A preferred-stock call date is the first date an issuer may redeem a series under its optional-redemption terms. It is not a promise that the company will redeem the shares that day, and it is not the stock’s maturity date. The prospectus supplement for the exact series controls whether the issuer can call, what it must pay, which dividends are included, and how much notice it must give.
What a preferred-stock call date means
When preferred stock is callable, the issuer has a contractual right to redeem some or all of the shares under specified terms. The first optional redemption date marks when that right ordinarily becomes available. It does not itself announce or trigger a redemption.
Read the exact wording: some documents permit redemption “on or after” a stated date, while others restrict redemption to specified dates or circumstances. A call date is distinct from maturity, and a date alone does not establish that the issuer has exercised its right.
The terms can also provide for mandatory redemption, a holder’s redemption right after a defined event, or special early-redemption rights tied to particular events or regulatory requirements. These provisions are issue-specific, not universal rules. For example, one 2006 SEC-filed prospectus describes optional, holder-elected, and mandatory redemption as possibilities when specified in the applicable supplement, and provides for partial redemptions. See the filed prospectus.

How redemption payment is determined
The redemption amount comes from the series’ governing documents, not from the price an investor paid in the market. A stated formula may use the liquidation preference and may add specified dividends; the terms determine which dividends count and the relevant record and payment dates.
- Liquidation preference: Find the amount specified for the series and whether the redemption formula uses all or part of it.
- Dividends: Check whether declared, accrued, unpaid, or other specified dividends are included. Do not assume undeclared dividends are payable.
- Timing: Note the redemption date and the document’s rules for dividend accrual, record dates, and payment.
A 2021 Series A supplement, for example, describes redemption at liquidation preference plus specified unpaid dividends, while also setting out event-based and regulatory exceptions. Those terms apply to that series only; they should not be used to infer another preferred stock’s payment. Read the Series A supplement.

Dividend treatment varies. A 2026 Prudential prospectus explains that the applicable supplement specifies whether dividends are cumulative or noncumulative. That distinction matters when determining whether omitted dividends can accrue, but the series documents must still be checked for the actual redemption calculation. See the Prudential prospectus.
What happens to dividends and other rights
A redemption can end future dividend income on the redeemed shares. The governing terms specify when accrual stops and what must happen for that cutoff to take effect. One SEC-filed prospectus, for example, describes dividend accrual ending after redemption subject to its stated payment condition; that clause is an example, not a general rule. Review that prospectus provision.

Whether any unpaid amount is payable depends on the series’ dividend terms and redemption formula. A holder should distinguish cumulative from noncumulative dividends and declared amounts from undeclared amounts rather than assuming that every missed or accrued dividend is included.
Notice, partial calls, and early-redemption exceptions
The prospectus supplement sets out how and when the issuer must give notice, whether the issuer can redeem only part of the series, and how shares are selected for a partial call. It may also restrict redemption to particular dates or require approvals. Check the detailed redemption clause rather than relying on a headline call date.

A 2021 Series G supplement illustrates how provisions can differ: it states an ordinary no-call period ending June 28, 2026, a $25 redemption price plus a specified dividend amount, a special redemption provision for defined events, and notice requirements. These are historical terms for that specific issue, not a general preferred-stock formula or confirmation of its current status. Read the Series G supplement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a call can affect an investor’s return
If a company redeems shares, the investor may lose the expected future dividends and need to reinvest the proceeds. Investor.gov explains this general reinvestment risk for callable bonds: an investor whose security is called may have to reinvest at a lower, less attractive return. Preferred-stock outcomes likewise depend on the purchase price and the specific redemption and dividend terms; bond guidance does not determine a preferred series’ contract. Compare the market price with the stated redemption amount and consider your own cost basis and expected income. A redemption amount is not necessarily the market price or the investor’s break-even price.
How to check the terms for a specific preferred stock
- Identify the exact security. Record the issuer, series designation, and security identifier. Confirm whether your holding or quote represents a full preferred share or a depositary share; a prospectus may specify the fractional interest represented by each depositary share.
- Find the filings. Search the issuer’s investor-relations materials or SEC EDGAR for the prospectus supplement, amendments, and later redemption notices. Investor.gov describes EDGAR as a source of free public access to company filings. Learn about EDGAR.
- Locate the relevant clauses. Search the filings for “Optional Redemption,” “Mandatory Redemption,” and “Special Optional Redemption,” as well as any holder redemption or conversion provisions. Record who controls each right, its earliest date, permitted dates, and any event or regulatory exceptions.
- Write down the economics and procedure. Note the redemption-price formula, dividend treatment, notice window, partial-call rules, and the point at which accrual stops. Compare the terms with the market price and your cost basis.
- Check for an actual announcement. Look for a recent issuer notice or filing. The first call date alone does not show that notice has been given or that redemption has occurred; the status of an individual issue can change.
How to compare two callable preferred issues
Use each series’ own filings. A compact comparison helps reveal differences that a shared issuer name or similar dividend rate can obscure:
