2. Map sensitive data to fields. Select only fields that require client-side encryption. For each, decide whether the application needs to query it or whether encryption without query support is sufficient.
  3. Match query configuration to BSON and operators. Choose a supported query type for each field based on real application queries. Check the operator and BSON type against the supported operations reference; do not assume that an operator working on plaintext fields also works on encrypted ones.
  4. Create the QE collection explicitly. Supply the encryption metadata and field configuration at collection creation, following the current Node.js guide. QE is for new collections; implicit collection creation does not build the required indexes and metadata collections and may lead to poor query performance.
  5. Configure keys and client access. Use MongoDB’s key-management instructions for the provider and deployment you selected. Keep key material out of source code and logs, and grant decryption access only to authorized clients.
  6. Exercise the real read and write patterns. Test each intended query, update, and aggregation pattern against MongoDB’s supported-operations reference. Evaluate storage and query-performance effects with your workload, and plan for the smaller set of server diagnostics available for encrypted data.

Know which operations will and will not work

QE stores encrypted field data as BSON BinData. The driver supports a defined subset of commands and operators; unsupported patterns return errors. For equality-configured fields, the documented operators include $eq, $ne, $in, $nin, logical combinations, $expr, and $exists. Range-configured fields also support $lt, $lte, $gt, and $gte. The full rules, including aggregation and command coverage, are in MongoDB’s supported operations reference.

Query patterns to avoid

  • Comparing one encrypted field with another encrypted field is unsupported, although comparing an encrypted field with a plaintext value is supported.
  • Queries that compare an encrypted field with null or use a regular expression on it fail.
  • $text, $where, and $jsonSchema are rejected when using a QE-configured MongoClient, even if the target field is unencrypted.
  • Multi-document update and delete operations are not supported. For findAndModify, arguments are restricted.
  • Among update operators, only $set and $unset are supported on encrypted fields.

Do not infer broad CRUD support from a successful insert or simple lookup. Verify every command, operator, and aggregation stage the application depends on before relying on it.

Design for collection lifecycle constraints

QE cannot be added to or removed from an existing collection, and it does not automatically migrate a plaintext collection or a collection using Client-Side Field Level Encryption (CSFLE). MongoDB’s documented migration route is to reinsert documents one at a time; CSFLE documents must first be decrypted before insertion into the QE collection. Plan for that transformation rather than expecting an in-place enablement. See the QE limitations.

  • Create QE collections explicitly so MongoDB creates the required indexes and metadata collections; do not rely on implicit collection creation.
  • Do not configure _id for encryption; QE does not support encrypting that field.
  • Choose the field’s query type before the collection is in use because it cannot be changed later.

Understand security boundaries and operational trade-offs

MongoDB positions QE as protection against data exfiltration, not as a defense against every adversary. Its stated guarantee does not cover an attacker with persistent access to the environment or one able to obtain both database snapshots and query information. MongoDB’s limitations documentation especially cautions that range-query security is affected when an attacker has query transcripts or logs, even in small quantities. Protect application hosts, keys, logs, and operational access alongside the database; QE does not hide all metadata or make encrypted search unbreakable. See MongoDB’s QE security limitations.

Encrypted fields are redacted in some diagnostic commands, and some operations are omitted from query logs. That reduces the information available for performance investigation and support. MongoDB recommends collecting application metrics with a third-party application performance monitoring tool, so decide how you will observe latency and failures without depending on database query logs alone. Query enablement also brings storage and query-performance costs, but MongoDB’s cited documentation does not provide a universal benchmark; measure the effect on your workload rather than assuming a fixed overhead.

Maintain metadata and monitor the application

QE introduces metadata collections in addition to the application collection. MongoDB’s current limitations documentation says to compact metadata collections when they exceed 1 GB; this is maintenance guidance, not a performance target or query limit. Include the metadata collections in operational planning and consult the limitations documentation for current maintenance details. At the application level, track the query and write patterns that matter to users because encrypted operations may not be fully represented in server query logs.
