Yes, FreeMarker can replace JSP as the view layer in some Java web applications, but it is not a drop-in JSP implementation. Apache FreeMarker is a Java template engine: application code supplies data, and FreeMarker combines that model with templates written in its own language, FreeMarker Template Language (FTL), to generate text. It can render web pages, but it can also produce email, configuration files, and source code. The official FAQ’s comparison is titled “JSP versus FreeMarker?” and contrasts FreeMarker with JSP 2.0 plus JSTL—not every current Jakarta Pages configuration.

What FreeMarker does—and what “alternative to JSP” means

Apache FreeMarker is a Java library for merging templates and a data model into text output. In an MVC application, that makes it a possible view technology: the controller or application prepares the data, and an FTL template formats it for the response. FreeMarker is not inherently a web or servlet technology; generating HTML is one use among several. The project describes FreeMarker as free software under the Apache License, Version 2.0. Apache FreeMarker project overview

JSP, by contrast, is designed around Java web containers and servlet-based page rendering. So FreeMarker is an alternative when you want to use FTL templates for views, not an implementation that runs existing JSP files unchanged. The official FAQ frames its comparison as FreeMarker versus JSP 2.0 with JSTL; treat that as a useful conceptual comparison, not a complete evaluation of every modern JSP or Jakarta Pages setup. Apache FreeMarker FAQ

How FreeMarker and JSP differ

Decision area FreeMarker JSP
Core role General-purpose Java template engine that combines FTL and application data into text output. Servlet-oriented page technology; the FAQ comparison discusses JSP 2.0 with JSTL.
Where it can generate output HTML and other text, including email, configuration files, and source code. Primarily a Java web-page/view technology.
Template language FTL, with its own interpolation and directive syntax. JSP syntax and, in the FAQ comparison, JSTL tags.
Use as a web view Can render FTL files in a Model 2 servlet application, with integration and configuration. Runs in the servlet/JSP environment for which the application is configured.
Migration path Can coexist with JSP resources in supported integrations, including access to JSP tag libraries in documented configurations. Existing JSPs can remain while views are migrated incrementally.

The practical distinction is scope and coupling, not a blanket claim that one is faster or better. If the application only needs servlet-rendered pages and the team already knows JSP, retaining JSP may be simpler. If you want the same template engine for web views and non-web text output, or prefer FTL’s authoring model, FreeMarker may fit better.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What an FTL view looks like

FTL has its own constructs for interpolation, conditionals, and iteration. For example, an FTL view might contain:

<#if user??>
  <h1>Welcome, ${user.name}</h1>
</#if>
<ul>
  <#list products as product>
    <li>${product.name}</li>
  </#list>
</ul>

In a JSP/JSTL-oriented view, equivalent logic is expressed with JSP Expression Language and tag-library constructs. Existing JSP pages therefore need to be rewritten or deliberately integrated; changing a filename or view resolver alone does not translate JSP syntax into FTL. The right choice also depends on who authors templates and which syntax the team can maintain confidently.

Can FreeMarker replace JSP in a servlet application?

Yes, in a Model 2 architecture, where controllers handle requests and views render the resulting model, FTL files can serve in place of JSP view files. However, servlet containers do not automatically treat FTL files as JSPs. The web application or framework must configure FreeMarker rendering and route the relevant view requests to it. FreeMarker servlet integration guide

  1. Choose the integration point. Determine whether your framework has its own FreeMarker integration or whether you will use FreeMarker’s servlet support.
  2. Configure template loading and rendering. Set up how templates are found and how the application’s model is made available to FTL views; the exact configuration depends on the framework and deployment.
  3. Convert views to FTL. Rewrite JSP markup, expressions, and JSTL logic using FTL and any supported integrations your application needs.
  4. Test within the actual container. Confirm the selected FreeMarker servlet/JSP API variant matches the container’s namespace and version, and verify view resolution and response rendering.

There is no one-line swap that preserves all JSP behavior. Framework integration varies, so confirm the details in the documentation for the framework and FreeMarker release you actually use.

Keeping JSP resources and tag libraries during a transition

A migration need not always replace every JSP at once. FreeMarker’s servlet guide documents ways for FTL templates to access JSP tag libraries and, in supported servlet configurations, include JSP resources. This can allow old and new views to coexist while teams migrate incrementally. It is not universal: the guide’s servlet-provided directives depend on using the relevant FreeMarker servlet support, and a framework’s own integration may expose different capabilities. Check Java and servlet namespace compatibility

Compatibility depends on the FreeMarker release and the servlet container’s API namespace. FreeMarker 2.3.33, released June 1, 2024, added Jakarta servlet/JSP variants while retaining the legacy javax packages. Its release notes state minimum Java 8, and minimum Servlet 3.0 and JSP 2.2 for users of servlet/JSP support. These are requirements documented for 2.3.33; do not assume they describe every FreeMarker release or every container configuration. FreeMarker 2.3.33 release notes

What changed in FreeMarker 2.3.35

The official manual currently targets FreeMarker 2.3.35, released August 27, 2026. Its release notes list hexadecimal literals and multiline text built-ins for dedenting, indenting, wrapping, and splitting lines. They also describe GraalVM native-image support, which requires explicit reflection and resource configuration; that support is not evidence of a performance advantage. Security depends on who can edit templates

FreeMarker 2.3.35’s release notes describe additional template-loader path checks and improvements to the default member-access policy. They also warn that FreeMarker cannot provide proper security when template authors are untrusted. Treat template editing as a trust boundary: do not assume that a template engine safely sandboxes hostile authors. Review the official security guidance against your deployment’s actual data access and authoring model. FreeMarker 2.3.35 release notes FreeMarker security FAQ

How to decide

  • Choose FreeMarker for views if you want FTL templates in a servlet MVC application and are prepared to configure the integration and migrate page syntax.
  • Consider FreeMarker beyond views if using one Java template engine for HTML and other text outputs is valuable to your application.
  • Keep JSP if existing pages and tag-library workflows meet your needs and migration would add maintenance or compatibility work without a clear benefit.
  • Verify before committing if your application depends on JSP tag libraries, mixed JSP/FTL rendering, or a particular Java and servlet namespace combination.
