Spring Web Flow can manage a multi-request business workflow alongside JSF by defining its screens, transitions, and completion point as a flow. For the current Spring Web Flow 4.0.1 line, the documented baseline is Java 17 or later, Spring Framework 7.0, Servlet 6.1, and JSF 4.1 or later for the JSF integration. Before adopting it, check that your application’s framework and servlet runtime meet that baseline.

When Spring Web Flow is a good fit for JSF

Use Web Flow when a business task has a clear beginning and end, requires users to move through a controlled sequence of screens, and should keep changes provisional until a final step. It is designed for a stateful conversation spanning multiple HTTP requests. Spring lists checkout, loan applications, flight check-in, and adding a confirmation step to a form as examples of suitable tasks.

Ordinary JSF navigation may be enough for screens that are largely independent. Consider Web Flow when the task’s progression and completion rules are important parts of the application rather than incidental page navigation. Before choosing it, assess these factors:

  • Workflow shape: Is there a defined start, ordered sequence, and endpoint?
  • Commit point: Should the application defer final changes until the user completes the workflow?
  • Repeat protection: Would completing the same transaction twice cause a problem?
  • Runtime compatibility: Does the application meet the intended Web Flow version’s Java, Spring, Servlet, and JSF requirements?
  • State and navigation: How much flow state should be retained, and should users be able to move backward within an unfinished flow?
  • Routing and migration: Can the relevant requests be handled by Spring’s DispatcherServlet, and will the application need to support both Spring and Faces routing during migration?

Web Flow’s project page describes POST/REDIRECT/GET behavior and protection against returning to completed flow sessions with the browser Back button. Treat those as design goals to validate against the actual flow and repository configuration, especially where custom navigation or completion logic is involved.

What a flow contains

A flow is a declarative model of a user’s business conversation. In the reference guide’s XML model, four elements define its basic structure:

  • flow contains the flow definition.
  • view-state renders a screen.
  • transition responds to an event and moves the flow to another state.
  • end-state marks completion.

The first state defined in the flow is its starting state. A typical business task can therefore be represented as a start screen, one or more transitions between screens, and an end state that represents completion. The flow can carry state across requests and can be reused for appropriate tasks.

Check version compatibility before configuring JSF

The current Spring Web Flow Reference Guide identifies release 4.0.1 and states that Web Flow 4.0 requires Java 17 or higher, Spring Framework 7.0, and Servlet 6.1. Its JSF integration chapter requires JSF 4.1 or higher. These are requirements for the documented current line, not a recommendation to upgrade every legacy application directly to those versions.

Check the Java runtime, Spring Framework version, servlet container, and Faces implementation actually used by the target application. The guide says Web Flow artifacts are available from Maven Central and shows the org.springframework.webflow:spring-webflow dependency pattern; choose a version consistent with the guide and the application’s dependency management.

How to configure Spring Web Flow for JSF

Web Flow uses Spring MVC as its web platform. In the documented JSF arrangement, Spring’s DispatcherServlet handles Web Flow requests, while FacesServlet is configured in web.xml so the JSF implementation initializes. JSF requests generally do not need to pass through FacesServlet at runtime when JSF is used with Web Flow.

The guide provides XML and Java configuration patterns. In either style, the key pieces are:

  1. Configure a flow executor. It executes flow definitions.
  2. Register flow definitions. A flow registry locates and registers them. The XML example searches under /WEB-INF for files matching **/*-flow.xml.
  3. Set up Faces flow-builder services. These configure Web Flow’s rendering integration for JSF.
  4. Register the Faces lifecycle listener. Add FlowFacesContextLifecycleListener to the executor so a single FacesContext is maintained for a Web Flow request.

For Facelets, the guide shows XHTML templates and the jakarta.faces.DEFAULT_SUFFIX setting. These are reference patterns; adapt them to the application’s deployment and configuration style rather than assuming the example is a drop-in configuration.

Route requests through Spring during integration or migration

Requests for Web Flow are handled by Spring’s DispatcherServlet. The guide notes that requests traditionally mapped to FacesServlet may need to be mapped to Spring’s dispatcher instead. For a page-by-page migration of a legacy application, mapping both servlets can support a period in which some pages use the old routing arrangement and others use Web Flow. Decide which servlet handles each request and verify the mappings in the deployed application.

Manage execution state and browser Back behavior

The flow executor is the central execution service. Its execution repository retains flow executions and snapshots, and the guide allows these retained items to be limited. Its example sets a per-session execution cap and a snapshot cap for each execution; the execution limit applies across flow definitions within one user session.

Snapshots support browser Back navigation. If snapshotting is disabled, the browser may return an execution key for a snapshot that was never recorded, so back navigation will not work as expected. Choose repository limits with both user experience and retained state in mind, and test browser navigation through unfinished and completed flows in the application.

Make the adoption decision against the task

Spring Web Flow is a fit when the application needs an explicit, stateful sequence for a business task—not simply because the UI uses JSF. Confirm the runtime baseline, configure Spring MVC and the JSF integration together, and set repository behavior deliberately. For historical context, Spring’s August 10, 2022 announcement of Spring Web Flow 3.0 M1 discusses migration work for Spring Framework 6 and Jakarta EE; the current 4.0.1 reference guide is the relevant source for current compatibility requirements.
