Python can power the application code around an AI agent: it can define tools, validate requests, run actions, and manage the loop that passes results back to a model. It does not, by itself, make an agent autonomous, reliable, or production-ready. Google’s Agent Development Kit (ADK) is one current example of a Python toolkit for building agents and working through development, evaluation, deployment, and observability.
What makes an AI agent Python-powered?
An agent is an application built around a model, not simply a model with Python attached. The model interprets a task and can propose a next step, such as calling a tool. The application code determines what tools are available, checks the request, performs permitted work, and decides whether to send a result back to the model or finish the interaction.
A typical interaction follows this loop:
- The application sends the user’s task and relevant context to a model.
- The model responds with an answer or a request to use an available tool.
- Python-side code validates and routes the request, then runs the permitted function or service.
- The application returns the tool result to the model, which can continue or respond to the user.
Python is useful for implementing the application layer and connecting components. The model’s output is not the same as an executed action: the surrounding code controls which actions actually run and what results return to the model.
How do you build an AI agent with Python?
Start with a narrow, testable task rather than an open-ended mandate. The following path is practical guidance based on the development, evaluation, and deployment capabilities described in Google’s ADK documentation; it is not a requirement to use ADK or Google Cloud.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose one task. Define what a successful result looks like and what the agent must not do.
- Choose a model and define its tools. Make the available actions explicit. Keep the model’s role—interpreting and proposing—distinct from the application’s role in deciding what runs.
- Validate and limit actions. Check tool inputs in application code, allow only necessary operations, and apply sensible limits before an action can change data or affect an external system.
- Evaluate representative cases. Test routine requests, ambiguous inputs, invalid tool requests, and cases where the agent should stop or ask for human help. ADK’s official materials include evaluation guidance.
- Plan deployment and operations. Decide where the agent will run, how you will inspect traces or logs, and where human review is appropriate. ADK materials cover deployment and observability-related practices; the Agents CLI documentation describes building, evaluating, and deploying ADK agents on Google Cloud.
What does Google ADK provide?
Google’s Agent Development Kit is a documented example of a Python toolkit for agent development. Its materials cover coding support and project scaffolding, evaluation, deployment, and observability-related practices. Google also documents an Agents CLI for building, evaluating, and deploying ADK agents on Google Cloud. These are examples of available capabilities, not evidence that ADK is the only or best choice for every project.
Google’s documented Freeplay integration for ADK is another example: it covers observability, prompt management, offline and online evaluations, and human review. Whether those capabilities or products are appropriate depends on a team’s needs; they are not prerequisites for every agent.

Tool calls and generated code are different
A normal tool call asks application code to run a defined function or service. Executing code generated by a model is a different and more consequential operation: it lets the model supply code that will be run. An agent does not need code execution to use tools.
Google documents an ADK code execution tool that runs in a sandboxed Agent Runtime environment. That is a specific ADK option, not a general guarantee about agent security or a property shared by every framework. Decide whether code execution is necessary at all; if it is, assess the tool’s documented isolation and operational limits rather than assuming that “sandboxed” removes all risk.

How should you choose an agent toolkit?
ADK is one example, not a basis for ranking it against LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, or other alternatives. To compare toolkits for a real project, examine the capabilities and operating requirements that matter to your use case:
- Which model providers and options are supported?
- How are tools defined, validated, and orchestrated?
- How is state handled across steps or sessions?
- What execution isolation is available, especially for generated code?
- What evaluation facilities help test agent behavior?
- How can you inspect traces, logs, and failures?
- Where can the agent be deployed, and what infrastructure or operational work does that require?
The Google materials cited here describe ADK and associated tools; they do not establish comparative results for other frameworks. Verify each candidate’s current documentation and fit against your requirements before choosing.

Which Python version should you use?
Python 3.14.0 was released on October 7, 2025, and the Python.org release page now says it has been superseded by Python 3.14.8. The Python 3.14 series includes official free-threaded support, deferred annotation evaluation, template string literals, multiple interpreters in the standard library, and a standard-library Zstandard module. Those series features do not establish that a particular agent framework or dependency supports every 3.14 release.
Before selecting a runtime, check the current Python patch release and the compatibility information for your agent toolkit and its dependencies. A newer language release is useful only if the packages your application needs support it.
