It is the clearest match in this shortlist for a standalone journey with companions, an explorable world, and turn-based battles. Choose Bravely Default II if you want deeper control over jobs and turn economy, or Octopath Traveler if you are happy to follow eight separate character stories rather than one conventional party-led narrative.
Which game should you play after Final Fantasy IX?
The best next game depends on what you want to carry forward: a fantasy setting, a band of companions, turn-based combat, character growth, exploration, or a particular emotional tone. These recommendations share some features with FFIX; none is established as a full match for its writing or tone.
| Game | What it shares | What is different | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition | A standalone fantasy RPG with companions, an explorable world, and turn-based battles. | The available publisher information confirms those shared genre features, not an equivalent writing style or tone. | A substantial, party-led fantasy adventure. |
| Bravely Default II | A four-hero fantasy journey, turn-based battles, and character-role progression through customizable jobs. | Its Brave/Default system makes turn economy a central tactical choice. | Players who enjoy shaping party roles and planning when to act. |
| Octopath Traveler | Turn-based battles, exploration, side quests, and multiple character stories. | It follows eight travelers with their own stories, a different structure from a conventional single-lead party narrative. | Players open to multiple routes and HD-2D presentation. |
Dragon Quest XI S: the closest party-led fantasy fit
Dragon Quest XI S is the most direct pick here if the appeal of FFIX for you is setting out on a substantial fantasy journey with companions. Square Enix describes the game as a standalone RPG with a band of companions, an explorable world, and turn-based combat. Those overlaps make it a sensible first choice without implying that its tone or storytelling duplicates FFIX. Square Enix’s announcement dates to 2020 and listed PS4, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time. That historical list is not a guarantee of present availability, regional catalog listings, or physical stock, so check the store for your platform and region.
Bravely Default II: choose it for tactical turn management
Bravely Default II is a four-hero fantasy adventure with customizable jobs. Its defining difference is how it makes you weigh current actions against future turns: Brave Points let a character spend ahead to act multiple times now, while Default banks points and reduces incoming damage. That adds a distinct layer of party planning rather than simply reproducing FFIX’s combat. Nintendo’s product description frames the system as a balance between playing safely and taking risks against varied enemies.

Octopath Traveler: eight stories instead of one shared party arc
Octopath Traveler offers turn-based battles, exploration, side quests, and eight traveler stories. The important caveat is narrative structure: its multiple protagonists and individual routes are not the same shape as a single-lead story centered on a conventional traveling party. It is a good next choice if you like the idea of distinct character journeys and an HD-2D visual style. Square Enix’s June 2024 bundle announcement listed console and PC platforms as of that date; check current local listings rather than treating that announcement as proof of current availability. Nintendo’s Octopath Traveler II listing says the first installment, initially released in 2018, sold over 3 million copies worldwide. The listing does not state the year for that sales total, and the figure refers to the first game, not the franchise overall.

If what you value most is freedom to explore and make choices, rather than a close structural match to FFIX, consider the SaGa franchise. Square Enix describes it in terms of non-linear exploration and player choice, making it an adjacent alternative rather than the nearest fit for a party-led fantasy adventure. Square Enix’s SaGa overview is a starting point; check individual game listings for platform and regional availability.
