First make sure you are trying to join an online session, then check the selected hero, sign-ins, game versions and console subscription requirements. Check that you are joining an online cross-play session
The Minecraft Dungeons II FAQ lists couch co-op, online play through cross-play, and mixed co-op, where local players can team up with additional players online. It lists Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Minecraft’s official FAQ confirms cross-play generally, but does not publish a matrix verifying every platform pairing.
Make sure the host has started an online session and that the other player is using an online join or invite option. Couch co-op is local play; a remote friend needs to join through online play. Xbox Wire describes local multiplayer, online play with friends, matchmaking and combinations of these modes, with up to four players online or in couch co-op. Xbox Wire’s overview does not establish a specific repair for connection failures.
Try an online hero if the current hero cannot join
A launch-week guide from Dungeons2DB summarizes player reports that offline and online heroes are separate, and that an offline hero may not join an online session. If the game offers an online option when creating a hero, try creating a separate online hero and joining with it. This is a player-reported lead, not a confirmed rule in Minecraft’s FAQ, and it is not guaranteed to work. Keep your existing hero; do not delete or overwrite it as a troubleshooting step. Check account sign-in and game versions
The same third-party guide recommends confirming that each player is signed in to a Microsoft account and checking that everyone is using the same game version. These are sensible checks, but they are not presented as an official Mojang troubleshooting procedure.
- Each player should confirm they are signed in to the intended Microsoft account and any required platform account.
- Compare the game version shown on each player’s system. If versions differ, check for and install available game updates, then try the invite again.
Check console online multiplayer requirements
Minecraft’s FAQ says online console multiplayer and co-op require a platform-specific online subscription, sold separately. Console players should check the current requirement and subscription status for their platform. The FAQ does not say that PC players need a console subscription. Minecraft Dungeons II FAQ

If cross-play still does not work
The official FAQ confirms the feature but does not provide a troubleshooting matrix or guarantee a fix for particular errors. Before contacting Minecraft Support, note these details for each player:
- Platform and the platform pairing involved.
- Whether the selected hero is an online hero.
- Game version.
- Microsoft and platform-account sign-in status.
- Whether a console online-multiplayer subscription is required and active.
- The exact error message, or what happens when the invite is sent or accepted.
Give support the exact behavior rather than assuming a particular cause. User posts in the Minecraft Feedback index mention online-character and support issues, but those reports do not establish a widespread defect or an official diagnosis. Minecraft Feedback community index
