Generative UI is AI that creates or assembles an interface for a task instead of answering only in a fixed chat layout. Ask to book a table for two, for example, and the system could present a date picker and available time slots together. It is a promising interaction pattern—not a universal replacement for conventional apps or chat—and its quality, speed, and safety depend on how it is built.
What generative UI changes
A conventional chatbot presents text in a predefined conversation interface. A generative UI system can choose or compose a task-specific presentation: an interactive explainer, a form, a simulation, a tool, or even a game. The interface becomes part of the AI response, rather than merely the container around it.
Google Research describes generating custom pages, games, tools, and applications in response to prompts. The W3C Generative UI Community Group frames the broader idea as synthesizing interfaces at runtime around a person’s intent, context, and needs. Those descriptions point to an emerging design approach, not a settled definition or a guarantee that every prompt can produce a useful interface. Google Research’s overview and the W3C group page explain their respective work.
How a generative interface is made
A useful way to think about the process is that the application supplies context and tools, the model plans a presentation suited to the request, and a host—such as a browser or app—renders the result. The implementation can then validate or post-process the output to catch known problems.

- Provide task context and capabilities. The application may give the model relevant information and tools, such as web search or image generation.
- Plan a presentation. System instructions can guide the model on what to build and how to use available capabilities.
- Compose or generate the interface. Depending on the design, the model selects approved components, sends a structured description, or creates code.
- Validate and render. The host can apply checks or post-processing before displaying the result. Google Research describes an implementation that can produce HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for a browser.
For a restaurant booking, a chat-only flow might ask for a date and then a time in separate turns. A task-specific interface could show the date picker and available times together. That example comes from the A2UI project announcement; it illustrates the approach, but is not an independent usability test.
Three ways to control what the model builds
Generative UI systems can give the model different degrees of freedom. This comparison synthesizes the approaches described by Google Research and A2UI; it is a practical framework, not a universal industry taxonomy.
| Approach | What the model supplies | Main benefit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed component catalog | A choice and arrangement from approved components | The application retains stronger control of branding and rendering | The interface is limited to the available components |
| Declarative UI description | A structured description that the client maps to its own components | Hosts can retain control of styling and rendering across different clients | Teams need a shared component vocabulary and reliable mapping |
| Open-ended generated code | HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or another executable interface | Offers broad expressive freedom | Raises additional security, correctness, styling, and testing concerns |
Why the host-controlled route matters
A2UI, announced by Google on December 15, 2025, uses messages to carry a declarative UI structure and data. The client maps that description to its own approved components, retaining control of rendering and styling. Google says the project is designed for updateable agent-generated UI and describes renderers for Lit, Angular, and Flutter, with further integrations intended. Its announcement describes an evolving project, not a completed cross-vendor standard. Read the A2UI announcement.

What preference results say—and what they do not
Google Research reports that its generated interfaces ranked ahead of raw text and standard markdown in its evaluation, while expert-crafted pages ranked highest. The project page describes a preference evaluation that randomly sampled 100 prompts from LMArena and sent each result to two raters for pairwise preferences. It reports a score of 1736.2 ELO and says generated results were at least comparable to human expert-created results in 50% of cases. These are results reported by the project, not a general prediction for every model, product, prompt, or user. Google Research’s project page provides the evaluation details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe comparison did not account for generation speed. Google’s blog says its implementation can sometimes take a minute or more and can occasionally produce inaccuracies. A preferred interface in a comparison is therefore not automatically the best choice for a time-sensitive task, and these results do not establish that generated pages outperform carefully designed interfaces overall.
The project page’s bibliographic information is date-sensitive: it gives a 2025 attribution while also listing arXiv:2604.09577. The evaluation details above are attributed to the project page without inferring a definitive publication date from that discrepancy.

Risks and design decisions to address
Latency and task value
If an interface takes a minute or more to appear, the task needs to be valuable enough to justify the wait—or the product needs a strategy such as progressive updates. A2UI describes incremental updates as a design capability, but that does not by itself establish how quickly a particular implementation will respond.
Accuracy and fallback behavior
A generated control can look plausible while presenting incorrect information or offering the wrong action. Google Research acknowledges occasional inaccuracies. Products need validation appropriate to the task and a fallback—such as a conventional form or a clear request for more information—when the generated result is incomplete or unreliable.

Security and trust boundaries
Executing arbitrary model-generated code creates security concerns. A declarative format mapped to approved client components can reduce exposure by keeping rendering under host control, but it does not make every implementation secure by default. The host still needs to enforce its own permissions, data-handling rules, and component constraints.

Accessibility and portability
A generated interface is not automatically accessible because it is interactive. Teams still need to consider keyboard use, assistive technologies, understandable labels, and consistent behavior. Portability also takes deliberate work: a structured description must map predictably onto each host’s component set and conventions.
Evaluation and testing
W3C’s Generative UI Community Group is exploring performance and evaluation, validation and testing, intermediate representations, accessibility, and alignment with Web platform principles. Its page says the group may publish specifications; it does not establish that a finalized cross-vendor standard already exists. See the group’s scope and activity.

Google’s blog has described its work appearing in Gemini as “dynamic view” and in Google Search AI Mode. The rollout details in that account are time-sensitive: it described Dynamic View and Visual Layout as experiments and AI Mode generative UI availability for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States at that time. Check the current product information before relying on availability; those historical descriptions should not be read as a statement of today’s access. Google’s post describes the experiments and its implementation.
Developer projects
OpenUI’s generative UI toolkit documents a toolkit for agents that return live, interactive interfaces using an application’s components and design system. A2UI is another project to examine when a host-controlled declarative interface format is relevant. These projects represent different approaches and are evolving; their documentation should be checked for current capabilities and integrations.
